I think that a password system for such a short game is kind of ridiculous. Maybe they could have kept the infinite continues, but I don't mind the limited continues.
"Ninja Gaiden III" fixes the two major annoyances of the first two games: enemy respawning and severe knockback. And the boss battles are a breeze for the most part. The changes to the North American release compensate for the game being easier in other ways, and helps keep the challenge level on par with the rest of the trilogy. I'm glad that the NA version is the way it is, even though it's the black sheep of the series.
People also complain about the silly sci-fi plot, but who cares... I always skip the cut scenes anyway.
I wouldn't have minded a password system since it would let you skip to whatever level you wanted, but unlimited continues have been fine too. The sci fi plot is kind of silly, but I think it was better than rehashing the demon story for a third time. They tied it back to Foster from Ninja Gaiden, so at least it made sense continuity wise.
Hey man, I managed to "one death" Ninja Gaiden III the other day. I killed myself on the last stage to reset the timer and that was the only death.
It's possible to no death if you're really fast and have the invincible fire shield, but I can't do it.
Now that I got my damn computer fixed after about three weeks I can jump back in on this.
I was gonna say my BIGGEST issue about the game is not how hard it is at the end, its the damn timer! Why is it it doesnt reset to max between levels or when you get to the boss! Ive gotten there in 1 life, but then have like 30 seconds to beat all 3 bosses. WTF is up with that? Once you start at 7-3 I have a different strat to run thru that level without the invincible fire wheel.
I thought about maybe next time doing it with the fire wheel and maxing out your ninpo (sp?) but then change to the regular fire wheel right before the first boss.
Nice. I did this last year but i forgot all the secret areas. Once you get it, its pretty easy but you NEED all the power ups, and not die at the 4th level boss haha.

Yeah, the timer is ridiculous. It's not like the game isn't difficult enough on its own.

This game is hard as balls. I can see why it has a score of 10. I haven't made it past the second stage. But I'm not the best at shooters.

I actually thought this game was pretty easy. The only level that held me up a little was the motorcycle level because I didn't realize I was doing a wheelie everytime I held the d-pad down and that prevented me from jumping across the gaps at the right time. Also with the hidden powerup spots you can basically get your levels up at so many points in the game. Unlike a game like Gradius that when you lose your powerups you're basically dry fucked in the ass with a cactus.
I would probably give this game a 5 out of 10 on the difficulty scale.

Nah, 10 is too much, but 5 is too low. Solid 7. Because you NEED to not continue thru the whole game to get to the final level and if you lose your powerups at the last true level, good f'n luck, its near impossible.
The first time I got to the last stage that happened.
The second time I kinda knew what i was doing and it was much eaiser, i then beat the entire game AGAIN including getting the true ending again cuz i knew where everything was. Def a 7, cuz i beat it within a week or two of getting it.

The strict timer makes it a real accomplishment to no death. That there are Youtube videos of other people doing it gives me hope.
Thanks, Brock. But didn't crabmaster2000 beat almost 125 games in the 2012 NES Challenge? And that year's list only included the licensed US games. Granted, this thing gets bigger every year, so the really easy stuff flies away faster and faster. I do think earning 100 completions is harder amongst all this competition. I know I've already slowed down, despite my shocking productivity today. But given the length and difficulty of most of the remaining games, it's going to be hard for one player to smash on a bunch of them single-handedly. I don't know if I'll catch crabby's 2012 mark; I'm not sure if anyone else ever will.

WCW Wrestling completed. This is the first time I've ever beat this game so it took me 3 days to do it. Very challenging, probably the hardest wrestling game ever made but still kinda fun if you get used to game's mechanics
So with RBI Baseball and Gargoyle's Quest completed, we're now done with all 2 and 3 point games:

We're a couple of weeks behind 2015's pace, but I'm not worried since we finished in only 6 months last year. Plenty of time remaining.
I did notice the Rainbow Islands discussion earlier this week. I've been thinking about that a little bit. I've said before that if a PAL or Famicom game is pretty similar to the US version, then it's fine to count it playing those versions as a completion. I also decided last year not to count the European Mario Bros., which is slightly different. There are a lot of differences in the two Rainbow Islands, although the basic gameplay is still the same.
I was going to say that we probably shouldn't count it as separate, but then I realized that we do count both of the versions of Ms. Pac Man (licensed and unlicensed). So I guess in light of that, we'll have to add the PAL Rainbow Islands to this year's list. I'll count it as 5.5 points.
My first thought on adding Rainbow Islands to the PAL list is that it's going to kind of even up the games from a point value. When you have two extra games above an even split, as with the NTSC licensed list, you just add one extra 1 pointer and one extra 10 pointer. That's a bit cleaner than putting one or two games at 5.5. This of course won't apply until next year.

Yeah, the timer is ridiculous. It's not like the game isn't difficult enough on its own.
Now I am off till the weekend.

Records were made to be broken
My god finally.
Good job, Foochie. That one is pretty tough. Are you still playing through Krusty as well? That's another brutal puzzle game.
Lolo has taken all my attention as of late but I chip at Krusty here and there.. Not sure if I want to continue on with that or pick up something new!
After I did, I definitely feel this way:
