I'm assuming they're picking six from this list of fifteen:
Elite
Final Fantasy
GTA III
John Madden Football
Legend of Zelda
Minecraft
Nurburgring
Oregon Trail
Pokemon Red and Green
Sid Meier's Civilization
The Sims
Sonic the Hedgehog
Space Invaders
Street Fighter II
Tomb Raider

Nurburgring
The what what? I had to look this one up. I remember there was a "game before night driver" but never remembered what it was called.
.. As for the actual winners, I'm certain it will consist mostly of games I do not enjoy or care about, but are deserving of induction based on the criteria.
Final Fantasy
Legend of Zelda
Street Fighter II
Oregon Trail
Sonic the Hedgehog
GTA III
Honorable mention to Madden.
Legend Of Zelda
GTA III
All games that had major cultural influence that helped to establish video gaming as a mainstream hobby.
Madden and Pokémon are also up there, but I'm not so sure the specific games are what stood out, as much as the franchise.
The rest of the field are great games, but to me excelled more within their genres respectively.
Is no Pokemon game in yet? If not, that's crazy and it should definitely get in this year.
There's only 6 games in it already. Doom, Pac-man, Pong, Super MArio Bros, Tetris, and World of Warcraft.
My list matches Jones, except my honorable would be pokemon

Whoops. Ok those are some pretty good first round picks. The only one I might exclude would be Doom, but that's just cause I haven't played it. Out of this year's list though, I think Pokemon should definitely be in.
Street Fighter II
Sonic The Hedgehog
Final Fantasy
Street Fighter II helped to revitalize the arcade scene, and was a huge success when ported over to console
Sonic led the charge of the Sega Genesis' push to dethrone Nintendo as the King of the console market. Sonic and the Genesis let fans know the console war had begun
Final Fantasy helped turn based rpgs become popular outside of the pc. Nintendo games of the era tended not to be nearly as time consuming and vast in scope. Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior/Quest, raised the bar for what gamers could/should expect on a home console.
Honorable mentions to Civilization for being somewhat of a pioneer in its genre, and The Sims. Anyone who was into PC gaming around the turn of the Millennium, will remember how big of a phenomenon the Sims franchise was(as well as Rollercoaster Tycoon/Tycoon Series.
That's my take on the 2016 field
- Pokemon Red and Green
- Minecraft
- Legend of Zelda
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Final Fantasy
- John Madden Football
With honorable mentions to the Sims and Street Fighter II. Each of those six games have changed the gaming landscape in each region they were released in, and remain popular to this day. There are also plenty of knock-offs and impersonators for each of those franchises, which is a testament to how important they are. These three games seem like locks:
Legend of Zelda
Space Invaders
Street Fighter II
Guess I'd take these as the final three:
Civilization
Final Fantasy
Tomb Raider
Really, Dragon Quest should be there instead of Final Fantasy. Pokemon has no business getting in before either of those.
Final Fantasy
Legend of Zelda
Oregon Trail
Civilization
Space Invaders
Street Fighter II
I think it should be:
- Pokemon Red and Green
- Minecraft
- Legend of Zelda
- Sonic the Hedgehog

The amount of media attention that came after this game was released was incredible. Grand Theft Auto also made major strides in helping games to be accepted as works of art that shouldn't be censored. Imho

I personally am not a fan of the GTA franchie, but I think your point is 100% correct. I'll also say that GTA III did open world very well, and that franchise always has pushed the limits of that genre. It's certainly a franchise that deserves a place in the hall of fame.
Pokémon is getting in 110% the cultural impact is unquestionable.
The game helped spread anime across NA to the mainstream but people tend to forget that part, was pokemon the first anime to hit america? hell no but it was that one that set the western world on fire and dbz.

yeah and not to mention it is in the top 3 successful video video game franchises of all time with more units sold only second to Mario. It should get it...I would be very surprised if it doesn't.

Pokemon the movie box-office sales record of five million opening week was not beat till the latest DBZ that just hit theaters a year ago. I wish i had the stats on how many gameboys were sold during that era but the new gameboy pocket came out around the same time. I really like some of these picks they did during this batch, i wonder how long till NWC ends up being voted on.
Am I the only one who thinks Minecraft shouldn't be in among these titles
Even though it's a newer franchise in comparison to the others, it's a huge deal and has had a lot of impact on the gameplay elements included in a number of newer titles and indie games. You don't necessarily need longevity to have a great impact, just look at Bo Jackson or the last two years Stephen Curry has had.
I feel like half the time they are adding classics and pioneers that truly deserve to be there, and the other half of the time they are adding fads just because they were/are popular.

Well, that's how most hall of fames work. It's "Hall of Fame," not "Hall of Greatness."
Minecraft...really? And they have The Sims but no Sim City? GTFO with this BS, this "hall of fame" has no credibility whatsoever.
Finally, someone else agrees with me on this. If SimCity didn't get the entire Sim franchise going, The Sims wouldn't even exist.

Yea, but you also have the "raid on bungeling bay" that you needed for sim city, yet it by itself wasn't too impressive. And sims were just a rehash of david cranes "Little Computer People".
Rather than just list games, they also need to list WHY; they kind of do on the page but not to any real degree. Is the Sims nominated for being the best-selling pc game franchise ever? Or for the open-endedness?
