Is Final Fantasy VI really better than Final Fantasy VII?

  • I'm a VII>VI guy but both games are in my top 25 games of all time. I think you can objectively make a great argument for each game. In general though, older fans usually go with VI and newer fans go with VII. Without question, both are TOP TIER RPGs.
  • Well VI has:

    A better soundtrack

    A truly sadistic villain

A non-linear game on the second half

Two lead characters that strongly focuses on, Terra and Celes

A fully customization party, you chose who you want in your party and chose who you want to re-join later on

A difficult battle system that is not easily broken right away

    VII has:

    A better story

    A better combat system
  • I personally enjoy VI more than VII.
  • VII was written from somewhere really special and it reflects in the game and the mood BIG time. Sakaguchi's main focus is on life itself and it came from the loss of his mother.....VII's story has a hell of a lot more depth to VI's. VII uses the same concept obviously as all RPGs to but there is something there with the life force, Mako, Jenova, Sephiroth, Clouds past, all that stuff.....

When you play through that game and all the plot points are starting to make sense and you are unraveling why it is all going on and who Cloud really is etc. that shit cannot be touched...the writing in that game is absolute perfection.....In VI it is clear from the very start what the game is about...there is very little progression in the story from start to finish.
  • I recently started a playthru of 7 a few weeks ago and it still leaves me with unanswered questions...
  • Never played VI.

It probably will even after you beat it there is a lot there.

  • I think so too
  • I enjoy FF7 more than 6 but I can certainly see why a lot of people would prefer FF6. Both are excellent games but I had a better experience with 7 and more nostalgia attached to it.

    Spoilers:

Honestly I thought the scene where Cid dies in FFVI (which can be avoided actually) and Celes tries to commit suicide was way more intense than Aeris getting skewered by Sephiroth.  General Leo's death was also pretty rough.

I think Palom and Porom's fate(FFIV) tugged way harder, accompanied by the saddest music I've ever heard in a FF game. Sure, it was only temporary, but for that moment, I felt gutted. These were little kids for cryin' out loud.
  • it always got 3/6 9( i can't choose between 6 and 9 as the best final fantasy so far) and then 7 for me

    ps i don't like 10

I can't say for certain that I would enjoy 9 as much now, but when it was released it was a great nostalgia trip the evoked memories of the NES game in a really special way, while rinsing the foul taste of 8 out of your mouth.

  • FF6 is not a hidden gem. It is a well-known gem. I couldn't wait for it to come out. I can't find much if anything to complain about it, except that I didn't like the larger character sprites at first. Otherwise, it was amazing from start to finish.

FF7... boy, where do I begin? It was hyped up. I bought a PSX simply because I knew Squaresoft was going to release the next Final Fantasy on that console. Why? Because Squaresoft's previous games - especially the Final Fantasy series - had a reputation for being high quality. I was surprised by FF7, and not in a good way. I hung on to a few memories of this game (mostly bad), but I haven't touched it since 1997 and don't intend to put myself through the agony again.

I have a long list of what I find wrong with FF7, but just to list a few:

    - Graphics were HORRIBLE back then (no anti-aliasing), so of course it hasn't aged well.

    - Summon/spell animations were cool! The first few times. Being unable to skip them became sheer agony. I beat the game with as little grinding as possible and without doing the Chocobo Ranch. During the final battle, the universe was destroyed many, many times, and all I could do was watch.

    - Creating nice scenic environments at the expense of controls is lame. Why confuse me by placing the main character at the far end of the screen (where I can barely even see myself) and make me press down to move toward the foreground when I had just pressed up to leave a building?

    - I was moved by the characters in FF6 and especially FF4. It was easy to sympathize with the characters. I don't remember very many if any characters in FF7 being particularly interesting.

Aerith was annoying. In Phantasy Star II, you actually lose a character who was strong and you could rely on. It was a sudden, painfully gut-wrenching part of the story as well as a punch in the face knowing that your party would have to go on without her.

I had the complete opposite reaction to the loss in FF7 - I welcomed it.

    - Soundtrack of FF7 pales in comparison to FF6 and FF4. There are a few good tracks, but overall doesn't even come close. One-winged Angel sucks, btw.
