Can NA beat every N64 game in a year ? (2016)

  • It only took me a million years tonight, but I finished Rampage: World Tour. I'd only ever played a few minutes of the arcade game before tackling this one. It's super repetitive and not fun after playing for eons, but I did it. Whew. I didn't understand at first that the dots on the map marked the locations of the evil laboratories that you're supposed to destroy (didn't know I had that objective) because I was being slow (and a bit tipsy, shh). Plus, I guess the city cycling is random? So the game dragged on and on, till I'm pretty sure I played every city available, including some random places. I mean, seriously. How are there 3 locations in Alaska in a video game? Ha. Anyway, the game is thankfully pretty forgiving with unlimited lives (or, I reckon, "continues"). I can't see playing this one again for a while, but I do want to check out the other one available on the 64; I don't currently have it, though. Time to hunt down a copy.

    It's actually time for sleep!

Edit: Am I right that this game has never been completed for these yearly threads? I just looked through the past ones for kicks. It'll be my sad claim to fame henceforth.

Indeed, it was never done before. That's a total of 5 points for this game alone. Congrats !

Rad. Congrats to you and bag on those hockey completions! Good stuff. I've never played any of the hockey games. Maybe I'll tackle one of the others if someone doesn't beat me to it; I think I have Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98.

I had to resort to Rampage last night after a few hours of frustrated attempts at completing Bust-a-Move 2: Arcade Edition. Ugh.

They were a very common rental in my household amongst my friends as well.

I will be picking them up as soon as I run into them.

  • Since you guys are the hardcore 64 players around here, I just have to ask; what sticks are you using? Gamecube-style? Horia controllers? Great-condition orginals?

A major obstacle for me contributing to this thread is my controllers all drive me insane inside 10 minutes

I use pretty solid originals. I've kind of got a stable of controllers than range from complete garbage sticks to like-new. I'm not really a fan of the Gamecube stick replacements, even though some people swear by them. I've had some positive experiences with certain replacements that are like the original, but I've never done them myself.

I want to try out a Hori pad so badly! But I don't want to plunk down like $70 for one when I don't mind the regular controller and have several of them.

Not gonna lie dude, I have never had an N64 stick screw up on me and I still have my original.

No clue what people are doing to those poor things.

I understand your dislike towards them though they are pretty funky. They can come in use though for games that require lots of running around since you can hold it in one hand and use the control stick with your thumb.

I use an original controller. The joystick is annoying me right now and I need to buy a new one. My thumb suffers a lot.

Also, for your information, I didn't do any game today and won't either tomorrow. I passed the entire day at the hospital for my ear infection and I will see my friend tomorrow. Next game will probably be Paperboy for me. I'm going to miss playing ! I'm counting on you guys.

Sorry to hear that, Michel! Hope you feel better soon. I'm sure that's unpleasant, to say the least.

In other news, Cruis'n USA is finished! I cranked it up while taking a break from Goldeneye (which is almost done, too). I really disliked Cruis'n when I first got it: simplistic, annoying traffic, etc., but I have to admit I had fun completing it. Pushes back just enough to have a pretty satisfying gaming session, even though it's an easy game, overall.

I have a ton of the originals.  Most of the sticks are really good.  Only ones that really got screwed up were the ones we used for Mario Party...  Screwed up the center of your palm as well haha.

  • Star Wars - Shadows of the Empire is done and will post pics once I get on PC.

Banjo I am Click Clock Wood.....I don't know what it is with that game but once I go to a world, collect a bunch of notes then die I have to put it down and just try it the next day.

It is taking way longer than I expected though..then again I haven't attempted to beat it in probably 10 years.....

Quest 64 is coming along to in the search for the last orb or whatever the hell they are so hopefully should have that one done by the end of the week as well.
  • Pic added, I have no idea what happened but I went to go finish Banjo-Kazooie this morning and I pressed B on my file and it deleted it for some reason!??!?

I am not to happy about it but there is no way I am going back and doing it allover again as I just had to go beat Gruntilda

    Ugh

Oh no ! Did you reset the console to see if it is still there ?
  • Started Ocarina. Just blazing through and not really doing any side quests, I got to the forest temple in a little over three hours. I think I can finish it tonight.

That sucks! I've had that happen with other games, and it's a heartbreaker. Does that game have a battery save? Which 64 games do? I know it's not many, right? Maybe you'll feel better about tackling it again later in the year? I know I'll rage at a game and damn it to hell, and then three hours later sometimes, the game is magically on my TV again, and I've got a controller in my hand? Not sure how it happens, ha.

Update: Goldeneye is done! Really had fun with it this time. Not gonna lie. I just beat it on Agent, so I could run-and-gun to my heart's content. Only got hung up once, really. In Control, I somehow let Natalya die after she hacked the satellite stuff. Didn't even realize it happened till I'd completed the level. I think what actually happened is that I didn't wait for the objective to show up on my screen as finished. She takes a bit to get to safety, I suppose.

It does not use a battery save it is flash memory

I think it was just a timing issue as most glitches/bullshit is.......It literally just flashed very quickly at the file selection screen and then said SAVE FILE 1 with no time information etc.

It really sucks that with those games you can't make a backup save.

Yeah, that flash memory can be funny sometimes. It seems to be a problem with whether it's able to load or not. You're probably gonna turn it on again one day and your save will be back.

  • Kirby 64 is done, peeps. I want to love this game so much more than I do. I love the combo copy abilities and the music in this game, but the gameplay is just lacking. Too slow and clunky. None of the fluidity of Kirby Superstar or even the three Dream Land games. Still, big fan of the series, even this one.

Ha, if it seems like I have nothing else to do, it's because I don't. Trying to roll strong before the semester starts (I'm a teacher/grad student), when I know I'll have significantly less time for gaming.

I really need someone to sell me a copy of this one...I rented it once with a buddy and we beat it and havent played it again since it was released.

Good luck with the search, Toxie. It's one I've played several times, despite its flaws. Thankfully, this game hasn't blown up too crazy pricewise. I know several months ago I had an extra copy and traded it, and it was only going for like $15 or so then. I did a quick check, and it seems to have creeped up a little, but still not unreasonable.

I just made an offer on one that is actually only about a 30 min drive from me so maybe he will hook it up since it is local (kinda) hahaha!

He accepted my offer, should get it next week!

  • That's rad, Toxie! Let us know what you think of it when you get a chance to play.

Possibly my last game for today: Wave Race 64 is done (?). I looked in last year's thread, and it seems this is all you get, no credits? Here ya go. Let me know if I need to do more or something. I really enjoy this game. I used to just dick around doing tricks for hours when I was a little kid. Super fun, light, enjoyable game, all around.

Rad. I've never played the N64 Paperboy. Let us know what you think, obvi.

I wasted a bunch of time on Mickey's Speedway USA. I didn't realize that you needed to collect things to unlock the last one or two circuits, and I just didn't like it enough to sink another

chunk of time into it. I'm currently playing through Perfect Dark, as Goldeneye gave me a hankering to actually complete PD (never have!). I'm going to try to knock out some shorter games, too, but I'm not sure what yet--maybe a random sports title?

Edit: I forgot! I also really want to tackle Mario Party 2. Actually, I might take a break and try to knock that out tonight/tomorrow.
  • Ocarina of Time is done. Gosh that game is longer than I realized. You guys have all seen the ending, right? No need for pics.

Congrats! That's a long one, for sure, in my book. Every time I try to play as an adult, I end up quitting before the end. It's my dirty secret.

I'll add one to the fire tonight, too. It's not any of the ones I mentioned; PD will take a bit (for me), and Mario Party 2 is going to take a couple days, I think, if just because it's super boring to play by yourself. Killer Instinct Gold is done. I used Glacius and just button-mashed like a loser. But there it is, nonetheless.
