So, last night, right before I had to head out, I completed Zelda II!
I should point out, THIS IS YOUR FAULT!
If you didn't notice, that tileset was level 1. Yes, I beat level 1 with a level 4 attack, primed to bump it to level 5, I was mostly messing around with the route, was going to try to beat death mountian before getting the candle, but there's no way. I did pick up the life spell though. Then got spanked killing bubbles.
This is all I'm going to play this run though, was mostly testing out the new toy, it's a christmas present for my brother-in-law. It's going to be a very used one once I'm done configuring it and "testing" it.
Zelda II was the first game I used my own money to buy. $69.99 plus tax! About a week after I got it, it stopped working. I was so pissed. We called up Nintendo, and they had us ship it in. A week or so later, I got a brand new copy! Awesome game that I spent many hours playing. Beat it as a kid, and beat it again the last time about two years ago.
way to go man, I finished this game for the first time last december and it was worth it all these years later. glad to see a few others post the same thread that i wasnt the only one who revisited this game all these years later

Amazing game for sure! I'll definitely be replaying it in the future. There's a few different ways to level up, which adds quite a bit of replay value.

Congratulations on completing an awesome game!
It never ceases to blow my mind how pricey games still were back in the day; $50-$70 in 1985-1995 is a LOT of money, lol. I remember when DKC came out in '94, and it was $70 new at Toys R Us!
It truly was a journey. I remember trying to legit beat this game from start to finish back in 2003-2004, and not getting anywhere fast. It feels great to have finally completed this one!
I couldn't figure out how to damage the Thunderbird when I played this as a kid. I made it that far and that's where I got stuck.
The hilarious thing is, my girlfriend actually grew up with an NES (she's 28, and her sister is 34) and Zelda II, and would play it regularly. Of course, they were terrible at it, never knew about spells, and never made it anywhere at all. The part that made me laugh for a good five minutes is when she told me "The game for us was guessing which way the game over screen would be facing when it came on.", lmao.
She didn't believe I beat it until I showed her the picture evidence

When you finally beat Ninja Gaiden, I'd be interested to hear which one you consider to be the greater accomplishment. Those are definitely two of those most rewarding NES titles to beat IMO.

I'm interested to finally have the perspective and experience to answer that question. I swear, playing so much Battletoads has really raised my tolerance for persevering through the difficult classics.

I'm stuck on the third screen of the snake pit. I feel like I'll never figure out this stage. The first five levels don't even seem that bad anymore. I think I enjoy the ice level the most with the music, wintery atmosphere and platforming that is difficult but not too frustrating.
Then the next level Volkmire's is supposed to be one of the hardest in the game. Looking forward to trying that.

You WILL get through the Snake Pit. I make it through without dying once now, and I used to get hung up forever there.
You WILL also get stuck on Volkmire's. It truly is a brickwall of a level. I hate to say it that way, but it really is a pain in the ass. The last section is going to become a real test. None of the strategy others suggested seemed to work for me. As the Nerd infamously says: "The only way to do it, is to fuckin' do it."
