Wow, I had to go look up release dates, but I didn't realize Dungeon Master was the first by such a long-shot.

A big part of what steered me away from that genre back in the day (Eye of the Beholder and Menzoberranzan, specifically) was that my dad had some shitty integrated trackball in our keyboard rather than a real mouse (not that a ball-based mouse is ideal for that sort of game anyway )

I haven't played it in 20 years but I remeber it being pretty good.  This is the first time I've ever heard someone say it sucks, let alone "worst on the system".

People like to praise Earthbound for being "such a unique setting", but Shadowrun takes that crown, IMO.

Would I have been happier if they'd implemented turn-based tactical combat instead of realtime?  Absolutely.

But it's a truly unique gaming experience on the system that does an really great mashup of RPG and point-and-click adventure game with lots of plot-points and puzzles to solve/acquire.

See, I don't like that point and click RPG mash-up. I don't think it fits. Not the worst, but pretty bad in my opinion.

    Doesn't fit what?

I wouldn't proclaim it to be the best control scheme on the console, or anything, but as an RPG and an overall games experience, I thought the game was WAY more interesting than most of the vanilla JRPG offerings from the era.

In light of how interesting and unique the rest of the game was, I'll give the challenging control scheme a pass.

Ok, there are much worst JRPG's out there (*cough Unlimited Saga *cough) but, I personally don't like it. You may think otherwise, but that is my opinion, and I respect yours.

What you expect from someone named JRPG specilalist, who's sig is an animated chrono trigger bit (Which is aginst the forum rules) , and their first topic is calling FF8 a hidden gem.

Honestly, "WORST" snes RPG is kinda bad thing to pic, since there's not that many.  If you're not counting zeldaish action RPGs, you have about 22ish.  I'd say the ultima's or obitus would be the ones I dislike the most, and I hate to say they're bad games.  But the perspective on the ultimas make me sea-sick to the point they're unplayable.

Ok.. Maybe FF8 is not a hidden gem, but I just don't like the point and click aspect of Shadowrun. Ok, maybe not worst on the system, and way better than Unlimited Saga, but still in my opinion, doesn't give me that feel normal JRPG games give me.

Because it's not a JRPG, let alone a "normal" JRPG.

It's a console RPG adaptation of a western pen-and-paper RPG system. (albeit done by an Australian developer)

There is nothing in its pedigree that should evoke the trappings of a JRPG.

If anything it might be the closest a console has seen to a cyber-punk iteration of something like Quest for Glory (i.e. a point-and-click adventure game with RPG combat and character stats)

Odd, second time I saw Quest for glory mentioned today.

At our farm I worked with a guy who would not shut up about this game. He was an amiga guy and always called it so you want to be a hero

Well "so you want to be a hero" is the first installment.

Quest for Glory is the series.

Well in his version it wasn't even quest for glory yet:

So for years that got me confused on wtf he was talking about.

And people think SNES had a bunch of RPGs. HA
  • True. Never knew anybody with an Amiga, though.

Yeah. I decided to download "Wayne's World" and give it a try because AVGN said that he couldn't even figure out the first level. I tried my best and made it to the third act of the first level before giving up.

It's certainly challenging but for all the wrong reasons... confusing level design combined with bad controls and cheap enemies.

I've never played "Dr. Franken" but that also looks horrible.

  • I played through all of Wayne's World this year. It's a bad game, but much better than most of the licensed Ocean stuff IMO
  • Is it just me or are nearly ALL games based on movies & TV shows awful? I really want to think that Dennis the Menace and Home Alone and games like that have redeeming qualities but can't seem to find them personally or find any reviews that say so.

Also, here's a weird question. Has anyone found a game in the wild that you don't normally find and think that it might be good? This happened for me with Mighty Max. Never found it before and it was one of those "dime-a-dozen" colorful SNES platformers, how could it go wrong, right? Well.....

Capcom were wizards at good movie/TV adaptations:

Little Nemo -- AWESOME GAME -- based on an animated movie that is based on an old comic strip

    Ducktales 1 & 2 -- again AWESOME games

Willow -- not what I originally envisioned as an adaptation of the movie (having played the INCREDIBLE arcade game) but it's still a great game

LucasArts definitely had their moments, too.
