Earthbound vs Metal Warriors

I might have an outside shot at a straight up trade but was wondering if my extra Earthbound isn't just a tad bit better and deeper than Metal Warriors. What do yall think?

  • If you're purely going on value I think that Metal Warriors holds its own better than Earthbound. Like what has been previously mentioned on here many times before, Earthbound is a great example of a cart that is fairly common but has a ridiculous markup despite how accessible it is. Metal Warriors, on the other hand, is a genuinely more obscure (at least in comparison to something like Earthbound) cart and should continue to hold its value provided that the market continues its current trend(s).

So long story short, my vote is for Metal Warriors.
  • Value wise I'd probably agree with Stryphos, but if you're talking gameplay, it depends on your tastes. If you would get more replay value out of an action platformer than an average (SNES) length RPG (or vice-versa) then there is your answer.
  • Well if by "extra Earthbound" you mean duplicate, than yeah, I would definitely trade off 1 of them for Metal Warriors
  • Yes, but more games are trying to emulate Earthbound and its themes, like Undertale, than have ever tried to emulate Metal Warriors. There also isn't an entire site dedicated to Metal Warriors.

Metal Warriors, while good, has other offerings on the console that are similar to it (Cybernator, Front Mission Gun Hazard) that fans might purchase instead to get their fix, whereas up until recently Earthbound was the only iteration of that franchise that made it here.

From a collectability standpoint, Metal Warriors, if yours is in good condition or you can get one in good condition. But if you end up getting one in bad condition, Earthbound is going to be better, because the fervor for the game won't die down any time soon. Also, despite everyone saying the game is "ridiculously common," it only sold around 140k copies in the USA. Mega Man X, on the other hand, sold 570k copies, and Chrono Trigger sold 280k. The only reason you see it so often is because of its value.

Also, saying it's overhyped and saying that the hype will go away is like saying the hype for Chrono Trigger or FF 3/6 will go away. It won't, and those games are ridiculously overpriced, too. And besides, the really nice examples of the games that tend to get label wear are the ones that go for the premiums. The prices vary wildly based on that alone.

TL;DR: Earthbound if you can't get a nice condition Metal Warriors cart.
  • Metal Warriors seems to be a bit harder to come across than Earthbound. You can find random copies of Earthbound on trade forums and Ebay any day of the week. A good MW is a bit tougher to find.

Side note; I had not realized how much MW price has bumped up!
  • Metal Warriors
  • Purely from a collectibility standpoint I'd trade my *only* Earthbound right now for a good copy of Metal Warriors, no thought required. I imagine that Earthbound might go up a bit more near the holidays, but its rises and falls in the last two years or so is ridiculous and kind of scary.

That being said, I don't like the Earthbound. Nope. Not one bit.
  • Jesus I can't believe the price Earthbound has jumped as well.........if you have an extra copy get that Metal Warriors!

MW = worth more, genuinely rare/uncommon, fun game.  Seems like a no brainer

  • This seems like a no brainer.

Metal warriors is worth more and earthbound is a duplicate for you. I think earthbound is even more common.

    Go for it dude.
  • Metal Warriors might just be the most valuable LucasArts game now.
  • Metal Warriors will be worth WAY more than Earthbound long term. Whether or not it's a better game is debatable.
  • The deal I'm trying to work out is my Earthbound and Suikoden 1 for his Metal Warriors and Wild Arms 2. I have an extra Secret of Mana, Mario RPG, Lufia 1 & Mystic Quest to sweeten the pot if I need to but I'm hoping that with EB on the rise it will even out with the original deal. This guy isn't into NES much at all so he doesn't have any of that to trade but if he can bring himself to part with MW then I'll take it.
  • You're currently getting the better end of the deal right now. EB + Suikoden 1 = Metal Warriors in price at the moment, if MW has a decent label. If the MW label is intact and not faded, worn, or anything like that, I'd toss in some of those others to make sure you get it.
  • Id rather have metal warriors all day.

    Gameplay wise or Value Wise
  • As others have said, Earthbound is a fairly common game and is always available. Search Metal Warriors Snes on ebay and you will find 6 listings. Search earthbound snes and you get 83 results. Everyday on NA, multiple people are actively selling EB (loose at least).

If you have an extra copy of EB, then why hoard it?

This. Metal Warriors is a great game. I wish I'd known the price was going to hit the moon because I'd rented it a few times back in the day and really liked it.

For sentimental value Earthbound is better though. :-)
