PS2's achilles heel

One thing that came to my attention regarding PS2's supposed variety is its poor selection of life simulations that weren't shovelware.

Sure, you had some Harvest Moon/Natsume games and the Sims but even those were better on other systems.

PS2 lost out to the more innovative stuff like Animal Crossing which gives most of it offerings a run for its money. Sure, it may be surpassed ulimately by its successors, but for the time it was damn addicting. PS2, having less horsepower and longer load times was not suited to the genre. Although it was certainly far better than Xbox, which actually had the superior port of The Sims but not much else to brag about. Fable comes close though.

Some people would claim GTA and Bully as being in this category, but they're more like action games with sim elements.

Nonetheless, most life sims were suited to the PC. Animal Crossing was just exceptional for the era.

  • I honestly don't think the life-sim "boom" had happened yet during the PS2's life cycle. It was sort of a niche genre at the time that hadn't really broken through to mainstream gaming yet, with the exception of maybe the Sims (which the entire genre owes a lot to). But even then I don't think anyone was lining up anywhere to buy a new system because the Sims was on it. Nowadays games like Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing are system sellers, but back then it was all about Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Ratchet & Clank, Grand Theft Auto, God of War, Metal Gear Solid, etc. Which now that I think of it, really don't make me think of a system with much of an achille's heel. The game lineup was pretty stellar for the time. Every system has genres of games that are strong suits for the system and genres that are lacking. Some systems are great for racing games and sports sims, others are great for RPGs and fighting games. It's what makes us choose the systems we choose.
  • Well, the title of the thread is certainly hyperbolic, I admit.

But you're right. Although I did not say that the Achilles Heel description refers so much to the general offerings of the PS2 as it does to this category specifically. But I think stuff like Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, Wonderful Life (the GC original is superior to the PS2 version) and Animal Crossing give the GC more footing in this category than PS2. It also had the second best port of The Sims, which itself was actually retooled for the console market.
  • Persona. All about dem social links man.
  • I really don't know what this thread is getting at. Are you saying that the lack of life simulation games hindered the best selling console of all time? I mean, maybe these games are better on other systems, but it's not like it brought the system down or affected sales at all.
  • Eh, even if we agree that it's true, that's the best possible genre to miss out on. The PS2 well covered all of the genres that mattered.
  • Uh, I guess if you're REALLY into Animal Crossing you might think that way, sure. Personally I'd play any Harvest Moon title or Innocent Life or Shepherd's Crossing or Rune Factory before I'd ever play something like Viva Pinata, Sims, or Animal Crossing, but that's just me.
  • Also, speaking of the PS2, I got my first neon sign hung up this week.
  • What life sims are on other consoles? I mean aside from Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing, I really can't think of any other "life sims" until the 3DS with Fantasy Life and A Story of Seasons and such. Of course there's the Sims and other Sim____ games on PC but I can't really think of many life sims at all, so I wouldn't say it's only PS2's achilles heel.
  • Thankfully, it's literally the last genre I care about.
  • Ps2 missed out on animal crossing?

Well that makes since since animal crossing is a nintendo property.
  • Lol the title to the thread is hilarious

Considering the lifespan of the system hehe

Metropolismania Is a title to checkout and I don't think GC had operation genesis which is a good sim game too.

Missing out on one franchise that's not a console mover ( during the time ) would be a no biggie
  • I prefer Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland to A Wonderful Life... which was actually ported to the PS2 anyway. Also you had Chulip.

I've played Viva Pinata before and it's pretty good, but I can't stomach Sims or Animal Crossing. Viva Pinata is like managing a really tiny ecosystem, which is kinda neat, and it's one of the lightest "sim" games you can buy outside of what I imagine the Nintendogz/catz/petz/bleh franchise is like.

Still, I wouldn't consider not having Animal Crossing as a detriment to the PS2's library. It's still got the best library of games for any console or handheld ever made.

  • The best life sim on PS2 is The Adventures of Darwin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Honestly, the character customization in GTA San Andreas is good enough for me to count it as a sim. You can even customize vehicles. One of the best games on any system at the time
  • Wasn't Dog's Life sort of a sim-type game?
  • Yeah I know right? No wonder it flopped so bad.
  • ...but what about the PS2 Playboy Sim game? *hubba hubba lol

Nah, Dog's Life is sort of a mission-based 3D platformer. It's actually a really good game IMO.
  • PS2 had that Playboy Mansion game that I think was based on The Sims lol.
  • I'm not into sim games, but even with other games I didn't really find a lot on the system I really liked when you consider its massive library. I love the Jak and Daxter, ratchet and clank, and god of war games. I dig all the classic collections too, but outside of those games I was pretty let down by it. It had just as much shovel ware as the wii, but for some reason gets a free pass.
  • The reason it's the Achilles Heel is because informed people played more Animal Crossing than other genres in that era. It was the Persona of life sims. It got awards for harboring creativity and having a positive impact on its players that wasn't seen even with games like the Sims. There's a massive Animal Crossing fanclub on the West Coast, US where I live and in it we have a 37-year old woman and its all she plays. There's even a meetup group locally that deals in AC merchandise and goods for the community. It's not the same as stuff like The Sims, because they don't have a strong local WiFi community like AC does. Most of the Sims community is online and not a local thing. There were probably more players on AC when it was first localized on GC than Final Fantasy XI which flopped. I don't even recall EverQuest on PS2 having that kind of backing. Again, the game encourages real-life social and creative concepts which enhances the local communities that exist for it.
