Necro bump

Should one make a new thread or necro bump?

I had to look "necro bump" on urban dictionary.

I see comments like "there's plenty of threads on this already" but then there's "nice necro bump btw" (this literally just happened to me).

I am confused.

Ok, so (lol) I used the old noggin a lil more. Did a bit more research on this and apparently I am supposed to link the old thread in the new thread. Correct?

I still don't get the problem with bumping an old thread with a relevant question.

  • This sounds like it needs a poll!

To Necro Bump or not to Necro Bump, that is the question...

I think you're looking into this too much, I don't think it really matters!

Wish me luck figuring out how to add the poll haha

    You might be right
  • I have never heard the term Necro Bump. Sounds like an STD you'de get from necrophilia...

Then I looked up the term on google.
  • We judge it on a case-by-case basis. Personally, I don't have a problem with it in general because a lot of the older topics are interesting and worth adding to. The main thing is to not have multiple active threads on the same topic, as that clutters the forum.

As for adding a link to a previous thread in a new thread, we tend to do that when we want to keep a topic going but need to lock the older thread because it has too many posts (around 5,000 or so), like the "show your collection" thread, for example.
  • I think the selling threads are the ones that upset the most. You know, the ones that a user last updated years ago...it is best to just PM the user as either they are typically no longer active or never updated the list and it is all sold. It has been few times I have gotten a hold of some items this way, but it is always worth a PM.
  • I made my intro here by lurking the same thread in the brewery for 2 years and finally necro bumping it a few days ago. Now I'm regretting that I didn't name my account NecroBump....

    Damn... oh well

    Here's what I've learned:

Starting a new thread that someone else has already started, bumping an old thread, and "necro-bumping" are all different things.

If you start a thread someone else has talked about (exact same topic) it usually gets pointed out and linked and then closed by a mod, i.e. you should have done your research.

If you bump an old thread and it's necessary, then that's fine.

But a "necro-bump" is when you bump the thread with information that wasn't previously available. I think that's the difference. Hard for that to happen too much with 30 year old games.

I think if you're making a new thread, as long as the topic is different, and it's fresh you shouldn't get hassled too much for it. Usually, if it's similar to other topics, people will let you know right away, haha...
  • I think it depends on

    (a) the age of the last thread on the subject

    and

    (b) the quality of the thread you'd be necrobumping

Just because a thread talked about the subject before, doesn't mean the discussion in the original thread was a quality that is worth carrying forward with the necrobump (and we've actually seen a few necrobumps that end up reliving old disputes in awkward ways)

So if the most recent threads are low quality or went off topic badly, make a new thread and state up front why you wanted a fresh discussion.

If the most recent thread is fairly fresh (within the last couple of months), and it didn't dissolve into distracted arguments, then revive it and carry on.

It's more art than science, unfortunately
  • Necro bumps are great. I enjoy reading through old posts of past members and hearing what new members have to add.

Why does a thread have to be locked when it hits 5k?

It doesn't *have* to be, but eventually new threads are started for the sake of efficiency (for example, I recall there being some glitches when trying to post in really long threads in the past). And when a new thread is started that continues a topic, the older one needs to be locked so that only the new one is active.
  • It's a drain on the server to keep the giant threads still active.
  • Except the Joel thread, there's an unspoken reason why it must continue...*gasp* I've said too much! ....Joel loves you!
  • I always thought nercrobumping was one of the cooler features of the internet. Discussions can be alive and useful for years.
  • I think it completely depends on the subject like others have said. Bumping old FS thread is really stupid, even when they are several months old. I always laugh when stuff gets necro bumped and like 10 people reply to the OP assuming the topic is new/fresh.

I'd rather see old posts get bumped than have multiple threads with the exact same topic.
  • I prefer to start a new thread with a link to the old on at the bottom. Necrobumping can be confusing when you have to read through 5 pages of outdated info. I consider forums to be like any reference material. Site your sources but keep relevant information at hand while allowing people to follow up on the history later.
  • Who's gonna be the first to necrobump this thread in a couple years?
  • Rule number 1 for internet fun - no matter what you do. People WILL bitch at you for it.
