PS3 Slim Model - Disc Reading Issue

PS3 Slim model will not read discs unless tilted.

I know there has to be an actual fix for this.......I have taken it apart and cleaned the lense but it didn't do jack.

Has anyone else had this issue before? I can keep tilting it to play games no big deal but eventually it will probably just shit out.

It attempts to read the disc and spins then makes an ejecting noise about 3 times until it stops trying to read the disc.

Maybe I just didn't clean the lense well enough?

  • Usually a lens won't read a game if it's worn out. Over time, they all tend to just stop working, no matter how well you clean them. Kinda like a light bulb, there's gasses inside that dissipate over the years from normal use.

Not sure how tilting it works, but my guess is that the laser's not putting out the light to read and start the disc, so that's why it's not spinning. But the tilting it could possibly ease off the tension the drive, or moving the disc a bit and it's just barley catching?

You could also check and see if any cables are connected properly, or if there's any parts that may be stuck.
  • Tilting/turning upside down usually stalls the inevitable. Probably need to replace the laser. Plus side they are 15-20bucks on ebay, I replaced mine in my ps3 about a month ago. It started reading less and less discs, and freezing in them a lot. I ordered a whole laser carriage off ebay, but actually just swapped out the laser head part.

And if the laser does not work good enough to read it, it wont spin.

I was thinking of replacing the whole disc drive...I already took it apart and put it back together (and only was leftover with 2 screws haha!) It would literally take 10 minutes to get it done.....

Thing is they are like $60-$70.

  • I have had my PS2 since launch day and it started not reading disc unless I turned it upside down before it finally quit on me. It could be a number of things really. My lens wasn't bad in my ps2 but the tracks the lens moved back and forth on were worn a bit. It was preventing the lens from scanning the entire disc causing it to freeze mid game. Turning it upside down relieved the tension until it just gave out. Just replace the entire disc drive and have brand new everything in my opinion.

I will once it poops out on me probably, I am going to try and take it apart and see if I notice anything else screwy about it....the gears and mechanisms show no ware, broken parts etc...it is weird.

  • This sounds like a lens issue or a problem with the drive's mechanism itself. Last time I had problems similar to that was because of the lens where worn out and another PS3 wouldn't read discs because of a missing screw in the drive mechanism.
