Guide to buying/selling?

so I made a buying thread, and have recieved a few replies, just wondering what are the general guideliens people tend to follow here...?

so, if the guy is legitmate, or appears, do I have to pay first, then he ships out the games? im new here, so I assume this would have to be the case.

what kind of payments are usually done, paypal? we both live in canada, so I could actually do an email money transfer, but I'm not sure if this is reccomended...

thanks for any help

  • Paypal is usually recommended but not via gift payment. If buying, you pay first and then they ship. If trading, usually the lower feedback person ships first. Read the FAQ for more info.
  • For buying you pay first then the seller ships, pretty straight forward.

Trading usually the lower feedback person ships first, be weary of who you trade with, do a little digging to see if they're reliable and trustworthy, too many scams going on to be trusting right off the bat.
  • I would only e-mail money transfer if it is a person you know/trust because there is no protection for you as a buyer. Otherwise, Paypal non-gift payments are always recommended in case you get scammed then Paypal can re-imburse you.

The number next to everyone's username is the number of positive transactions with other members. You can click on that number to get more feedback detail. Checking your WTB thread, both guys who PM'ed you are well established and have excellent feedback.  Of course, I still recommend you pay with non-gift Paypal payment as another layer of protection.
  • I don't wanna be "that" guy but there are plenty of guides in the FAQ section. The basics are prices, photos, and never send gift payment on paypal unless they really are your friend or family. It protects everyone. If you are new, people may be wary if you are buying high dollar items, but everyone has to start somewhere. Typically the payment is sent and then games are sent. There is also a way to send transactions to other members so all the details can be worked out and be visible for both members. If you are trading, the person with lower feedback typically send their stuff first. Good luck and check that FAQ section.
  • Can.someone please describe to me the process in which I could open a dispute with PayPal for somethin .that wasn't ever sent out? What kind of proof.and.evidence is.required and.how.exActly does PayPal come to a conclusion to.refund money?

I'm asking because there's a guy on the fforums.here I want to trade with but the thing is his feedback is all two years or older so I don't feel fully comfortable sending him large amount that we agreed on for the two games. Now, I've been told by multiple people here including in this thread that PayPal offers protection for me as a buyer.of.I'm sendind the money as a good / services. Could I get an explanation how exactly I'm protected?

    Have you done any research?
  • I checked the site faq but.don't see anything that answers my questions.

Basically my concern is that since this guy has really old feedback, maybe he just doesn't care if he scams me and gets marked on the Hall of Shame here on the site. You know what I mean?
  • Yeah but it's not just that. Am I going to be able to get my money back?
  • Thanks for the link. So from what I gather I am protected but I'm just not sure if this website falls under the protection. Do transactions have to be conducted on a website like eBay with integrated PayPal or does not matter? Because from the looks of it this web site is completely unaffiliated with paypal so I don't know if I actually am protected. Could anyone clarify?
  • Any payment you make with paypal for "goods" comes with buyer protection. Goods are just about any tangible item. Services and possibly digital-only items don't qualify.

If the item you receive doesn't match the seller's description, or you just don't get it or whatever, there are options attached to your paypal transaction to resolve a problem. Following one of those will kick off a dispute process. They'll ask the seller to respond. If that doesn't work you can escalate and have paypal intervene directly and if they side with you (which they usually will) they will force a refund. You'll likely have to return whatever you received, possibly at your own expense.
  • Thank you very much for the response
