Battletoads turbo tunnel is the only stage, in any game, where I have resorted to using an emulator's rewind to cheat. Even with that, I've never been able to beat it.

It's really not, IMO
It probably is, because of no lag. Any game that requires quick reactions is helped by being lag free.
I always trivialized the impact of lag, et al for most retro game emulation and on LCD tvs...until I experienced the difference first-hand. Both in JNES on my PC and on the Wii Virtual Console on my LCD, I have an absurdly hard time beating Soda Popinski in Punch-Out!. His uppercuts always seem to connect with me no matter how well I anticipate them. When I switch over to the physical copy on my NES hooked up to a CRT, I can beat him without getting hit once. So, apparently, there's a degree of lag between the controllers/displays on those emulated versions that just screws up my reaction time just enough to throw my game off.

"Punch-Out" is one of the worst victims of lag.
There are plenty of games that I've beaten on emulators... e.g. "Contra" w/o Konami code, "Ninja Gaiden" I've even one credit cleared on Nestopia (I can do it much easier on real hardware), all three "Donkey Kong Country" games, and "Super Punch-Out"... but "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out" is impossible once I get to Mr. Sandman.
The Turbo Tunnel becomes hilariously easy once you realize to push up or down as soon as you hear the swoosh sound as each block appears on the last section. I don't even die until Volkmire's now.

Thanks dude, putting this in my tip folder. I'll have to try it out
The game that's been the bane of my existence since I was a kid has been Star Voyager. I even game genied that bastard back in the day and still got dominated. On a less nostalgic note I've never made it past the 4th level of ghosts and goblins. Also those friggin stairs in ghostbusters

So many hours wasted on that piece of shit, lol. I got the blue laser probably once ever and found a guy on a planet (who I couldn't get to do anything) also probably once ever. I don't think I've ever even seen a mothership, much less been able to shoot it. The regular ships move too fast for me to hit more than one or two in the swarm before I take too much damage to hang around.
I never really thought of it as a hard game, since you have to actively seek out enemies. But it really is hard as hell.
Rush N' Attack. This game is infuriating. I have a problem with this game where when I turn around (left to right) or (right to left) I accidentally tap the up button, which is jump in this game. I'll then land on something and die. They should have made A jump, B knife, and have (UP+A) be the special weapon, like Castlevania.

It's friggin impossible but still one of my most nostalgic games. The issue comes in that the planets with the power ups are randomized and the whole time you're hunting, the aliens are gobbling up real estate. It's an I commented on beast of a game

Yes, any game (except 2-D fighting games) that use "Up" to jump really peeves me. Especially if it's a platformer.
2.) I'm frustrated by this style of gameplay where you have to get a crap ton of power-ups in succession and once you die it's basically game over. If I'm LUCKY, I can get to the third level without dying, and then I get killed on the third level and now I'm so under powered that it's over. Ugh. I'm amazed by people who can breeze through the entire game.
Maybe I should just use the 30 lives code for now.

Counting outloud really helps to!
Seriously; the sound cues are the secret to this game. All turbo tunnel obstacles and snow level snowman/snowballs make a sound when you're supposed to move/jump!

I just got "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out" in the mail today.
I can attest that the game plays so much better on real hardware on a CRT without the lag. I can actually dodge Mr. Sandman's triple uppercut. It was only the lag that made him tough. Playing on an actual NES, he's easy.

My NES emulation is on a tube TV regardless cause it looks "better"
Yeah. If you're emulating on a CRT and not a PC then there won't be as much lag.

Double post
1.) I suck at shoot em ups in the first place.
