That's correct.  They will not be perfectly secure like the NES games are, but they do fit very well.  The manuals fit perfectly as you can see in the picture.

As far as I know, the designer still plans to make unique SNES cases, but from experience, I can tell you that the design, prototype, testing, and initial production phases take some time (as would be expected), so it might be some time before we have SNES cases.  However, the quality is very good.  Definately a step agove UGC (which has noticably become lower quality over the past few years).

I have been through the whole process twice now. I was around when shadowfox was getting dimensions on the gb/gba ds cases. Must have been like a year or two ago. Can't wait for these cases to arrive so I can tuck all my rare manuals away.

That's cool.  Then you know what I mean.  It takes a while, but it's worth the wait when you finally get them.

Funny thing is that I just used my last Shadowfox GB case last night, which means I need to put in another order if I ever plan to buy another GB game again.

  • Sigh. I really wish someone would design a case with the a SNES game's dustcover in mind (or a Game Boy game's clamshell). The whole point of me wanting to put my games in cases is to keep everything that came with it in a single, durable container.

Having me remove those and store them in a plastic bin somewhere is no better than me currently having to store the manuals in a plastic bin somewhere, except I'd be out a lot more money and have a lot less free space.

Maybe someone else will produce a case that can in another 20 years.

I think the problem is that if the case is designed to hold the dust cover in place, the game would be loose without the dust cover.  I think case designers are banking on the fact that the majority of collectors don't have those dust covers, because most people didn't hold on to those things anyway.  However, I understand your frustration.  I always kept that stuff for the games I bought new as a kid.  Unfortunately, I didn't buy many games as a kid because of the price.  Most of my collection has been purchased second hand and those games rarely have their original dust covers.

But keep in mind that you could always use a UGC.  The downside is that since those cases are designed to hold multiple different sized carts, they will never hold anything securely.  The upside is that if you have dust covers, you can store them in the cases.  I'm still using UGCs for my SNES games and the small number of SNES games that still have their original dust covers fit in those cases perfectly.  You could use them for NES if you wanted to (like I used to), but they must be modified for NES carts to fit.  But if modified correctly, the NES games can be stored with their original dust covers.  Something to think about.
  • UGCs are terrible for everything and can't hold manuals.

I had to learn that the hard way after I bought a shipment from mediashelving a couple years back.

They hold manuals, just not securly.  I agree that they are not a great option, but for many systems, they are the only option.   I use UGCs for SNES, N64, Genesis, 32x, 2600, 5200, Jaguar, ColecoVision, Odyssey2 and Fairchild Channel F.  The only non-portable cart based systems I have that aren't in UGCs are NES (customgamecases) and Master System (original Sega cases).

  • SNES, N64, and Jaguar manuals were too tall to fit in the ones I had, unless I wanted to bend them.

That's interesting.  I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of that if you have them.  I can assure you that SNES and Jaguar manuals fit in mine.  I don't think I have any N64 manuals to test, but I though they were the same size as SNES.  I can tell you with 100% certainty that not all UGCs are built equaly.  Members of The Cover Project have had many discussions on the changes that have happened over the years.  For example, if you print a cover out that was desinged a few years ago, it will be about 1 mm too wide to fit in a current batch of UGCs.  That's easily fixed, but it goes to show that design changes have happend.

With that said, the few SNES manuals that I own fit in the UGC along with the cart.  Of couse there are no manual clips, so it is loose, but it is usually pretty tight between the case and cart, so the manual doesn't really move around much.  However, since Jaguar carts are thicker than SNES, most of the thicker manuals will not allow the UGC to close all of the way.  Because of that, I have two UGCs that hold nothing but Jaguar manuals.  Each UGC will hold about 7 or 8 manuals depending on the thickness, but it hold them perfectly without any bending.  Some of the tabs in the UGC had to be removed for this to work.

So like you said, UGS are FAR from perfect, but until something better comes along, they work for me.

  • I sold them all off months ago.

Too bad I didn't get any of the ones that apparently weren't shitty.
  • ^^^^ Very nice. I love that idea. I might end up doing somethign similar.

The manuals will bend if you try to fit them in the UGCs I've used. Not a good place to keep expensive manuals.

  • Shit, maybe I'm getting mixed up on some of my manuals and cases. I don't have any of my stuff in front of me right now, but I could have sworn my SNES manuals weren't bent like that. I apologize if I confused anyone on that. However, I know that my Jaguar manuals fit as long as you remove some of the interior tabs. I was just looking at those a few nights ago. I can take a picture of those tonight. They actually fit pretty snug with the interior tabs removed.

Interesting. How many manuals do each binder hold on average?

  • How securely do they hold manuals? Do they slip out easily?

I had a binder for my manuals when I had a lot of them. It holds them securely as long as you don't turn the binder upside down
  • Not to get off topic (I'm definitely interested in hearing these solutions, as I have a lot of loose manuals), but to play devil's advocate for UGCs, I'd just mention their price. If manual+cart storage isn't a huge desire, it seems that UGC prices are too low to ignore (relatively). I've been wanting some custom game cases for a while (mainly for GB/GBA), but the price has dissuaded me from taking the step.
  • I bought a case of 100 UGC almost ten years ago for $99... and I'm still not out yet.
  • I remember on another forum this topic came up and someone linked some Martha Stewart recipe binder-thingy to hold manuals. A simple Amazon search yielded this (which looks like it'd be great for NES-sized manuals?)

  • Not quite a year old.

Anyway, my plan is to use at least one game case per row on the shelf to hold all the manuals for that row. This way they are accessible but do not sustain wear and tear from accessing the cartridge.
