SNES Black screen issue

This week I was playing one of my snes games and in the middle of the game the screen went black but the audio continued. I figured the game was dirty so I cleaned it and the system. Next go round the same thing happened but sooner in the game. I decided the game may have a problem so I switched to other games and the same thing keeps happening on all of them. Even the game I played for hours last week will not play for more than 10 min. I checked for corrosion and bad caps but everything looks fine, I even took off the pin connector and cleaned it. I could not find any info on this problem by searching google. Anybody had the same issue? Any info on the problem or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Did you try switching the av cord or rf switch? Possibly the audio cord was working but video cord crapped out. Id replace the cord first and go from there seeing how you cleaned the pin connector and the games and weren't having any issues prior.
  • Try a different power cord. They can make a console work unreliably.
  • Usually a black or frozen screen and music still playing means the CPU has crashed.

...and it probably crashed as the result of a bad power supply.

Thats exactly what it does, the music still plays but gameplay is frozen because I cant hear any shooting or punching sounds after it goes black.

Would a new power supply fix that?

We won't know unless you try

  • AV wires My SNES has the same issue but if you mess with the Video cable it usually fixes itself.
  • I'm casting a vote towards the AV wires as well, I have a set here that had the video go out but sound still came though, probably should also mention this set was an off brand and not OEM.
  • To the two posters above:

No. He said that the music continues but the game is locked up. No further sound effects. You can't pause and hear a jingle, you can't press punch/fire and hear a grunt/shot.

Conclusion: It's NOT the AV cord.
  • Ordered a power supply, hopefully that does the trick when it gets here.
  • Sometimes it's a blown capacitor. You can buy them in bulk on ebay for a few bucks if you are so inclined to try to repair it yourself. I have managed to fix one, but a couple others it turned out to be something different. I hate that it's always the SNES's that get the A/V issues
