Does anyone have a sentimental attachment to a game that's generally regarded as awful?

Top Gun ranks near the top of my list. Its not that good but back in '87 the movie had been out for a few months and it was riding that gravy train. Actually several games in that era weren't very good but I'm sure theres an attachment for several of you

  • I don't think it's regarded as "awful" so to speak but I loved and still do Little League Baseball: Championship Series for the NES. Not the best sports game around but I remember buying it with my own money from Kay-Bee Toy Stores back in 1990 I believe and that was a big deal!

Also "enjoyed" playing Bigfoot on the NES.  This was largely because my Uncle had gotten the game and because he got it then it must've been an awesome title.  Fast forward 25 years ... not so much.
  • I loved Astyanax on the NES as a kid. At one point, I could beat the game without getting hit.

I've tried replaying it as an adult and it's every bit as bad as people say... but deep down I want it to be as good as I remember
  • I rented X-Men at least a dozen times back in the day...it was a common rental when I had friends over. Sucked ass solo, but we all enjoyed it on two players.

I also prefer Play Action Football over Tecmo Bowl, likely because I had actually played it back in the day. I'm honestly surprised it doesn't get any love at all...it's a solid game, although I do understand why most people don't prefer it...fewer teams, takes forever to finish a game, etc. But to not get love at all, it's surprising to me.

I don't think astyanax is that bad! I mean for how cheap it is I can find some enjoyment in it, it's certainly not broken or anything

    I enjoyed Fester's Quest.

It's like playing only the dungeons/lairs in Blaster Master.

Same "gradius-syndrome" problem, as well...stay powered up or just throw in the towel.

  • First time playing video games was at my uncles house, he had a SNES with Mario world, Mario kart, smash TV and spiderman and Xmen arcades revenge. All great games except for spiderman and Xmen which is ridiculously hard. If it had infinite continues it wouldn't be bad, it controls well. But after a few deaths its back to the beginning. Not a good game but still a favourite I'll pop in from time to time
  • I've beaten The Incredible Crash Dummies games many, many times.
  • A friend of mine tried to stay away from all things mainstream. I remember while I was playing Metroid, Kid Icarus, Zelda, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy he was playing 8 Eyes, Astyanax, Ultima, Dr. Chaos, Maniac Mansion, Kid Niki, Karnov, Ring King, Three Stooges. None of which are terrible games but to him they're his favorites as a kid so that makes them just a little bit more special. Ii guess what I'm trying to say is that when it comes to what's "good" its all subjective
  • 10 Yard fight. I actually used to rent that game a lot and thought it was awesome. Not really sure why I liked it so much since I've never really been a big fan of football.
  • SMB2 apparently. According to the worst ever sequels thread.

Nooooo. To me SMB 2, Zelda 2 & Castlevania 2 are a trilogy because they were all in the Sears catalog back in '88.    3 of the best the NES has to offer

  • I still love Home Alone for SNES. My favorite part is when the crooks walk on tacks and say "bleh!" while falling off the screen

  • My cousin and I were really into the Batman movies when we were kids, so this game was a big deal for us when it came out lol. It actually was a fun game, even if it had problems. I still play it once in awhile.

  • Godzilla on Nes. As a kid I bought legacy of the wizard (or lesbian of the wizard according to auto correct), and didn't like it. I've been a falcom fanboy 20+ years, still not thrilled with it. Returned legacy, bought Godzilla, and I still think it was a good move
  • Friday the 13th for the NES takes the cake for me. I didn't even know it was generally regarded as a shitty game until I joined this site lol.
  • I can't force myself to give up Hoops for the NES, despite how bad it is. Most of the other games we bought were at least decent, and I could get rid of Jordan vs. Bird, but Hoops is just playable enough, and just memory-inducing enough, for me to not have the heart to put it on the chopping block.

Same for me with Batman Forever lol... It was a pretty good game until I got here lol. Though maybe paying $4 for it should have clued me in on that lol.

  • Lagoon. I've beaten it twice.
  • Altered Beast is one of my guilty pleasure games.

Is that considered to be a bad game? I liked it.
  • Golgo 13. There's so many interesting things about it that there's enough motivation to keep playing, but really it's not pretty, the music and sound effects are hit or miss, and the gameplay is sometimes confusing and awkward. But but but...did I/Duke just get videogame-laid? AWWWW YEEEAAAHH!
  • Home Alone on the NES. The music is also very nostalgic for me. I was pretty little when I got that game. To this day I think it's a fun game with a very unique concept: Stay alive for 20 real time minutes.

I think people get hung up on the controls on this game, like hitting the sweet spot on the stairs to go up and down
  • For whatever reason, I really enjoyed 2Xtreme for the PS1. It was one of the first games I bought for it. Years later I remember reading about how poorly rated the game was. I was surprised since I enjoyed it so much.
  • For me it was uncanny x-men and ultima exodus. I got x-men because I judged it by the box and comic series. Despite the horrible gameplay I stuck with it and it grew on me. Exodus is not a horrible game but it hardly compares to the quality RPGs on the NES. I was able to borrow the hint book as a kid so I really got into it. Quest of an avatar was a blessing after my exodus experience.

You aren't alone Ozzy I think Godzilla is an awesome game.

  • The Karate Kid for NES

I had it back then as a kid, it was very hard for me.

Bought it again a year a go when started collecting, when I test it out just to see if it worked I almost beat it in less than 10mins in only one try after 25 years.

I couldn't believe it was just an intro-fight and 3 levels.

  • Ultraman and Power Moves are games with huge sentimental value for me that's generally regarded as awful. They're not exactly "fun" games to play today, but I keep them around because:

    1. They wouldn't sell for much anyway that it's not worth the shipping hassle

    2. They carry a lot of nostalgic value for various reasons

So I just hang onto them, lol. Besides, you never know when the odd nostalgic urge to relive these below average (to say the very least) titles might kick in.

Friday the 13th will always be my #1 "bad/good" NES game, lol.

I remember I freaked out when I found out there was a Friday the 13th game on the NES (I had no idea it existed until the FuncoLand flyer told me!) back in like late '97. I bitched and moaned until my parents brought me to FuncoLand, and I spent my whole $4.99 on the cart.

I still have and play that very same cart to this day!
