He Shoots - He Scores! weekendroady's hockey collection pickups

Hey all - figured I'd start posting pickups and maildays for my hockey game collection. Been a bit behind on stuff so the first post will be a bit of a longer "update" and then I'll start adding as I get cool stuff. No, I wont be posting pics of NHL 2002 for PS2 here, only more unique stuff.

A couple sealed additions. Got the copy of Hitz from a great NA user. The NHL 2000 was a complete surprise. For $7 shipped I took a gamble on a stock photo listing on ebay that claimed it was a new game. I was certain I'd get a loose cart, but the gamble paid off!

Another great CIB find for less than $10 shipped!

NHL 08 Finland for PS2 and PS3

More games from Finland. For the uninitiated, EA has released the NHL game with various covers all over the world, with most variations coming from Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Czech Republic. I always love when I try to obtain these from a used game store overseas, I'm usually met with a "Why do you want these - they may not work on your console"-type bewilderment.

Swedish NHL 11 (sealed), German NHL 12

This one had been out of my grasp for years. Glad to finally have this tough Mega Drive game in the collection!

Forgot to add this one in my initial post. Really tough to find little gem for the Gizmondo. Not many PAL-only hockey games out there across all consoles, this is one of the few (rough count in my head, I think there are only four hockey games to exclusively release only in PAL regions, maybe 8-9 if you count those that had PAL/NTSJ releases... You're looking at two PAL-only exclusives in the last two images, the other ones are Elitserien 95 and Actua Ice Hockey 2 for PS1).

  • Quite the hockey game collection! How are you going to play the Xbox 360 ones, are they region free like the ps3?

I haven't tried quite yet - I've heard you can switch your country and your 360 just instantly becomes region-friendly for that country. The only problem is my 360 is hooked up via component cables, and I had issues with PS3 PAL games working via component, they only worked via HDMI. I'm anxious to try, I've heard that the Finnish/Swedish versions had foreign commentary in them, so that would be different.

  • Loving the pickups!

I'm trying to obtain a copy of NHL 15/16 from Switzerland, because Nino is on the cover.

I had been working on that as well. I signed up for the Swiss "ebay" ricardo.ch, but haven't tried any deal on there just yet. I tried to get an NHL 09 from Switzerland with no luck last time I tried with anything over there. I have had much more luck with Finnish/Swedish sites.

  • I love seeing who they put on the cover in each respective country. Very cool!
  • Looks like I'll have to bribe my Swiss friend to keep a lookout for a few of these.
  • Those Finnish copies with Teemu on the cover are awesome.  Go Ducks

I was hoping for a Duck on the US cover of NHL 07 or 08 as they won the 07 cup.  Nope, some crappy Capital on 07 and an even crappier Hurricane on the 08 cover.

Looks like Jonas Hiller on the German NHL 12 copy.

Guess the Europeans like the Ducks.

Crappy Capital you say? (see avatar)

In all seriousness I thought the 08 Staal cover is one of the weakest of the lot, but it doesn't top the ugliness of the NHL 2004 cover with Heatley (those Thrashers unis weren't pretty)

Got a few more treats in the mail yesterday. L-to-R: EU Nordic Variant NHL 2005 (PS2), Finnish NHL 10 (Xbox 360) and Swedish NHL 10 (Xbox 360)

Hahahaha, I didn't even notice your avatar.

This could definitely be the Capitals year.  Very strong team all around.
  • Speaking of the crappy capital again and my avatar ;-) I finally got a real copy a couple days ago after 6-7 years of on and off trying...

That's the Russian version of NHL 09 (sealed) wedged in the middle. Thanks to ebay opening its doors to Russian sellers, I decided to contact a couple of them to see if they could find me a copy. One couldn't, the other did - and three weeks later it arrived here. As a lifelong Caps fan, just really happy to finally have this. Its the only Russian cover variation I've seen, though apparently there may have been one for NHL 2001, but you'd have to dig through a lot of PS1 piracy to find it if it exists I suspect...

Oh yeah, always nice to add a sealed GB game and a loose cart of one of the Game Gear's rarest. Been a good week!
  • Nice finds, that sealed NHL 96 is nice.

I still play my Genesis NHL 96 from time to time.  Had to replace the battery though as it stopped saving.

Are you aware of any other Wild players on covers? I see NHL 10, who is that? Koivu?

Yep, Koivu is on NHL 10. if you check my WTB thread in my sig it has a fairly complete list of international covers afaik from all my research. Nino being on NHL 15/16 of course is the second Wild player.

Finally got a deal done on ricardo.ch, its a bit of a hassle to set up on there, they actually physically airmail you a confirmation code for your account once you register. Most sellers on there only take bank transfers too (you can use Western Union), but I was able to get Swiss copies of NHL 13-15 for PS3 so it was worth the hassle. Will probably take a month but I'll get one of the Nino's at least...(gf's a huge Wild fan too - born and raised in the Iron Range)

Love the Range. I'm from the exact opposite end though. Hockey is just starting to get it's foothold here, 100+ years after the fact.

Anyway, I'll check out your thread. I'd love to put together a collection of any Wild players/guys that spent time in MN to any degree.

Good luck with getting your stuff from Europe too.

  • Nice haul from this past Fri-Mon:

    Another CIB GB addition

PAL Actua Ice Hockey. Amazed this didn't get released in the States, with the official IIHF/Nagano Olympics license and all. As far as I know its the only game with an NHLPA license to not get a U.S. release (heck, maybe the only sports game with a North American league or player's association license in general not to get an N.A. release...craziness...). The multi-lingual manual is almost 200 pages long!

    NHL 07 PSP Swedish version

Some great Japanese stuff I got in one shipment for a great price. Never owned a Japanese GB game, and am surprised by how small the boxes are. Very nice and tidy. Then there is Ice Hockey for the Famicom Disk System. I have a Twin Fami on my "own one of these days"-list so I can actually play it. The NHL Hockey '94 is the only 16-bit officially released Japanese translation of the series - and I think probably for the series overall. I don't think it officially came with green tea, but the seller included it in there ;-)

  • Do you only collect hockey games? I'm curious to see what your whole collection looks like. Looks like there is a TON of hockey games I've never heard of

Yes, I play a bit of everything but ony collect hockey games. I have some ideas for niche sport collections, but haven't started on those yet. For me its a perfect sport to collect. A lot of people can enjoy hockey games without much of a learning curve, a lot of gamers (including myself) have fond childhood memories of various hockey titles for NES, Gen/SNES, N64, etc, even if they don't generally play sports games. The amount of hockey games released over time isn't too overwhelming and the costs are pretty low (sans for a few rare outliers and, of course, some CIBs).

I actually know of a couple hockey game collectors online who have more than I do right now, but they collect purely NTSC/North American stuff from what I've seen. A rough estimate is probably around 210-215 official console releases across all regions (and that counts multiplatform, so NHL 07 counts four different times). Counting PC and international variants, I probably have around 150 individual items right now. I got a bit of stuff still coming in the mail I'm but I will post a collection "family photo" soon. Living in an apt, I don't have it displayed nicely - waiting to build a hockey-themed game room when my gf and I find a house eventually. That's the dream, hah!

nice! I know mutant league hockey is a big one. Been looking into that one myself. Also want to grab all the other genesis hockey games CIB because they seem to be favourites. But I'm happy to stop at genesis, just a nice little subset to go for

Yes - that one regularly tops $100 CIB. Don't own a copy quite yet, but hope to within the year. The Genesis collection does make a great subset! Another tricky one of that era is the NES release of Pro Sport Hockey.

  • Go for a boxed Mutant League Hockey if you can get it reasonably. I have a manual for it.
  • I'm glad to see another hockey game enthusiast. While I don't necessarily actively collect them as you do, if I see one I don't have, I pick it up. The Genesis was a treasure trove of hockey games, from the aforementioned Mutant League to Hit the Ice. I have fond memories of several, including NHL 94...one of my favorite games as a youth.

As a devoted Genesis collector, I was fortunate that my girlfriend found me a copy of Mutant League Hockey a couple of years ago sans manual before the major price hike.

Thanks, I'll be on the lookout for one! It's tough to find a CB less than $70 nowadays, surprisingly it seems the cart itself holds a lot of the value! Can't wait to get it finally in the collection and complete the EA Genesis Hockey subset...

A couple nice packages in the mail yesterday...

A couple sharp CIBs - my first additions to the SNES run of EA titles. Was going to wait awhile until I started on the SNES EA stuff but couldn't beat the price on these...

NHL 10 Danish/Norwegian Mikkel Boedker variant - This is the only alternate cover ever released in Denmark and Norway, I think it was pretty limited as well (the North American cover was widely used there). A little bubble advertises the ability to "play with Mikkel Boedker", haven't seen that little quirk on any international covers yet...

  • I got a nice package from a game store in Sweden yesterday, filled with some goodies to tide y'all over the weekend

NHL 99, NHL 10, NHL 11. Going for a whole run of PS3 PAL cover variants at this point. NHL 99 isn't a variant, just tossed in for $1 (Though I think I do want to do a PAL PS1 run seeing as how I'll be chasing down the 2000/2001 variants)

CB Elitserien 95. Frustrated a little that it isn't CIB, but nice to finally have a copy of this one. Looks nice paired with '96

The Elitserien 2001 expansion for PC - Never thought I'd track this little curio down. Includes both Elitserien (Sweden) and SM-Liiga (Finland) leagues, there is a Finnish version called SM-Liiga 2001 as well, which I've also tracked down and am waiting for. You needed NHL 2001 installed to use these...(That's a young Henrik Zetterberg on the cover btw)

NHL Hitz 20-03 PS2 PAL Promo Only NFS. Found this dirt cheap from an ebay seller from the Netherlands. Figured why not...

Finally, back in the U.S.... Decent copy of NHL 98 CIB to complete the EA Genesis run (Yay!). NHL Hockey '95 for Game Boy may be the worst hockey game I've ever played but dang I need that box now! (PM me if you have it/eager to part with it)

Probably won't get anything new until later next week. Happy weekend!

I'm still missing '98 myself. I've only seen it a time or two, but they were asking 25ish bucks for it... I was not willing to do that. I'll find it eventually.

Yeah '98 for Genesis is probably the most difficult (and valuable) of the entire EA run on any console (outside of CIB Game Boy stuff). I've seen it for $10-15 (I paid $13). Eventually if you set a search on ebay your bound to stumble on somebody who thinks its just like any other common sports game and lists it as such.

  • Not a whole ton of good new stuff, but got these three in the mail yesterday:

Everything but the PS2. Three copies of the Finnish version of NHL 2003. Got these for $10 shipped from Finland, can't beat that. Yes, they are that ugly - too much white-on-white!

I thought I'd also upload a photo of my Genesis/MD EA Sports Hockey collection as it stands (just missing EA Hockey and EA Doubleheader for the Mega Drive - well, and Mutant League Hockey). Memories anyone?...

  • Happy to help if there's some euro versions you're after. There's a guy in the UK doing a similar thing with the FIFA games, it's insane how many versions of one game there is..

Nice! I'll send you a PM in a bit...

I wondered about a FIFA cover collection. There are some years where there are over a dozen variants of that cover worldwide... I'd love to see a photo of that collection. NHL is a far more manageable series in that respect.

  • Well today is my birthday - so I'll be partying all weekend (well, if paryting means heading to Portland for the Winterhawks game tomorrow...). Got one more package in the mail last night, been waiting for this to arrive for over a month (figured it was lost)...

PC NHL 2001 (Euro cover) and the SM-Liiga 2001 add-on. SM-Liiga 2001 is just Finland's version of Elitserien 2001, same game, different name. My set of EA's Swedish/Finland League releases is complete (Elit '95/'96 for MD and then Elit 2001/SM-Liiga 2001)

    Have a good weekend everyone!
  • Love this thread always awesome to see the new finds. What's your favorite hockey game on the SNES? I love me some NHL 94 & 96! Happy birthday!
