Does anyone have a sentimental attachment to a game that's generally regarded as awful?

  • For me it's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Does it fail compared to the sequels? Yes. But I always had fun being able to swap characters to achieve goals (like the cheap staff trick Donatello does during the Rocksteady boss fight). And I still play from time to time... up until I beat the dam and realize the labyrinth of levels that I am unable to beat.
  • Star Voyager (NES). My uncle, the Star Trek fan, gave it to me for xmas. It's completely impossible without an exceedingly rare stroke of luck. I found the laser upgrade exactly once. I don't even know if I ever found the alien mothership. Never found the bomb or whatever you need to actually win. I found a guy on one of the planets but he didn't do anything, as far as I could tell. All this in dozens, maybe hundreds of hours I put into that "game".

oh man, i loved that game growing up. my cousin and I both had it on the genesis, so we would swap codes whenever we beat a level.

  • Not really sentimental about Friday the 13th, but I love that game

    The Karate Kid for NES

I had it back then as a kid, it was very hard for me.

Bought it again a year a go when started collecting, when I test it out just to see if it worked I almost beat it in less than 10mins in only one try after 25 years.

I couldn't believe it was just an intro-fight and 3 levels.

I second this one, love Karate Kid! To me it feels like a spiritual successor to Spartan X/Kung Fu.

I actually prefer the Famicom version just because of the extra stages/transformations.

I actually prefer it over the sequels.  The only reason the later two get any play at all for me is because of the two-player mode, otherwise I'll take the first game any day of the week.
  • For me, Solar Jetman. I didn't realize that most people aren't into this game until I began collecting games. At least, that's what I've seen. I had it as a kid and I LOVED it. I still do. A close second would be Dynowarz. It's amazing how buying games has changed. I'm sure I simply looked at the artwork and the still-frames on the back and thought "AWESOME"!. 8)

Solar Jetman is a good game but the difficulty ramps up waaaaay too fast. I can see people getting frustrated as early as the beginning of the second stage. For me, I couldn't even scratch the surface of the third. I still pop it in to play every so often.

Dynowarz isn't even awful, I don't think. It's just super super average. Like there's nothing I really hate about it but there's nothing amazing. On the plus side it is pretty easy.

I always liked Solar Jetman and it was one of the first games I reacquired when I got back into the NES. I loved the physics of how your ship moves around the stages, I thought the graphics were good and I loved how your little astronaut would pop out and float around.

The game is really challenging, though. I need to give it another serious run sometime soon. I imagine defeating that game would feel pretty good.
  • hylide, the first game I got with my own money.
  • I have a sentimental attachment to quite a few games that many consider bad:

    Tiger Heli

    Bart vs the Space Mutants

    Turtles I

    Trog

    Highspeed

F-15 Strike Eagle (I remember seeing the opening scene where a F-15 flies by and I thought: 'Woah, just like the real thing!' lol)
  • Another one I thought of was Jurasic Park for the SNES. It got a lot of hate since you couldn't save (basically needed to play through 3 to 4 hours in one sitting) and the ending was pretty poor. However, I still got countless hours of enjoyment out of this game. It's one of the games I would love to play again and the only thing keeping me from doing it is the fact that I never have enough time to play it through all at once. I used to have the entire island pretty much memorized. However, I would definately need a guide to get through it today.

Oh yeah! This was one I owned in my youth. I used to play it constantly. It had some really nice graphics, I loved the interior Doom-style stages, and I thought the puzzle-like nature of it was a lot of fun. It almost reminded me of Legend of Zelda in more than a few ways. It's one that I'd love to own and play again. Other than the lack of save/password feature, I have no idea why this game gets slammed by some folks.

I much prefer it to the version we got on Genesis, which I was never really able to get into.
  • I've only been collecting since 2002 (my mom never got me a Nintendo when I was little). I kinda have a soft spot for the unlicensed titles. I would often pick up anything in an odd looking shell. Bible Adventures, Quattro Adventure, Mermaids of Atlantis, Bee-52, heck even Wally Bear and the No Gang can be fun if gameplay is a little weird at times. I guess all those days of picking up those odd colored carts at EB Games that just sat for weeks paid off...

Color Dreams actually did manage to stumble into a half-decent game with Crystal Mines too. I got my copy when a nearby rental place was selling off its NES stock a decade and a half ago, and remember being surprised that it wasn't complete garbage like Robodemons or Raid 2020. Actually I will give Robodemons props for the synthesized voice at the beginning, which is kinda nifty.

I agree with this 100% got so much $#!7 on it, and so underated.

I know hey? It was such an awesome game until I found out it was bad 20 years later lol. In reality, its only the manual that sucks cuz it doesn't really tell you how to play properly, and as much as some people didn't like it, I thought the combat controls being based off the Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter 2 controls was actually kinda brilliant, because it opens up the possibilities of fighting to so much more than just 'Punch/Kick/Item' like most other games like it, like Battletoads/DD, or Batman Returns. I think thats what put most people off with the game, the controls were really unusual for a game of its type, but for people accustomed to Mortal Kombat, it didn't take long to figure out and actually was alot of fun, especially when you had someone to play as Player 2. I still love this game.

And just a bit of trivia for people who aren't Batman movie nerds like me... alot of people will notice that the plot progression of the game doesn't follow the plot of the movie. Originally, it actually did follow it pretty accurately. The way its laid out in the game is originally how the movie was filmed and supposed to be released, but there were some massive scene rearrangements at the 11th hour that ended up having huge chunks of the movie either swapped into a different place or scrapped entirely for various reasons. Those deleted scenes (and there are quite a few), like Two-Face's Arkham breakout which was supposed to be the opener for the movie (and is the first level of the game), can be seen on the DVD released a couple of years ago. There's been talk and rumours for years now of a 'Batman Forever' directors cut, which would put the deleted scenes back into the movie, and put the existing scenes back in their original order so that it followed the shooting script, but I haven't heard anything on that in awhile though. It would be really interesting though, as it would completely change the story of the movie and actually have it make sense lol.

I still have my original copy from childhood... although mine was on the genesis... I remember getting really far as a kid and just recently played it again. I think its pretty good once you get used to the controls. And how cool are the graphics? looks like you are playing a movie. Maybe the genesis controls are better? I've never played the SNES version...

I just got this game a few months ago... I agree not awful, but awfully average. I like it and played it here and there since I picked it up at a flea market.

I never played the Genesis version, but I loved the graphics. I always wondered if they were done in the same way that DKC was done? The controls were pretty nice once you got used to it, or once it clicked in your head that you had to play it just like MK lol. Once I figured that out as a kid, playing the game was a breeze, though it was still pretty tough.
  • Bart vs the World. I am a huge Simpsons fan but I will be the first to say that game was just trash.
