NES Top loader in the UK

Comments

  • The power adapter would not be the only problem. Unless it's an AV modded console, you won't be able to play it on a PAL TV.

I have a Top Loader, but just for collection purposes. The AV Famicom is the way to go if you want a Nintendo top loading console that works with PAL TVs.
  • Hi!

I have ntsc consoles (super Nintendo and Megadrive) which work fine on both of my tvs, so I don't see it being a problem
  • Check your TV first. A lot of TVs (esp. those sold in Europe) feature NTSC and PAL compatibility. It might be worth reading your manual to check. If you research online, this is why you'll find various answers to this question. Some people say it works, some people say it works but it's a little glitchy or the timing is off, some people say it doesn't work at all. What they're really telling you is their TV's region compatibility.
  • Hi! I'm from Europe. You are right when you say that your NTSC SNES and Megadrive work on PAL TVs. I assume that you're connecting those consoles via SCART. Most modern PAL TVs will take an NTSC input through the SCART socket.

That is not true for the RF input, which you would have to use if you got a non-AV modded top loader NES, as that is its only output. I have a Super Famicom, which is NTSCJ (US NTSC should produce the same results), and while I normally connect it through RGB SCART, I have tried the RF output of the console as well. On an early 2000's CRT TV no signal was picked up. On a 2011 HDTV a signal was picked up, but it was pretty bad and had no sound.

If you want to import NTSC consoles that output RF only in Europe, you have three real choices:

    1. Import a US TV (expensive shipping costs).

    2. Import a US VCR, connect your console to that and connect the VCR to your TV through composite (the best method if you want to buy many NTSC RF-only consoles).

    3. Get your console AV modded, or buy one that is already AV-modded (do this if you don't think that you'll buy too many NTSC RF-only consoles).
