Advice for someone new to Pokemon
So I was just a tad too old to get into Pokemon when they came out years ago. Now that I am getting into handheld systems again I'm thinking I might as well try out what all of the kids are talking about. The question I have is what order of games should I play in? I can read release dates but I thought I would ask the people familiar with the series what games I should play and in what order and perhaps if there are games I should just skip. I just received a super minty original Gameboy and am assuming I should start with the old grayscale versions. Thoughts?

There's always a "third" game for each generation that's enhanced in many ways and has extra features, I would go with those. In order it would be: Yellow for Gen 1, Crystal for Gen 2, Emerald for Gen 3, and Platinum for Gen 4. I would skip Gen 5 but that's just my opinion. A lot of the Pokemon designs were really terrible imo but it may click with you.

As for games you should skip? There really isn't any in the main series. It's more or less the same concept every generation just with new Pokemon, but for some reason it works.
Starting with Gen 1 is a good idea. Although some might bash it for being less refined and not aging well, it's still a very fun game to pick up and play today. It'll also make you appreciate the improvements each Gen made.

I mostly agree with this. If by gen 3 you realise you really like the series I would recommend coliseum and xd for GameCube. They are similar but different enough to still be enjoyable without getting stale. Also wouldn't disregard the remakes it's basically the same as the original with more stuff to do. But if you want the most out of the series go chronological. It's hard to go back to the old ones after everything they added in the new ones without the nostalgia.
Also if you find them too easy you could look up a nuzlocke challenge. I think they're lots of fun too.
So I see the "Red or Blue" thing and I know there are similarities between the versions so do I just play Red OR Blue or do I truly have to "catch them all" and play both versions before moving onto the next generation?
You don't necessarily have to play both. If you want all the Pokémon you will have to play both but that's entirely up to you. Other then a few different Pokémon the two versions are identical

Each version has a few exclusive Pokemon, that's about it. It was just a cheap way to make parents buy both games for kids.

+2
But I would go ahead and play gen 5.
I played the originals when they came out and personally I'd tell someone to start with fire red / leaf green. Its a lot easier on the eyes...
Agreed. Don't start with red/blue, go with the remakes, fire red or leaf green. I would go remakes for gen 1-3. Soul silver and alpha sapphire.
If you want that classic Pokemon feel......play Yellow....it is basically Red/Blue with some upgraded sprites and story.
Definitely play gen 1 and 2, though.

If you do that for every generation, you're going to be playing for a really, really long time. There's about 700-some pokes now.
If I were you, I'd start with FireRed/LeafGreen rather than Red/Blue, objectively FR/LG are better games. I personally prefer Red/Blue/Yellow, but that's just nostalgia speaking.
Though lacking much of the 1st era's aforementioned weirdness unforgettable to fans (glitches, early anime episodes...), they're longer and have more tutorial features.
I'd start at the beginning. If you enjoy the first one, then go to the next gen. This way would be my preference so that you can see the progression in terms of gameplay, graphics, etc.
Well said! You MUST start with the first one. Enjoy the games.
Play gen 1. Skip the rest.

Just play red or blue and be done with it
You buncha genwunners
Also, if you like the games, I'd highly recommend the Mystery Dungeon games. Again, the gen 5 one was shit, but the first MD games was awesome, and the second one was amazing, one of my favourite games of all time. There's a new one coming out soon, can't wait to try it - first time in years I'm hyped over a new game.

It was all about Red Blue and Yellow for me, I could never get in to any of the Pokemons after that. They're good games, I'm not saying they suck, I just couldn't stick with them.
I'm an old grouch...
