Vortex was NEVER a Transformers game...?

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/11/no_snes_super_fx_title_vortex_was_never_a_transformers_game

Just saw this NintendoLife article, and as anyone who has talked to me for more than ten minutes will guess, it's extremely relevant to my interests!

Even when I was a dumb little six year old I always liked to think Vortex was related to Transformers somehow, since at that point there really hadn't been any American Transformers games other than the super shitty C64 title and I'd always wished there was one. I'd heard the rumors that Vortex began life as a Transformers title but lost the license, but this is almost more interesting to me. What do you suppose happened to it? And did this have anything to do with the rumored Capcom fighting game that crops up sometimes?

Also: is Vortex any good? I've managed to get this far as both a Nintendo nerd and a Transformers collector without ever having played it.

  • IIRC Vortex was the offspring of Argonauts initial concept for Star Fox before Myamoto shot it down in favor of a rail shooter.

    I haven't played Vortex since I was a kid but I remember it wasn't really impressive gameplay-wise.

Ugh, god, that sounds awesome too! It kind of explains the weird chicken-walker concept in StarFox 2 that they're bringing back for Zero.

I assume it was kinda slow and clunky just like most other Super FX games, right?

  • It runs quite well like Star Fox 1 and 2, but I find it isn't nearly as accessible as either. It has a lot of instructions, a lot of things to collect and shoot, three different transformations etc. It makes impressive use of the SNES controller, kinda like Donkey Kong 64 did with the N64 controller. I guess I just need to spend more time with Vortex, maybe it gets more engaging later on.

If you end up liking Star Fox 1 or Vortex at all, you have to play Star Fox 2, it's a SuperFX masterpiece.

Every time I remember StarFox 2 exists I want to play it super bad but it just never winds up happening, I don't have a good excuse. I am pretty stoked that a few elements from it are showing up in StarFox Zero, at least.

Speaking as a Star Fox fan who put off Star Fox 2 until 2013, years and years after it was first made available, you are missing out big time. Star Fox 2 is the best game in the series I've played. I even like it more than Star Fox 64. It does so much with the Super FX chip while pushing the boundaries of what a Star Fox game is, while stil feeling just like one.

If Star Fox Zero is going to be anything like Assault or Command, I'm not gonna get too excited.
  • You know what, I feel like Assault gets a bad rap. It's not perfect, by any means, but I'd say it's easily the best one since 64 - I remember it controlled pretty well and I liked that it sort of got to the point a little better than Command did. Command had some neat ideas but I sort of hated that it wasn't level-to-level.
