Gameboy Advance SP not turning on

I just pulled a gameboy advance sp out from storage today to give it a whirl. Trouble is it wont turn on, plugged into the ac adapter or not. Will this system work even if the battery is shot but still plugged into the wall? the red light briefly flashes on when plugged in but then quickly goes off. No lights when attempting to start the console...

    My understanding the battery has to be good even if you are using a AC adapter. I say this because when I fully discharge my GBA and let it sit for a few months, it will not power up with just AC power until the battery has charged for a least 3 minutes or so.

    If the light wont stay on the battery is dead, you will need to replace it before you can use the console.
