Mother to Earth - Documentary about Mother/Earthbound Beginnings

If you hadn't noticed, over the past couple years I've been a proponent of getting out there and being involved in the gaming community. There's a lot of neat stuff I've been able to do, and a lot of it has to do with me joining NA. This kickstarter project is just the latest in a line of cool things I've been able to be a part of because of this forum.

Last year at MAGFest, I was approaced by a couple of hardcore Earthbound fans who said they had an idea for a movie. They had spent the previous year tracking down all the owners of the Mother prototype carts for the North American release, finding the original script writer for the English translation, as well as the guy who helped make the leaked version playable for all of us on the internet, and they were ready to make a movie.

But they hadn't done that before. That's where I came in.

I've spent the last year coming up with a budget for the project, lining up the equipment needed, and getting quotes for all the stuff we wanted to do. I mean honestly, what's an Earthbound project without Pogs and an Air Freshener? And yes, to help prepare for this journey I played through Earthbound Beginnings. Extra special thanks to Uncle Tusk, whose CIB copy came off the shelf for research purposes.

So here we are, the Kickstarter went live this morning. If I'm not mistaken, just in time for the tenth anniversary of the Mother 3 release which I believe is tomorrow. I'm excited, not just to be a part of the project, but to have helped Evan and Josh (the hardcore fans who put this all together) make their dream get a little closer to reality, and to launch my first Kickstarter project. And you've followed my shenanigans here on NA, you'll appreciate the irony of all of this.

This is going to be one interesting story, dealing with the leaking of the games from NoA and having several former Nintendo employees contributing to the narrative. Check out the kickstarter video below and then go pledge!

I second this. It's so great that there are two amazing documentries being made by members of this community right now!

  • Looks good! Ferris, I had no idea you were the guy behind 16-bit Gems Love your YouTube channel and wish you made more YouTube content.
  • Glad to see more awesome documentaries coming to light and glad to be a backer! Game on!
  • Saw this over on Facebook. Really excited about it!
  • We really want to make the best Kickstarter possible and we, obviously, love NA. I am wondering if you guys might have any tips or ideas. We have some more add-ons and tiers in the pipes and of course stretch goals, what are some things you guys really want to see in and from a big Mother/Earthbound Kickstarter?
  • This sounds awesome! I'm setting a reminder on Kickstarter for myself so I don't forget to back it!
  • So far, good start. Let's keep the ball rolling!

  • One week down and a third of the way there. Not bad!

  • Chugging along!

  • Love those pictures dude!
  • Y'all seem to be doing really well! I've seen this project mentioned on a couple of websites I frequent. Keep up the good work! I can't wait till this gets funded!
  • We're in the final stretch and not too far off from making it!

Just saw a cool article that Evan, aka Stevesesy on here, did with OperationRainfall. Good stuff!
  • I can attest to the fact that people have been tracking me down for the last few years asking what happened to the proto I bought from Jollerancher long ago (which I sold on ebay and then turned around and bought Stadium Events). I had known copy 2, Jollerancher then found copy 3, as far as I can tell. This is the first I've heard of this documentary, though. Good luck, guys.
  • Jollerancher there's a name from the past...

  • Glad I wandered into this forum tonight.  I'm in!  Can't wait to see it!
  • Only a day left! I know we can make it happen!

This is such a cool story and I want the whole world to be able to see it! I mean how cool is a documentary about an old official NES translation and prototype carts? Please back this and share it!

I actually talked with him by phone for nearly an hour back in the day. Funny how forgotten he is given the treasure trove of stuff he came up with. I would hope that he is involved in this documentary because he knows more about the origins of some of these protos than anyone else.

  • We actually got in contact with him through his eBay and spoke to him a bit then he dropped off. Once this KS wraps up, we are going to find him again.

Sometimes, I really love having an extensive knowledge of court record searches. Lol.
  • Congratulations on getting funded!
