  • Zelda...all the way.
  • I'll go with DW2 since I've spent more time playing that than any other RPG on the NES, I think. Also, that title was of particular significance to me, as a kid, and nostalgia counts for something.

For the SNES I'll pick Arcana. It's not the longest or most involved game on the system, but it has a certain charm that a lot of other games lack. The artwork is good, the music is excellent, and it's one of the few true "dungeon crawls" on any console. As a kid, it was really neat to play that style of game on the "big" TV (27") rather than the dinky PC monitor I was used to. Also, I know Wizardry dungeon crawls exist on both the NES and the SNES, but they're so dark and feel really depressing as a kid. The mood in Arcana is so much more uplifting.
  • I hate RPGs for the most part, you needed a "they suck" option image

    ~~NGD
  • I am very biased as I've only played Zeldas and Final Fantasy RPG style games. I prefer Final Fantasy when I think of an RPG because Zelda strikes me more as an adventure game.

I do plan on playing a lot of SNES RPGs after my collecting slows down. As of now I don't really have time for games, I can barely find time to squeeze in a few hours a week, let alone the 40+ a good RPG should take!
  • for the snes there are so many good options for rpgs. rpgs are definitely my favorite style of game and the SNES was loaded with good ones. I had to go with Super Mario RPG. It's been my all time favorite game. But i have to say I totally love secret of mana and chrono trigger. Final fantasy 3 was also a superb game. All 4 of those rpgs are on the same level for me, but SMRPG wins out because of the good memories i had with the game (didn't own any of the others until recently.)
  • For NES I picked Zelda II, but this is more along the genre that I prefer most, platforming, action, adventure, tons of hackin' slashing the enemies, but thrown in some leveling up. For standard typical RPG, my all time favorite is the first Dragon Warrior, though DW4 is actually the best overall on the NES.

For SNES, Final Fantasy VI has always been my favorite, nothing can top that. Chrono Trigger was also great, but I only played that on the FF Chronicles for the PS, but I still favor FF6.
  • River City Ransom and Chrono Trigger for me..

and no NGD, there is not a they all suck option today.. sorry...
  • zelda and chrono trigger.. cant help beeing a zelda crank image
  • For the NES I would say RiverCity Ransom (Though this is more action adventure than it is RPG).

For the SNES its a toss up between Super Mario RPG (An absolute classic), BoF II (I loved playing this game as a kid, the build a town element that the game offers is very unique and original for its era), and lastly Soul Blazer (Goddamn I love this game) .

Of course FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Act Raiser, Wanders from Y's, and Secret of Mana are top notch as well. Fuck, I guess the SNES just has too many sweet RPGs huh?

  • Man, this is a tough one. I put Crystalis, but Zelda and Earthbound Zero were on the list as well.
  • Crystalis and Chrono Trigger for me.
  • River City Ransom and Breath of Fire II for me. Honorable mention to Shadowrun.
  • No RPGs for me either. Played FF VIII for PS1 for about 30 minutes, and that is the extent of my RPG career.
  • Zelda and FF3, however I lost my interest in rpgs also, because there are just far too many.

That's unfortunate.  You started with the WORST possible candidate.
  • I would have to say Illusion of Gaia for SNES
  • Crystalis and Chrono Trigger for me, even if I'm not that much into RPGs.
  • NES: River City Ransom

    SNES: All of them.

  • Zelda

Earthbound - this game was so new and fresh when it came out, so awesome!
  • I ditto Maximus
  • Nes: Zelda

    SNES: Chrono Trigger
