Your favorite games you've never beaten?
Do you feel like you are missing out on something when you can't finish a game? Either you feel like the unfinished game is a weight on your shoulders or depending on your level of completion you feel like you'd like the game more if you saw it through to the end, or maybe you're subconsciously afraid that you'll like the game less by finishing it. Whatever the case, there are games that you no doubt love but can't seem to finish them. What are they? And why can't you finish them? (too difficult, too lengthy, start to hate the hate a t a certain point, too boring after a certain point, or just never happened for whatever reason, etc)
Here are a bunch of mine:
• Battletoads - The poster child for this topic. I really love the game, and I'm not completely sure why, when 90% of the time I play it I cannot even finish level 3. I've never even seen more than half the game, yet I find it fun even to play those first three levels. I'll probably never beat it in my lifetime but it's still an NES game I enjoy.
• Kid Icarus - This one is not as difficult as Battletoads but I do find it kind of hard. But not finishing this one is more like having lack of patience. I like the game but every time I have to start a level over I always get discouraged. I've probably only made it halfway in the game but I still enjoy it despite only seeing a fraction of the game.
• Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse - Another one I find too difficult but still enjoy despite this. Probably due to a lack of patience like Kid Icarus, I just get discouraged every time I get game over and have to start at the beginning of a level especially when I find a level particularly daunting. I know I'd enjoy it more if I got further but even now I enjoy it.
• Super Castlevania IV - The game itself is not that hard, I can easily make it to Dracula, but for whatever reason I cannot beat him. I don't know why but I just can't. I love the game though and I've seen 99% of the game, so I can at least rate it accurately. Fantastic SNES game.
• Super Metroid - I've always found Metroid games particularly difficult. It took me years to finish Prime and Prime 2, and Fusion was very hard after a certain point in the game. But Super Metroid, despite it being my second favorite in the franchise (after Prime) I cannot finish the game. I've gotten very far, but one particular boss prevents me from finish it. I can only keep attempting for so long until I quit because the SNES controller gives me major hand cramps if I play too long. Still love the game though.
• Chrono Trigger - Maybe it's out of laziness or just bad timing every time I play but despite loving this game, I've never finished it. I've gotten very far, almost to the very end actually but I've never fought the final boss. It just seems that whenever I get towards the end I lose interest despite enjoying the entire game. One day I will actually finish it though.

Which boss is giving you trouble?
I can see not finishing the Prime games, because they are so "empty" relative to the 2D Metroid games in the series. Sometimes you hit a point where you're just wandering/exploring using your scanner to find SOMETHING to do.
In the 2D games, though, at least the ones with an auto-map, it's a lot easier to find how to proceed, IMO.
And for some reason I never finished tales of eternia although I really like it.
CastleVania III.
I can beat Dracula's Curse. That's probably the hardest NES game I can complete at the moment.

It's the Golden Torizo. I just cannot space jump long enough to avoid his attacks. Despite my best efforts I've never beaten this boss. It's not that I don't know what to do, but I just can't. :-/

I had to look that one up, because it didn't even register as a "boss fight"...
Do you have all your energy when you get there? What strategy are you using?
Jackal (NES) - The last level is tough. I've made it to near the end.
Battletoads (NES) - Furthest I've gotten is the fifth stage using a warp.
Super C (NES) - I've beaten "Contra" without the Konami code, but have only gotten as far as the fifth stage in "Super C".
Contra III (NES) - This game is murder. I can usually make it as far as the third stage.
Contra Hard Corps (Genesis) - Another game in the series that I fail at.
I'm no good at shmups so there are plenty those on various consoles that I enjoy playing, but have no chance of beating.
Ninja Gaiden III - I've single credit cleared the first game lots of times. I can complete the second game using continues. The third game is impossible and the third act is as far as I can get. But I've only played it on emulator. I plan on buying the cart at some point.
Mega Man 2 (NES) - I can't believe I haven't beaten this.
Castle of Illusion (Genesis) - I've gotten to the final boss.

Yeah I have all my energy. It's been a while since I last tried to fight it, but I know I was space jumping over it when it would jump towards me or attack but for some reason I keep losing my space jump and falling, to get attacked. I was using missiles and charged beams to attack. I know it starts to change color as I hurt it, and I'm pretty sure I've come close to beating it but I don't know what it is, I just can't seem to do it. :-/
Super Castlevania IV. I know every calls it "babby's first castlevania", but I can never seem to beat it. I have never even reached the stage 8 boss. I still love it and play it at least every month.
Super Castlevania IV is significantly easier than the NES games, but like you I've never beaten it. It took me a few years to even reach Dracula. But it's the one boss fight I cannot beat. But again I still think it's a very awesome game.
Legend of Zelda - Because I was only ever able to borrow/rent this game as a kid, I never have beaten it. However, that's something I'll be rectifying in the next few days, as I'm currently playing through it. I'm already on the 5th Dungeon. Look out, Ganon! I've got your number this time...
Ninja Gaiden - I can get to the second form of the final boss but I've never beaten him. Still, this game is just excellent in so many ways...if only the difficulty curve were a little less cheap...
Punch-Out! - Never beaten it and probably never will but it's easily one of my favorite NES games ever. Same can be said for Super Punch-Out!!, which I like even more than the original, though the reason I haven't beaten that one is because there's apparently some kind of glitch that's preventing me from unlocking the Special Circuit. I was able to do it with a rental copy I played on as a kid but for some reason, both the physical and emulated versions I've played recently won't unlock it even after multiple attempts.
Super Mario Bros. 2 - This, like Legend of Zelda, was another case of "rented but never owned". As such, I've never beaten it.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors - This is definitely in my top 5 games on the SNES. I've gotten near the very end (level 46...47?) but haven't finished it yet. I wanted to complete it as a "Halloween challenge" this year but ran out of time.

I quick read makes it sound like missiles are ineffective against the guy. Evidently he'll "catch" a super missile and throw it back, as well, but you can hit him with a barrage of super missiles, since he can only catch one at a time.
Other than that, charge beams.
Well, good luck, it's a great game with a lot more to do after that point.
Blaster Master - I've never gotten very far in this game (Stage 3 maybe?) but I still find it so much fun. It's on my shortlist of games to conquer in the near future.
Even owning this game as a kid, I generally never made it further than the Stage 5 boss (the big crab in the deep water level).
It was just sort of the demarcation point of how far I'd be able to get in one sitting... game really could have used a password.

Thanks for the tips. I'll get around to going back to it and finally finishing it eventually. It definitely is one of the all-time greats.

Yeah Blaster Master is another one I enjoy but never finished. I think I've only gotten to stage 3. It's a big game for doing it in one sitting and I also find it kind of difficult. Another one I'd love to finish at some point.
never beaten Zombies Ate My Neighbors (too many damn stages and too damn hard!), Ninja Gaiden (2nd to last boss), Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (Super Soda Popinski), Ninja Gaiden 3 (never played), Smash TV (never played), Tales of Eternia (never played), and Battletoads (Clinger Winger).
The rest I've beaten and gotten the best or all endings on, such as Bubble Bobble 2-player and Castle of Illusion Hard.

I've developed a good strategy for defeating that boss that works almost every time.
The important thing is being able to hit him with your sword without bumping into him. The fireballs only do one damage each. Bumping into him takes three damage.
First, you want to be on the ground most of the time and dodge the fireballs. They're not too difficult to dodge unless you stay on the platforms for too long and they start homing in on you.
Second, when you have the opportunity, jump onto the wall and then jump at him and slash him. Be careful to time it right so that you slash him without bumping into him. The timing takes a bit of practice. I always use the right side wall out of habit, but you can do it from either.
You might get hit with fireballs, but as long as you don't bump into him and you manage to dodge some of the fireballs, you'll win.
This strategy isn't anything fancy and it takes some patience, but I can usually beat him this way.
The third form of the final boss is even worse, IMO. He sprays projectiles that do three damage each, and sometimes dodging them amounts to luck. I often die on this boss and have to return with a weapon to take him out.
Probably Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Never owned it as a kid though I did borrow it from a friend one time. I've made it to Tyson but I never did beat him. Maybe one of these days.
I'm stealing your answer. Most games, if I enjoy them, I end up beating them.
I guess the only other one besites punchout I can even think of would be blood brothers for android. Mostly cause there was no end while I was playing it, but now there is.
TMNT -- same sort of thing... I ALWAYS, without fail, bonk my head on the critical sewer jump toward the end of Stage 3.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors - can reach the final boss
Advance Wars Dual Strike - I've been stuck on mission 22 or 23 for like 5 years
Contra III - I can only reach the 4th stage

"Contra III" almost borders on "too hard to be fun" territory for me. The NES Contras have the difficulty just right.

Yeah, I can beat Contra and Super C on 2-lives at this point but Contra III is just more unforgiving somehow. Contra: Hardcorps is also a b*tch, though I have considerably less time practicing with that one, so I couldn't say which is truly the tougher game.
I usually can beat most harder games if I put in the time and effort. I'm currently trying to beat Ghosts 'N Goblins. The furthest I've gotten is completely through loop 1 and I got stuck at the end of level 6 on the second loop with the two Satans. I am out of town until Friday and plan on giving another serious go then. The second loop of Ghosts 'N Goblins is definitely harder than the 1st time through...
Alot of mine are mentioned on the list but for me I would have to say that I thoroughly enjoy the difficulty. It's a nice change from some of the simpler games of today that have these "tutorials" and such!
