Anybody Else Want A REIMAGINED Super Mario 2D Game?

So, Super Mario Maker kind of got me thinking.

Pretend we never went from the SNES to the N64.

If this was the chronological list to go by.....

Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros 2

Super Mario Bros 3

Super Mario World

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

What would a reimagined 2D world look like after that, as kind of a throwback game that could be released now for Wii U persay.

New Mario pixel style that's never been done

New levels

New power ups

  • This hypothetical third Mario game for SNES would likely have used pre-rendered CGI like DKC and Super Mario RPG.
  • Wasn't Super Mario 64 originally planed to be a SNES game? It probably would have played like that somehow but in 2D.

I think OP meant to keep it on the SNES hardware

Edit: nevermind. You've answered perfectly, teh lurv

No, Super Mario 64 was always an N64 game (or Nintendo Ultra 64 or Project Reality).

"Super Mario FX" has been proven to be just another name for the SuperFX 3D accelerator chip, not a game. Early versions of the SupeFX say "MARIO CHIP 1" on the top of the chip.
  • No, trying to cut back. Thanks anyway.
  • teh lurv nailed it. classic 2D gameplay with new levels and powerups, that is pretty much the NEW Super Mario Bros series to a T.

Only thing missing is a "pixel art style that has never been done before" whatever that means. Nintendo was already moving away from the pixel art style by the end of the SNES era with DKC, Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario RPG, pulling a Mega Man 9 would have been seen as a step back.

And with Mario Maker you can actually make your own old school Mario levels so there is little reason for the big N to retread old ground.

    Here's the thing though.....

While this is a fantastic game I don't think of it in the classic 2D Mario style. It's reinvention, as in the LATEST and GREATEST Super Mario for the next gen gamer world.

What I'm talking about is a one off throwback. Not necessarily just SNES graphics style, but the next logical step after Super Mario World in 2D.

Many of you guys have made great points about the pre rendered graphics phase that came later in the SNES releases. I just think it would be something fun to play.

It wouldn't have to be looked at as a step back. Just a treat for us retro guys for a Super Mario game that could've been. I will shut up now because I may be the only one who wants this type of throwback with a different spin (without being NEW GEN! game).

  • Also, here's my other gripe that always bothered me. Yoshi's Island was a fantastic game, but I always yearned for a true Super Mario World sequel on the SNES. I should've let that gripe go in the 90's but It's still something I'd love to see done. I also apologize If I am doing a poor job describing the game I wish for to be made.

P.S. I would buy that game.

It sounds to me like you have given this quite a bit of thought. Why not make one yourself? Or have someone who can do that sort of thing make it? I am dead serious, by the way. There is nothing more exciting and fulfilling than finding ways to immerse oneself deeper into a particular hobby or passion.

  • I would've liked to see a Super Mario World Sequel with a little bit of a "darker" tone, with bosses like Antasma from Mario & Luigi Dream Team, for example. In fact that gives me an idea. I'd like to see a Super Mario World game set in a dream world, but to have a bad/bizarre dream tone and aesthetic to it, with creepier Mario-esque music. Super Mario 2 for NES had a little bit of the aesthetic going on that I'm talking about, with the flying Phanto faces, masked Shy Guys etc. Just have the entire game in that sort of setting.

Go pick up a copy of the 'Return to Dinosaur Land' rom hack... Its great, and I'd say it makes a great sequel to SMW.

Hmm.... Tim Burton/Miamoto team up?? Interesting...

David Lynch/Miamoto would be the shiznit, as the kids say these days.

I was going to say this but I think the look is not what the guy is going for. But I do agree with you.

Ya, it doesn't have the 'gothic' kind of look he's wanting, but its story is slightly darker, and its a bit tougher than SMW - though not so much that its unplayable by any means lol.

  • I've only played it for a few minutes but isn't Paper Mario 2D?
  • You guys need to look into the vast world of Super Mario World rom hacks. All the fans of that game over the years have pretty much made more then a handful of great hacks using that engine to make what I'd consider "worthy" sequels of the original.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read the post.

"Ummm... didn't they already do that with New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. WiiU, Super Luigi U for Wii...?"

I think Nintendo got away from the 2D platformer for Mario because of the available technology of the 64 & Gamecube. I'm sure they also thought doing things different with advancing technologies would help sales.

All of us who have always loved the SMB series for NES & SNES have wanted a 2D platformer since those early days you speak of. It took them a while but Nintendo smartened up and released a new game... so appropriately named New Super Mario Bros.

It took a while for the company to realize that the classic 2D style of game was still relevant but I think they brought it back pretty successfully. I'm still waiting for the WiiU to come down in price/crash to buy one to play New Super Mario Bros 2 and Luigi U.

I thought the New SMB games were terrible, in terms of graphic design.

Some of the levels were fun, but I thought they were too easy overall.

But that "2.5D" graphic style is disgusting, IMO.

Hmmm... I thought the one for Wii was okay, the game controls were pretty lacking and loose.

I didn't have a problem with the graphics though.

Part of the reason I'm stoked for the WiiU is the HD though, so I was kind of looking forward to the New Super Mario/Luigi Bros. on there. Maybe it just doesn't work with the 2D, though.

I just find that graphic style gross to look at (from the first time I saw it on the DS).

Especially having seen how many alternative 2D art styles they've done that actually look good (Super Paper Mario, or Wario Land Shake It)

Hmmm... yeah, I see what you're saying.

I liked the graphic style of Paper Mario. The actual game is terrible, but the graphic style was cool.

I'd have to disagree with you, there.

    I enjoyed the whole series.

Granted, I only played the first one recently, so it really just felt like a low-res Alpha version of Paper Mario 2.

I don't have any of the complaints about Super Paper Mario that others seem to have, though.

  • I don't mind the way NSMB looks, but when they use it for every game, it gets tired. Super Mario games should represent an advance in technology every time, IMO. The same graphics for NSMB/Wii/2/U says all they're doing is making level packs now. They've also cheaped/lazed out on music, with the same songs for every world.

Well yes, we will surely have to agree to disagree on that one. Especially for being a Mario game, I thought the gameplay was so slow and tedious it was brutal to play. My gf and I had the game in for about 5 minutes and we were like "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck this".

Along with Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario is one of the slowest and most tedious Mario games. Reading... in a video game?? No thanks.

We played Paper Mario and the 1000 year door on Wii first it it was okay. Borderline annoying, and we gave up on it due to lack of interest. We figured we would try out the original. Sweet lord... There should be minimal reading in video games. Far, far too much reading in Paper Mario. So boring.

They're a series of stripped down RPGs... what did you expect?

Well, I didn't know what to expect. I had no experience with the games before I played them and didn't know they were RPG's. Being a Mario game I figured it would be a 2D platformer with a "paper" graphical style.

Like I said, we got through a bit of the one for Wii because of the fancy 3D gimmicks and it was kind of interesting. So when we put in the one for 64 it was brutal.
