Babbage's Summer 1991 Catalog

I recently came across this catalog in a box that was in storage. I either forgot about it or never saw it before, but either way I thought it was awesome and wanted to share with others who might appreciate it as well. Some of those prices are either amazing or terrible by today's standards of what things are worth now!

  • Very cool! Looks like my childhood Babbages wasn't even open yet at that time. I love seeing stuff like this.

EDIT: also, had that Borland Turbo Pascal. That was the first language I learned in school.
  • That is sweet! I love seeing old catalogs like this!
  • If we could all only go back in time and buy a Turbo Grafx.... or Ninja Golf for Atari 7800.
  • I immediately looked for the Neo Geo listing.
  • This is exactly what I remember those catalogs looking like. Thank you for sharing this!
  • Bringing back those memories
  • Awesome! Scan this and send it to retromags. This stuff is always fun to look through.
  • Yes thanks for sharing!
  • I like that much more than I expected to. If Retro Magazine wasn't so far in the hole and embarrassed right now they should send out a retro catalog.

Actually I've automotive companies make retro style catalogs with new items and unfortunately new prices. It certainly gets attention.

I have a picture of the Holyoke Mass location that was my main Babbages in my "Stores That Don't Exist Anymore" thread. It looks like the Staten Island, NY location that I also have pictured didn't exist yet.
  • Huh. There was a Babbage's in the Palm Beach Mall. I wonder if that storefront ultimately became the Gamestop I worked at?
  • Love looking through this kind of stuff and this era Sears Catalog.

    Thanks!

I can definitely say the Holyoke Babbages was not where the Holyoke Gamestop is despite that it is the same mall (Babbages was a ground store floor, Gamestop is on the 2nd floor) ....I imagine this is probably the case with a lot of them actually, where Gamestop looked to move into bigger shops than the old Babbages with the staggered shelving

    Holyoke Mall Babbages in 1990's.

I'll never forget the first time I went there to discover it was gone after years of shopping here.

    Holyoke Mall Gamestop in 2000s

I remember this part of Target used to be Nobody Beats the Wiz when I was familiar with this mall. No idea what the Gamestop used to be.

In reality the Food Court of Holyoke Mall looks like the ground floor, but is underground.

Where the Sports Authority is now is where Service Merchandise used to be and where AC Moore was in the early 00s.

If this picture below had shown the next floor up you'd have been able to see what used to be where the Gamestop now is.

Despite this mall being opened in 1979 pictures from the 80's and 90's are almost nonexistant.

In 2014 they remodeled the store and now I guess it looks like this

  • This is the Babbages I went to in the Holyoke mall.   That's awesome seeing that picture
  • Oh wow. Thanks for that. I love this sorta stuff. What a nostalgia trip.
  • I have a CIB GEN Romance of the Three Kingdoms II that still has the original Babbage's receipt. The game cost around $75 then (approximately $487,359.37 in 2016 dollars).
  • This appears to be a so-cal thing. Was this owned by the same company as Electronics Boutique? We didn't have Babbages in northern California (from what I remember)

The Pleasanton and Concord locations were near the Bay. The rest were either in the San Fernando Valley near me or in Orange County.

From what I can tell online, Babbage's was acquired by Barnes and Noble, and was lumped under the Funco division. Then they (Funco) rebranded as GameStop, and later bought EB (Electronic Boutique.)

For what ever reason I passed over those.  I guess to me it felt like there were 5+ Electronics Boutiques just on the peninsula, and they were the only video game stores around.
