N64 Fighting Game Itch

Hi guys! I've been having somewhat of a Fighting game itch, and I've been considering trying out some of the fighting games on the N64. Are there any that you guys would recommend in particular that stand out from the rest? And if so, what makes them unique/stand out from the crowd?

I've know of Hybrid heaven for one, and in my opinion it looks pretty darn awesome, but are there any others that stand out?

Edit: I'm aware that other consoles of the era probably had better fighters than the ones you could find on the N64, but I would prefer that this thread stay focused on fighters for the N64.

  • Depends what you consider a fighting game. There is Smash Bros of course as a great go to fighter on the system. The WWF/WCW wrestling games of this era are mad fun. You also have Ready 2 Rumble boxing.

But if you mean like traditional fighter, most of the great fighters of that era didn't come to the 64, you are better off picking up a Saturn/Dreamcast/NeoGeo. KI Gold is alrite, but most consider it a step down from KI 1 so your mileage may vary.  Most of the other fighting games for the system are terribad.
  • Any type of fighter is fine, it doesn't have to be a traditional fighter. I've never been much of a wresting fan myself, but I may end up looking into those two titles. I remember sinking countless hours into Smash Bros. back when I was younger, and I loved every minute of it.
  • As Fox said, traditional brawlers were not a strong suit of the N64, but it is home to the greatest wrestling games of all time. WCW/NWO World Tour, WCW/NWO Revenge, Wrestlemania 2000 and WWF No Mercy are almost certainly the 4 best wrestling games ever made, and all exclusive to the N64.
  • If you enjoyed Hybrid Heaven then Fighting Force 64 may be for you

    Essentially... Streets of Rage 3D
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy and MK4 come to mind.

Others that I can't vouch for, but are still fighting games:

    Clayfighter (and Sculptor's Cut)

    Dark Rift

    War Gods

But a big x2 on the wrestling games, those were some of the pinnacles of N64 gaming. Only the THQ ones, other ones are garbage.
  • MKT is really the only good once they have. I like war gods and think it's playable, some others don't. KI Gold is a bastard port, some people think it's good, these people have never played the arcade version. But it's playable in a pinch. The clay fighters are bad, but they're "normal" fighters at least. Mace is a mess, fighters destiny is just off, and everything else is a weird fucked up mess that makes me think "Have these people ever played a fighter before?!"
  • Fighters destiny is pretty cool. Solid reviews when it came out.

    It's a karate style fighter.
  • Mace: The Dark Age is a 1v1 fighter, but I can't really vouch for it.

To echo everyone else: Smash and the WWF/WCW games are the bees knees.
  • Mortal Kombat 4 and Super Smash Bros. are the two best objectively on N64.

Killer Instinct, Clay Fighter 63 1/3, and Clay Fighter Sculptor's Cut are fun games but flawed.

There's also Mace: The Dark Age, War Gods, Fighter's Destiny 1 & 2, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and Dark Rift, but I haven't played any of those. Mortal Kombat Trilogy is just ports of the original 3 games as far as I know, so if you enjoy those you'll enjoy that.
  • I really enjoyed MACE back in the day. The characters are cool and I love the open "world" fighting environments. You can be fighting in a pool one second then be in quick sand. It's one of my favorites. Sounds like mixed reviews in this thread but I say check it out for sure.

I second this, it's a pretty fun game solo or in co-op.

3rd this! still play this with my cousin!
  • Killer Instinct Gold is serviceable for what it is. It's hampered compared to the arcade games, for sure, but as fighting game offerings on the N64 go, it's worth playing.

You might also want to check out Xena: Warrior Princes: The Talisman of Fate. It's not really great by traditional fighting game standards but, again, for an N64 title, it's a fascinating attempt. See Matt Ezero's review if you're curious:

  • Darn, it sounds like I'll actually want to purchase some THQ wrestling games, I never thought that I'd see the day. Lol  I do like the look of Mace, and Fighters Destiny looks like my type of fighter as well. Which of the Fighter Destiny titles would you guys recommend? First, second, or both? Thankfully it doesn't look like anything here will break the bank, so I'll probably end up giving most of these games a fair shot. I just remembered that I do actually own Xena Warrior Princess and Clay Fighter 63 1/3, but it's been a while since I've played either of them. Perhaps I should dust the two of them off.

Admittedly that sounds pretty cool, I'll have to give this one a try.  I've never really given this game much more than a passing glance, but hopefully it's half way decent.

  • Best fighters IMO are MK Trilogy (no load times and exclusive characters) and KI: Gold.
  • I've gathered the names of all the fighters mentioned in this thread and put them into a poll, except for Smash Bros, because Smash Bros is awesome and most people already know it.

Thank you for the suggestions so far, everyone! I appreciate it.
  • CUSTOM ROBO V1 V2
  • I spent the most time on Fighter's Destiny 1 and 2, so those get my vote. My main criticism towards them is that the character's are uninspired.

I don't see Tom and Jerry Fists of Furry on the list but that's ok. It has nice graphics and some amusing level themes (my favorite being The Mice Before Christmas), but its small roster and shallow gameplay hurt its longevity. A 4 player mode like Xena and Smash Brothers would have went a long way.
  • Don't know why I didn't say Killer Instinct Gold before. That's my jam!
  • If playing Fighters Destiny always remember, play the big black man then left right b a right out of the blocks.

    This

  • I remember when Hybrid Heaven came out....I don't remember it being a fighting game?
  • A lot of these games i don't think are really fighters.......IMO

Wrestling and boxing to me don't count. Those are more like sports games in my eyes.

So i went with MK Trilogy.

But picking out of all those i would say WCW Revenge. That was me and my cousins go to game as kids.
  • No Smash Bros.?
  • Also... I chose WWF Wrestlemania 2000 because I couldn't pick Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

Some of these could be considered a gray area, especially since the N64 was so lacking in the first place.

Definitely not in the traditional sense, but I'm not exactly sure what to classify it as. It looks like a cross between an RPG and a fighting game of some sort. I've never actually played it myself though, so I could be wrong.

  • Clay fighter 63 1/3. That game is great, bust out sumo Santa and some cane pain
  • i'd vote for super smash bros and killer instinct gold. is super smash bros really considered a fighting game or just a fighting platform kind of game?
