What is the official count of total US NES titles?

I think I read this somewhere, but to possess every cart, licensed or unlicensed, released in the US only, I seem to recall it being 765 games.  Is this right or wrong?  Also, what portion of them are unlicensed?

This doesn't include homebrews.

  • There are 744 games (licensed and unlicensed). 97 Unlicensed, 90 if you don't include the Aladdin games, and 89 if you don't include Racermate. 677 Licensed. So, I suppose it could also be 766 or 767 total (I personally think racermate counts, but that's me).
  • And here I've been thinking 776 all along...guess I'd better edit some stuff image .
  • are you guys counting the PAL games in the 766/767??

*EDIT* nevermind i saw the US thing in the first post, sorry

Er, so which is it?  Heh.  I'm guessing the higher number.
  • I have never counted cause I have never cared. I just want it all image

  • lol. nice theory NGD...

if u are going for a complete ntsc set licensed and unlicensed i would say 754...

here is a list of whats not included in that #

    7 aladdin game's
    racemate cart
    action 52
    cheetahmen 2
    maxi 15
    1990 NWC
    caltron 6 in 1
    myraid 6 in 1
    none of the 3 pannesian's
    no sachen games included
no ntsc games with label variations included

the skys the limit if u want pal games and label variations and have a boat load of money to spend lol..
  • well nes_king. I can see eliminating the aladdin games as they weren't sold in stores and racermate as it was sold as a system w/ nes capability, and cheetahmen2 as it was never released, and NWC as it was a prize, even maxi 15 as it could be considered just a compliation of other released games.

However, even if you consider myraid and caltron variations of each other you still should include one or the other. And the panesians and action 52 were released games in north america. If you are going to collect the unlicensed stuff thats exactly what they are.

Now sachen stuff.....not a clue what to classify it as.

On a different note. I think the difference between 744 and 766 are the games that double up licensed and unlicensed like gauntlet or rbi baseball. Also games made by different manufacturers like pac-man or indiana jones. And then you would also have the aladdin games doubled up as they were also released as regular carts.

So if you count pac-man tengen (licensed) pac-man tengen (unlicensed) and pac-man (namco) as 1 game then 744 is your number. If you count them as 3 games you need 766 is your number.
  • Sachen can almost be commented on as a person, not unlike Bunny Boy who has made their own cartridges and tried to market them to the public.  Granted...Sachen games are terribly made and play just awful and I believe they were released after the NES system stopped making games (these characterists are what I believe puts them as not officially counted in the NTSC game lists).
  • i was just saying in my opinion u dont need any of those to really have what i consider a complete set... but as i said it aomost never ends if u dont want it to.
  • ok so what would the final count be with all the normal label variations, like gunsmoke, matroid, untouchables etc. and counting>

    action 52

    cheetahmen 2

    maxi 15

    caltron 6 in 1

    myraid 6 in 1

    3 pannesian's

NO 5 screw 3 Screw Stuff either.

Would be kinda cool to know the exact number counting those. Everytime i meet someone and they see my collection they are always like "how many are there to have them all?? And im always like uhhhhh like 700 hundred and something lol. Be nice to know an exact number haha. lol
  • Sachen, at least part of them have to be counted IMO. I know at least 3 of them for sure were sold here in the states during the NES era. I saw them when I was younger in a crappy local video store for sure. Most people don't count them, but I do for sure.

Also, according to 1 of the 4 orignal founder of Active Enterprises he said that neither Action 52 or Cheetahmen were ever released at ALL. He said they went bust before either was released. I talked to him personally via email.

What it really boils down to is that there isn't a set #. Each person has to decide what they want, and what they consider to be enough. So set your own goal and don't worry about anyone else.

  • My number has always been 772. I believe that includes: Cheetahmen II, Panesians, all unlicensed games, no Sachens, Caltron, Myriad and Aladdins. Seems to be what most people collect. Don't get me started on variants.

Hm.......when I added everything together I only got 752. I must be either A) missing some company or B) leaving games out. I didn't count the Sachens either.

  • oh yea, duh, A.V.E (i think theres 18 or so) and the 3 AGCI games
  • Why does it always have to be such a debate when someone asks how many games there are?  Dain answered the question in the second post on this thread.
  • Simple. Some people count unlicensed games, some don't. Some count Sachens, some don't. Some count pirates, some don't. There is no real "official" count, simply because every collector has a different view of what a complete set should include.
  • *EXACTLY*

And guess what? The collection tool allows YOU to create your own collection and YOU get to be the judge of what constitutes a complete collection for YOU. Your "stats" are based on what you consider to be a complete collection, so if you only have 750 games in your collection, and you have everything for each of those, you'll have a "complete" collection image I know, sounds strange.
  • *COUGH*What Collection Tool*COUGH*

  • Don't worry Batty, it is coming. I talked to Dain for over an hour yesterday. He has come a long way and it sounds great. We hammered out a few ideas so wer are getting there. (but keep busting Dain's balls, cause it is heeeefreakinglarious)

I don't know, actually. When I completed my collection, I just counted the games that I had, and I had 772.

How's he going to get any work done when NGD has him thinking about balls again... I'll call the local pharmacy and see if they can deliver some prozac!

Because if there was no debate this discussion wouldn't be any fun image
  • What, I'm not the end all master combo chookster?!?

The great thing about this date -- which has gone on and on (and on) for years -- is that there is no correct answer. That's the *final* answer! (or not)
