King Neptune's Adventure Component Values

Does anyone know the values for the transistors, capacitors, etc. for King Neptune's Adventure by Color Dreams?  I purchased a copy a few months ago and it tested fine when it came in but is now completely unresponsive when I try to bring it up to check out further.  At this point I do most of my gaming on my Retron 5 since it's much easier to hook up and keep away from my 1 year old and haven't gotten a chance to put it through any of my actual NES systems for further testing.

However, when I pulled the cartridge apart to make sure everything looked ok, I noticed that the front, flat part of the transistors used on the board seem to have either been scrubbed off or are signs that those parts actively went bad and (maybe?) partially exploded.  No debris inside of the case, but the screw under the back label was exposed when I got the cartridge, so somebody has likely been inside before me.

I checked out the board against the reference images on BootGod's NES Cart Database and everything looks fine save those three transistors.  Unfortunately, the photo on the NES Cart DB site, while very clear, aren't quite good enough to show me what values are on those components.  I can test each transistor with my multimeter, but not knowing what the values are supposed to be has caused me to pause on that front.  Decoding the resistors is simple enough, and I should be able to pull values off of most everything else, but the scrubbed-up transistors vex me.

The only other two games which are supposed to use the same board, Moon Ranger & Challenge of the Dragon (UNK-COLORDREAMS-REVB), I don't have.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Meant to mention (but forgot before posting) that I don't have the equipment to test or reflash the ROM chips, so I'm focusing on the other components due to the seemingly obvious "damage" as well as that being all I'm equipped to do right now.

  • Lots of the silkscreened info on the components were removed to try to prevent bootlegs being made. Pretty standard on the unlicensed titles.
  • I'm at work at the moment, otherwise I'd break it out an post photos. I can understand their thinking, but their's a noticeable amount of material from the flat side of each transistor itself missing, so I have to wonder if whoever was scrubbing those parts got overzealous or if that's actually damaged. Hopefully somebody either has the values for those parts, knows where I could get them or has a cart they could pop open (without damaging a perfect label) to help me out. Thanks for the info regarding Color Dreams' practices!
  • The ones I have seen were really bad as well... looked like they used a grinding wheel on them.
  • Update: I finally got a chance to pull out a couple of my actual NES systems (and found my FC Mobile) and tested this cartridge out. Turns out that there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the cartridge, the Retron 5 just won't recognize it whatsoever. Plugging it into a front loader, top loader and Hyperkin FC Mobile produced immediate gameplay. I'm not sure what the issue is, as the Retron 5 is also produced by Hyperkin, but regardless it's now good to go. If/when I get around to it, I'll probably sit down with my multimeter and figure out what the values for all of the components are so as to be able to fix it up again should any of them go south. Similarly, for any Color Dreams/Bunch/Wisdom Tree games I own that already have the screw accessible in the back, I'll go ahead and do those at the same time. If/when I get this taken care of, I'll post the results here if anyone's interested. I'm honestly kind of surprised that a list of this sort doesn't already exist but am happy to help out in creating it so others (hopefully) won't have to scratch their heads and do a lot of research & testing to figure out how to fix their damaged/defective unlicensed carts.
  • Have you updated your retron 5? They might not have king neptune in their db, or not your particular version or something. If you are up to date, shoot them a message and let them know.
  • I updated it a few months back but haven't tried since. My little one went to bed fairly late last night, so I basically tested everything then packed it away (and out of reach of tiny hands) before turning in for the night. If I get a chance this evening I'll break out the Retron 5 again and see if there are any available updates and contact Hyperkin if the game's still "DOA." I've got a few games that come up as unknown no matter what and aren't listed in anyone's compiled database of working games, so I suppose I really should give them a heads up. I don't know that it will necessarily get all Retron 5 owners and update to add such missing games (like Road Rash 1, for instance), but it can't hurt to try.
