snes RPGs... only ntsc...

i am looking for a list of snes rpgs, not SFC or PAL though, just NTSC games. does anyone have a list of all of them? i dont know a whole lot about the snes, but it is my favorite system to play, i am an rpg lover, and i am trying to gather up all of the rpgs for the system.

i looked at lists online, but they are all pretty crappy, and i can look at lists of all the games for the snes, but the problem is that i dont know which ones are rpgs and which ones arent.

can any rpg geeks / collectors help out a fellow geek / collector? image

  • It's easy, just buy a complete SNES set and check out which ones are RPGs image.
  • haha, that does qualify as a correct answer, but not the one i was looking for
  • I don't think I've seen a complete list by genre.
  • hmmm, well then if i cant get a complete list, how about the 30-40 best rpgs for the system? i know the quantity is a lot, but im tryin to get a large list of them. how about i update the first post with rpgs once you guys list them? lets see how many we can get! image
  • Lufia I and II spring to mind, don't know if you count Zelda style stuff, if you do there's LttP (naturally) also Weaponlord and Brainlord.

Shadowrun is another, and Might and Magic III:Isles of Terra is a personal favorite of mine.

  • A number of these have already been mentioned but here's one of the lists I use when I'm looking for SNES RPG games:

    7th Saga

    Arcana

    Breath of Fire 1

    Breath of Fire 2

    Chrono Trigger

    Dragon View

    Drakkhen

    Dungeon Master

    Earthbound

Lufia & the Fortress of Doom)

Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals

    E.V.O. Search for Eden

    Eye of the Beholder

    Final Fantasy 2

    Final Fantasy 3

    Final Fantasy Mystic Quest

Illusion of Gaia (Soul Blazer 2) (Illusion of Time)

    Lagoon

    Lord of The Rings

Might & Magic 3: Isles of Terra

    Paladin's Quest

Secret of the Stars---This game is horrible!

    Shadowrun

    Soul Blazer

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

    Ultima 6: The False Prophet

    Ultima 7: The Black Gate

    Ultima: Runes of Virtue

    Uncharted Waters

    Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons

Wizardry 5: Heart of the Maelstrom

    Brain Lord

    Brandish

King Arthur & The Knights of Justice

    Ogre Battle

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang

    Ys III: Wanderers from Ys.

  • tall guy, are all of the games you mentioned zelda-style games?

i am more looking for true rpgs. maybe there arent even that many... i have no idea!

i know brainlord and robotrek are made by enix... are they rpgs?
  • Super Mario RPG

    Final Fantasy 2

    Final Fantasy 3

    Arcana

    Eye of the Beholder

if you count Zelda-style stuff include:

    Secret of Mana

    Secret of Evermore

    Illusions of Gaia

    Equinox
  • Brainlord is more of a puzzle/adventure game.

    Robotrek is a straight-out RPG.

    Robotrek is a straight-out RPG.

Its always tough to put a label on stuff like Brainlord. You're probably right though about it being a puzzle/adventure game it always kind of struck me as RPG like though in may respects.

  • okay guys, i just threw everything on the list and alphabetized it. so i guess the list will include zelda-style games too. let me know if you disagree with anything and i will remove it.

so would brainlord be removed? what about arcana, brandish, dragon view, drakkhen, dungeon master, equinox, lagoon, twisted tales of spike mcfang, weaponlord?

the others at least sound like they can be rpgs! haha, i dont know anything about those above.
  • Spike McFang is definately iffy but IMO I'd leave it on there.
  • well don't forget the best RPG of all time... Earthbound.

    edit: beaten to the punch.
  • damn, i think i still need 23 of these! haha... i better get to work! image im sure there are some more hidden ones out there. any more additions from the masses?

yeah, really if your list only had Earthbound on it, you really wouldnt need anything else on that list to keep you happy image

    Nope, just Brainlord and Weaponlord.
  • Arcana plays kind of like Might and Magic, but is thematically based around cards and tarot.

Equinox is the SNES sequel to Solstice.  It's sort of a puzzle/adventure game as well.  There is some fighting, but it's mostly exploring and finding keys or solving puzzle rooms.

Also, if you're interested in the gameplay (as opposed to the straight-out collecting) you should consider getting translations of Dragon Quest 5 and 6, as well as Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3).
  • you guys dont think harvest moon qualifies as a rpg
  • I don't think Harvest Moon was on the SNES, was it? I thought that was N64.

Harvest Moon was on the SNES as well. I'd say put it on the list as its not the traditional sword and sorcery thing but you are assuming a role as a farm hand.
  • yes, Harvest Moon ins on SNES. It is common, but always in demand so it is usually $50+. Kinda like the market for Chrono Trigger.

I can't quite remember, but wasn't the SNES game Ardy Lightfoot an RPG?

*** EDIT: Ardy Lightfoot is a platformer.

  • Huh. I guess I completely overlooked that series back in the day. image
  • list updated with harvest moon! anymore that we are forgetting?

  • guys, what about the following games... are these RPGs?

    young merlin
    populous
    rise of the phoenix
    sid meier's civilization
    sim earth
    sim ant
    liberty or death
    aerobiz
    inindo
romance of the three kingdoms II
romance of the three kingdoms III: dragon of destiny
romance of the three kingdoms IV: wall of fire
    aerobiz supersonic
    gemfire
    ghengis khan 2
    nobunaga's ambition
    nobunaga's ambition: lord of darkness
    operation europe
    PTO
    PTO 2
might & magic II: gates to another world

  • Incantation is considered an RPG.
  • incantation added to list... what about the ones on the list 2 posts up? anyone know?
  • Might and Magic II should be.

The Koei games (Romance of the three kingdoms, ect) are historical simulations... not really RPGs in my opinion.

    Definitely correct.

Gemfire is pretty cool as its exactly like the Romance of Three Kingdoms games only with a Fantasy Setting instead of Ancient China.

  • Your master list is missing Obitus (dungeon crawler), Addams Family Values (Zelda Clone), Super Ninja Boy (two player ARPG), Inindo (KOEI made traditional RPG), and Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (why is that missing?).

Might & Magic II also belongs as a dungeon crawler, and I include Young Merlin in my own collection.

Edit: I googled Incantation but it appears to be a generic (although pretty) platformer. What am I missing?
Edit 2: I also googles Weaponlord but it appears to be a Conan styled 2D Fighter. Not sure what gives on that one, but it plays nothing like Brain Lord.
  • i dont really count zeldas and the dungeon crawler games as rpgs. i like more traditional rpgs... this is an old thread! you breathed some life back into it. i will update the first post tomorrow with your additions, even though i have no interest in getting them! image

by the way... final fantasy 1 on the list is mystic quest
