Completed another game today, good ol Fun n' Games.
Like your description said, Mouse Maze stops at lvl 25 and Space Lazer stops at lvl 5. Both just show a Game Over screen when you finish them.
Both were easy and took 2 tries each. Space Lazer is kinda BS though, the boss can endlessly hit you and I couldn't find anyway to make him stop hurting me. So you pretty much have to go into lvl 5 with a decent amount of energy or you won't withstand the last fight. Maybe I'm just overthinking a shitty game....
If I weren't moving, I'd be helping a lot more. NES is about all I can play in an emulator -- I find it hard to play Genesis or SNES that way -- so that and Game Boy have monopolized my gaming since June. In a week I'll have moved, though, and once I'm set back up I'll try to start chipping away at the list. I'd like to contribute at least 5-6 more games this year, including Lord of the Rings if my wife is willing.
Well Pro Sports Hockey is pretty ridicilous. Thanks to a review on gamefaqs I know where to shoot from to score. And my AI goalie seems unbeatable. As in, the last two games I took the lead then just set the controller down for the rest of the game and won with a shutout.
The only problem is I have to play the entire 82 game season.
Bebe's Kids is terrible, but I made it a little ways into the game earlier this year. With persistence and planning (i.e. a bit of mapmaking), and making sure you know all the character's attack moves (since IIRC you can't progress without the stronger ones), I think it's doable.
I take back what I said about Pro Sports Hockey. The game is fucking horrendous. Every single time I take the lead the AI rubber-bands it back to a tie. Literally, 6 games in a row. They tied it up approximately 10 times. Every game was a tie. I started 4-0 and am now 4-0-6. And trying to actual do anything is laughable. Everything just pinballs off one another
Hate hockey. Hate hockey games. Especially hate this.
Well, I haven't played anything in a bit, but I'm kinda feeling SNES RPG-ish, so wish me luck...I'm gonna fire up Lagoon for the first time ever...no guarantees that I'll like it, but I figured I'd see if anyone else was gonna fire it up before I stepped on anyone's toes
Well, so far I'm actually kinda liking it! It takes a bit of getting used to, but it kind of reminds me of the first Ys game, but easier. I've already passed the first boss, and just talked to the old man after finding the third tablet. I am getting a bit annoyed by having to wait for NPCs to catch up to you, but overall the game isn't as bad as I was expecting. Hopefully it stays this interesting for the rest of the game
EDIT: Make that two bosses down. Just arrived in the Dwarf village. Calling it a night though...my meds are kicking in, so I'm gonna zonk out soon. Still, it's fairly easy...if the difficulty stays about the same, I should have it beat soon enough.
I know I had difficulty with one boss (the one in the fire area?), that I only defeated when he got stuck on my sword or something and it bugged and he died near-instantly
And the final boss sequence took me a decent number of tries.
Yeah, I had a bit of trouble with him. Then I watched a video with a guy at level 6 taking him on, and I was like "I'm more than double that, I should have no trouble" and beat him on my next attempt. Sometimes it just takes a bit of luck. I'm now in the Ice Cave. I assume there's not much more to go, but I'm still enjoying the journey. You made the game sound terrible, and while it has it's flaws, it's not really that bad. It's no top 10 material or anything, but for a '91 release, it's pretty damn good.
Man, that Ice Cave boss was BRUTAL. Oh man, so much frustration!
Anyway, I'm almost at the end of the road. Just gotta kill Battler and move on to the "Secret Place" and finish the game. So close, and yet so far. I'll likely have it beat in the next few hours, I just felt like taking a "My thumbs are killing me" break
I tried Brain Lord once, couldn't get into it. I might try it again at some point, but for the time being I think I'll hold off.
Anyway, I just finished Lagoon. Seriously, I'm not sure why you don't like it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Granted, there's not much reason to play it a second time, but I could see myself playing it again in the future. Now, what to play next...
Anyway, I "beat" King of the Monsters, but it told me to play on a higher difficulty. Also, I think the number of credits used might also factor into the ending, as I saw a longplay vid that had a really cool ending on default settings, and I don't think he continued once. I'm not sure if there are different endings for higher difficulties, but it seems that you would at least have to beat Normal difficulty. That said, it's hell on the thumbs, so I'm not gonna do it tonight. A tip for anyone thinking of tackling it though - go into the options and jack the time up to the maximum. If the other monster beats you in a fight, you get to continue with full health against an opponent with whatever health he had left is, whereas if you lose because time runs out, both players regenerate up to half health and fight again, so it's actually to your benefit to have longer time limits...if you lose the fight, at least you have full health.
bronze knows the exact stipulations, and he tried to explain to me but I couldn't really follow
But yeah higher difficulty and/or 1CC
According to Chimaera on Sega-16, the deal with the Genesis version is:
"To get the actual ending, you have to play at the hardest settings available. Mania mode, 3 minute rounds, and only 3 continues."
I assume it's probably the same for the SNES version.
Is that an actual ending or the "best" ending? Like I said, I watched a Let's Play that used default settings (Normal, 3 minutes, 3 credits) and there was an ending. Not sure if it's only difficulty specific or if the other settings matter too.

I don't know about the SNES version, but I'm told that in the Genesis version, those settings (Mania/3/3) are the only way to get an ending that doesn't say "YOU TRY NEXT LEVEL".
However, it also says "CONGRATULATIONS ALL STAGE CLEARED" first, so it's sorta sending mixed messages there: in my world, CONGRATULATIONS = beaten game. (See this post on Sega-16 for screenshots.)
But the Mania/3/3 settings are the only way to get a non-text, longer ending.
I'm fine with messages that say try the next level, as long as they accompany an ending of "some" sort. Hence why I raised the requirements on Contra III and Biker Mice since they do not.
I'll try to review some longplays later tonight if we need to make a ruling here
On a side note I'm through 55 games of Pro Sports Hockey. Luckily the games can be shortened so they only take 7-8 minutes each, and after the first or second period I can usually set the controller down and do other things while letting the clock run out.

And 1 game away from 200 greens remaining

It is.
I need a shower and a different game. I don't know if I'll come back to it to beat it.
Edit:
I just got Realm and will probably give that a go in the next week or so
I do like me some pool so I intend to secure the 1st place there before venturing back to the SNES.
I'm still trying to muster the energy to even give it a go
Championship Pool is still outstanding too
I can't lose that one.

It's pretty short

Might I recommend Brainlord next for your action RPG needs

Did any one beat magic sword yet?
Looks like it's still available.
