Some people just don't have the class or level of sophistication to appreciate a finely aged N64 game
Finely aged N64 game? That's something you don't hear every day!
and remember pinkies out when handling a controller made with such perfect craftsmanship. Its shows you truley understand a level of fancy that the commoners (NES and SNES collectors) just cannot grasp.
I tried playing a Smash Bros. game for the 64 with a child (under ten) and I could not figure the blasted thing out. I, sir, cannot stand those controllers. Or any made after the SNES, so maybe that says something... Yeah, technology is not my friend.

In sseriousnessnessness I like the N64 controller. Never had a problem with it and could always figure out how to control the games, on the other hand I hate the gamecube controller so my opinion is against the grain on the subject. I don't have a problem with N64 visuals either they don't look bad when used with a CRT or using emulation on an HDTV, you just cant mix original console with HDTV or it looks crappy.

I wish I could have a CRT in both rooms but my SNES and Genesis are hooked up to a flatscreen

Youcould always get an Ouya to play N64 on HDTV its wats I use when I visit friends in another state and I actually like the Ouya controllers when mapped out the way I want.

personally, I'm not much of a fan of the N64. I do think Perfect Dark and Conkers are must haves though. The Mario Parties are pretty good as well. Mario Kart and SSB are okay, but I didn't own them growing up and get killed by anyone wanting to play them .
I hate the marios and zeldas on this system. Really not a fan of the headache 3d graphics and open worlds.
I actually liked the gamecube controller a lot. I know i am in the minority here.
I think the Gamecube controller is Nintendo's best controller. There's a reason why they've supported it for three console generations.
Totally, it's my favorite smash brothers controller as well.
The triggers are the only thing i wasn't crazy about cause of how spongy they were. But if i recall weren't they spongy because they were pressure sensitive? As in if you lightly pressed it it did something different. I haven't played in so long i can't remember.

They are, but you have to almost press it to get it to work. Other controllers have done it better, which is why I think so few games use the feature.
Conversely, I struggle to remember that R3 and L3 are a thing on PS controllers, despite having played games on those consoles for over a decade and a half...
I see lots of n64 threads like this but hardly ever any snes or nes, despite the fact there is over twice as many games per consoles and still tons of shit on both
Totally agree. That's why someone like myself isn't going for a full collection of NES. Just the games I either played as a kid or wanted to play as a kid. I feel like people gravitate towards the N64, is because kids who grew up with that console are now older with jobs and some disposable income. Plus, as people have mentioned earlier, less than 300 games so you can collect most of them with relative ease. But, I absolutely agree with you. Tons of shit on the NES and not much gets brought up about it. Too many people blinded by nostalgia.

The NES and SNES have both held up rather well whereas the N64 has aged terribly. The thread is more about games worth owning even though most N64 games look like shit today.
The polygon 3d graphics, didn't age well, but that's only because they were new during the N64's time.

It is a shame how a lot of the N64 games were amazing then, but are just lame now. Most of the wrestling games are just awful, but were super fun to play when they came out.

Am I honestly the only one who always felt the N64 graphics looked like total garbage, even back when it was brand spanking new?

Definately not the only one. For those of us that were into PC gaming during that same period the N64 and it's graphics were a total joke.

The N64 far surpasses my preferences above the NES and SNES. The NES has aged very poorly in comparison to the Sega Master in terms of graphics,
yet people will defend it to their graves unlike the N64. I grew up with all the nintendo consoles, and I do prefer the N64 any day.

I'll gladly take Commander Keen or Hugo's House of Horrors over N64 graphics any day. I mean, I like to masturbate as much as the next guy but I try not to get it all over the screen.

I want trying to bash the N64. I didn't mean to sound that way. The N64 is great. I love my N64 titles. But I think there are plenty of NES and SNES titles the will hold up forever because 2D animation and environements were done so well. It all depends on whether you can tolerate polygons or not when it comes to the N64.
I see lots of n64 threads like this but hardly ever any snes or nes, despite the fact there is over twice as many games per consoles and still tons of shit on both
Agreed.
I just had coffee so I'll try not to ramble too much...
Some people forget the N64 was the start of something new (3D) for home console gaming. I could say Atari games look like complete crap too because they fall under the same category, the start of something new. I think maybe comparing 2D consoles to 3D is like apples and oranges...not really a fair comparison. I think most Game Boy games look horrible, colorless, and dull but once again...it was the start of something new (handheld gaming). By the time GBA came around (2001), PC games looked pretty good while the GBA looked like a slightly enhanced SNES from 7 years prior (think DKC '94 and onwards SNES). The time it takes to develop and implement console technology leads to this constant feeling of playing catch up with modern technology. Only now in PS4/XBONE era do we see the smallest differences between PC and console than ever before.
In the early days of N64, 4 out of 5 of my best friends owned N64 while me and 1 other had Playstation (consoles chosen by our parents in those days). So if you're old enough to remember what 1996-1999 (early years of N64) felt like, you know how popular N64 was. Yes PC games looked much better but also keep in mind how much $$$$ PCs were back then compared to N64...PC-thousands of dollars...N64-a couple hundred. For a typical family on a budget, it was a no brainer to buy a home gaming console such as Playstation or N64 to entertain their kids.
I think Nintendo was trying to do something new and bold with N64. Sure some of the games look a little rough but it's an acquired taste no different than someone who likes 8 and 16bit games in 2015.
This goes back to the question of "Do graphics make or break a game?". If all your favorite N64 games were remastered like the 3DS versions (OoT, MM, Starfox 64) would you appreciate them more or still have an attachment to the original? Imagine some of your favorite NES/SNES games as nothing more than a book...would it still be a good enough story to keep your attention? Certainly N64 games look worse by comparison to todays standards but in the mid to late 90s the only complaint I ever heard was how N64 didn't have FMVs (full motion video) like Playstation did. Perhaps if Nintendo would have switched to discs like they were testing with N64DD, we might have had a completely different console.
I personally enjoy N64 but I don't play it nearly as much as I used to. That's partially due to the lack of people around to play local multiplayer games with. I think there's less than/no more than 100 games worth owning for it (just under 1/3 of the library). I feel the exact same way about every console that came out prior to PS2. There's no more than 40-100 games per console that I personally enjoy on them, regardless of what era they came out.
All game systems have good and bad games no matter the graphic quality IMO. I agree with most the N64 game lists people have already posted here so I'll refrain from posting my own list.

You basically said 100% what i wanted to say but i felt like its kicking a dead horse in the face. You can't relate 2D to 3D and say this is better than that, it's two different art styles. For what its worth the N64 paved the way for modern games.
You are right though, it's even the same with cars. Every new technology struggles at first. Fuel injected engines sucked at first but got way better as time went on.
Even though the N64 is possibly my least favorite of Nintendo's home consoles (running right alongside the Wii), there are still a number of good titles for it.
Even from my limited experience, here's a hearty list of great N64 titles based on what I've played:

The polygon 3d graphics, didn't age well, but that's only because they were new during the N64's time.
It is a shame how a lot of the N64 games were amazing then, but are just lame now. Most of the wrestling games are just awful, but were super fun to play when they came out.
Am I honestly the only one who always felt the N64 graphics looked like total garbage, even back when it was brand spanking new?

Definately not the only one. For those of us that were into PC gaming during that same period the N64 and it's graphics were a total joke.

Go ahead and pick up pretty much anything by Nintendo or Rare. The third party software is a little more dicey but I made a list.

Yea, Rare was a powerhouse on the N64.

Here's my list:
Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage
Banjo-Kazooie

You basically said 100% what i wanted to say but i felt like its kicking a dead horse in the face. You can't relate 2D to 3D and say this is better than that, it's two different art styles. For what its worth the N64 paved the way for modern games.
You are right though, it's even the same with cars. Every new technology struggles at first. Fuel injected engines sucked at first but got way better as time went on.
