NintendoAge Pinewood Derby Thread

I have been building a couple cars for my nephew and daughter and got to thinking ....

" I wonder if anyone on NA is building pinewood cars for their kids ? "

When I finish the cars i will post some pics.

My older 2 daughters finished 2nd and 3rd place when they were in girl scouts

Last year my nephew finished 3rd and this year his car won his pack race undefeated in the heats and broke the track record taking first place, we are going to districts in a few weeks .

  • I used to do this a lot when I was a very young kid. My grandpa and I spent a lot of time on them.

I made one for my niece a couple years ago. Looked like a pile of pink crap, but she won. Beat all the boys. Engineer. Just sayin'.
  • That's pretty cool. My dad always talked about pine wood derby.

I never built one but I can appreciate the effort put into building one and beating a track record!!! How long had the record stood before you beat it?
  • I have been doing alot of research online and joined a pinewood derby forum, i am reusing the car from my older daughters race for my young girl next week. we repainted and i went and got the high speed axles and am doing all kind of prep to the wheels. hoping to race a really fast car, she has the girl scout race next week and i registered her car for the modified division at the boy scout district race.

her car is also a shiny pink

The kid we beat had the last 4 years records, we beat him by a car length all 4 times we raced head up. they didnt share the times or averages with us though and i didnt bother to ask.

We didnt build the traditional " fast car "  he wanted a tank so we built a tank. I doubt we will place in districts but if we do it will be icing on the cake

  • I did it when I was a kid.

I never won anything, but they sure were fun to build.
  • I did this in Cub Scouts as a kid.

That being said, my father was the Packmaster and did most of the more clever improvements to my cars. So even as a kid, I never attributed much personal pride to my wins (of which there were many)
  • Every year i help my nephew build his for cub scouts. Pretty fun.
  • Everybody knows the fun part is the 'destruction derby' after the race (crashing the cars into each other across the floor).
  • I used to do this every year when I was in boy scouts. Was always fun to play with the design to see how it changed the results.
  • I did this twice in cub scouts and got fuckin smoked both years. However, I had the best looking cars. I painted my second one black with a flame paint job, all the other kids loved my car.
  • Sweet! I used to do this in Cub Scouts as well in the 90's. I remember winning a medal one time. I always stuck with a super simple design that seemed to do the trick most years

Haha, I think that's how it always went. Not necessarily the packmaster, but whoever's parent put in the most effort.

    I always designed mine.

That might be why I never won.

  • In jr. High shop class we did a unit on CO2 wooden cars. (I don't know if it's the same thing).

We had 2 weeks to design and build cars that would race against each other.

We all started with the same wood block and at race time, each car was fitted with the same CO2 cartridges at the starting line.

I made an itty bitty car that I painted to look like a bee.

    Everybody busted my balls.

    Definitely showed them though...

At the start of the first race, we hooked our cars onto their lines and stood back and watched the hammer drop and fire them off.

i made my car so light that the force of the CO2 ripped the car from the guiding line, it went airborne and smashed into a bunch of pieces at the far end of the hallway.

Got disqualified for making"an airplane" instead of "a car."

    It was hilarious though.

Same here I always did it myself, (and lost to the kids who's Dads built theirs). My kids are not in Scouts, but recently they've expressed interest, so Pinewood Derby glory might be in my future.

It sure was fun though, I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Of course, I did have some help with the power tools, but all the designs and everything were my own. I came up with some cool stuff though.

  • So I am finding out that there are monthly leagues that adults ship their cars to race and watch online. not sure if there is prize money involved. there are guys doing amazing things with these cars

That's honestly not that surprising though.

Enthusiasts in any hobby come up with crazy stuff.

  • Quick update :

I ordered pro ultra lite wheels that arrived today and i had to repaint one side of the car because the clear coat bubbled up.

Have to get this thing put together this week, race is on saturday
  • Found this car someone made and thought i would share it here. Coincidence pac man is this weeks contest game

  • So here are the cars i have put together for the races the next couple weeks :

    The Pinewood Tank

    image

I built this car in one night with my nephew and we went undefeated at his pack race taking first place and breaking the track record

    The Pink Panther

My little daughter is racing this car on saturday. we repainted it and i added some high end wheels , axles and weights to it. Her older sister raced this car in 2007 and took home second place by a nose. I swear i saw our car cross the line first but the scoring device marked us second. giving this car a second chance. The local girl scout council is putting together a nice event. they are having a local radio station come host the race and  a local car dealer donated trophies so i am hoping to take home some sweet hardware.

Will post some updates after the weekend

  • The Car was fast and we took home first place in her age group. Check out the sweet trophy !!

  • I have my car entered to race against the boy scouts on Saturday. We will see how fast she really is
  • Beat the boys !!!

Thanks Santa,  Went out yesterday and bought a tabletop drill press so i can start working on a new car . My little girl has been really excited about these car races. we recycled her older sisters car and gave it a fresh coat of paint and she has been asking to make her own new car , so i guess i have a second hobby now

  • I made a pinewood derby car when I was younger.

Made it look like the General Lee... And it didn't offend anyone
