**SNES Monthly Contest Leaderboard & Rules 2016**
Welcome to the monthly SNES contest, new to 2016. We will be playing one or two games every month up until November, with the points leader being crowned champion in December. There is no tournament (yet), but there will still be prizes for the top three finishers.
Also, thanks to the NES crew for the ideas and support for this companion contest. I'm still learning, and improving this thread every day

General Contest Rules
Posting Scores
- Pictures will not be are required. This is a revision of my previous thoughts because that is the sentiment from people participating.
- In order to submit a score for the contest, take a picture of your score with your user name written or typed on a piece of paper, which must be present in the picture. Your user name mustbe in the picture or the score will be invalid. The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid. No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted. No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed. You must take a picture of your computer monitor. There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself.
- When posting a new score, please begin your post by typing out your score. Larger font (18pt) is preferred.
- If you are posting an updated score, please edit your initial post with the new photo and score. You can still create a separate new post as a bump to notify you edited your score if desired.
- Please do not begin a competition run on the new title before the 1st of the month, 12AM NA time. Please do not post a score for said title on or after the 1st, 12AM NA time, of the following month. Feel free to do practice runs of any of the titles whenever you want.
- Emulators ARE allowed to be used in the monthly contests. However, anything that may give a player an advantage with an emulator over playing on the system is NOT allowed. This includes, but is not limited to, save states, Game Genie codes, altered ROMS, and turbo controls. It is preferred if everyone plays on a console.
- A PowerPak IS allowed to be used in the competition with the same regulations as with emulators. You may not use save states, Game Genies codes, altered ROMs or anything else that would give you an advantage over playing with the regular cartridge.
- Each month players who submitted scores will earn points as follows.
- 11 points to 1st place, 10 to 2nd, etc. 11th place and lower will earn 1.
- Players who compete but are unable, for whatever reason, to provide a score or time will be given participation credit
- Starting in May, we will have two games running in tandem each month. There will be seperate leaderboards for each, and seperate points awarded
- At the end of the year everyone will have their lowest score dropped. Effectively, you get a free pass to be terrible at or skip one game, with no consequences.
- The overall champion will be the combined points leader after 12 months
- Will be awarded to the top 3 finishers.
- In addition, the overall champion will get to select one game for next year's slate
- If anyone wants to donate to the pool; even crap like copies of Jurassic Park, they are appreciated.

Looking forward to posting a score! I suck at this game though.
Please require pictures (I know this probably belongs in your previous thread). I like looking at pictures in contest threads Plus, pictures can help ensure that any requirements are met (e.g. for some games, having to stop at a certain spot and capture your score).

How about I just heavily encourage them? One thing I've learned from the "can na beat every" threads is that some people just do not want to take the 5 minutes for pics. And in order for this thing to get some momentum I feel like we need all the participation we can get. But yes, if some new account posts some highly suspicious score, that can change
Anyways, rules updated
No but seriously thanks for starting this up. A SNES contest is something I've wanted since I signed up here!
Awesome! Unlike the NES contests, I'm actually participating in this! I look forward to trying to take the top spot! (Though I probably won't) Look out in September because Tetris Attack is my jam!

In 20 years I've made it to level 4 (or 5?) of Contra III once, and my Super Metroid time will probably be north of 10 hours

Lol if I even make it to level 2 in Contra III that will be the furthest I've ever gotten. Really the most difficult game I've ever played. I've ashamedly never finished Super Metroid. My latest save file is stopped near the end, but there are 2 or 3 bosses til the end that I just can't beat. Chorizo statue or something? Cannot beat it for the life of me.
No worries, I'll award participation to people who at least start a game of Super Metroid

Pics should be required with the same criteria as the NES contests. Especially if prizes are involved. The completion lists are a "just for fun" thing, so not requiring pictures isn't an issue because there's no real incentive for people to cheat. With a contest, there needs to be some sort of verification process, and pictures are the easiest way to do it.
Rules are updated
Andy, no name in your pics but Ill grandfather them in since I changed the rules after-the-fact

Mmmm...chorizo! You're making me hungry!
Shouldn't scores be comparable, i.e. all start from the first level?
Usually, you'd post your score along with the stage you reached on 1 credit (at least in shmups that's pretty much how we do it).
I'm not familiar with this game, does it loop?
Yep. After you beat the game, there's a second loop with a higher difficulty level.

Does it loop forever like Contra or is there only 1 extra loop?

Lolz! If someone could photoshop me a Chozo statue made of chorizo, I'd die a happy man.

I've never finished the second loop personally, but I believe that it keeps going. The TG record is 1.5 million with a 5 life limit and since there's an in game time limit, I'm guessing that it just keeps starting over on the more difficult loop.
I'm not familiar with this game, does it loop? Also, allowing passwords to skip ahead into the game seems very bizarre for a contest.

I was only doing that because I did not think the game looped and I couldn't figure out how to disprove someone had skipped ahead, or why they would want to
Anyways rules updated. I'm learning here
A) I suck
If you're about to die on your final life, or on some tricky platforming, I recommend you get your pic
Anyways not a big deal for me since I got owned on level 3, so I'll be back again tomorrow with a slightly less terrible showing.
