Arya did have the best battle scenes. I didn't like the ending where she just walks past an army of white walkers undetected. Jon Snow was robbed of a poetic ending. The Night King wasn't even on Arya's list. Lol.
The view of flames rising up from the swords and trenches like a wave was spectacular. The flames all going out one by one was creepy but the whole calvary battle scene was unjustified unless they didn't know what they were up against.
You don't leave a fortified position to lead a battle against superior forces with a suicide charge of unsupported troops. Keep the calvary in support. You know that point in the battle when you are falling back and you blow the horn or wave the flag and "send in the calvary" reinforcements.
A few times we would see heroes suffocating in undead only to pan away or pan out to again see them with room to move. You can do it but we need to see how it happened.
The crypts are overrun. No one of any importance dies there. Here we have a chance to throw in a few dramatic scenes in the light where we can actually see some of action but instead we focus on Sansa and Tyrion holding hands telling each other love poems. There should have been a final stand by someone or an outright slaughter and either way we should have seen it.
Where are they going with the Sansa Tyrion thing anyway? Perhaps they do have plans for her I was thinking she was expendable and would die soon before tonight.
Lady Mormont's battle with the giant was ok. It falls short if you were compare it with say Frodo's cave troll battle in the mines of Moria. Now that was a great battle scene.
Jon Snow was caught by the dead with nowhere to move. Then we pan in and he has plenty of room to fight. Then the dragon swoops in killing everyone on all sides except him. If that is the storyline fine but poor execution. It comes off as unbelievable. We see the same thing elsewhere with others.
I’d have to put Arya at the very top of the list of killers and the dash towards the knight king kinda told me that only he had the awareness to stop a death kill from Arya mid attack to be outbested.
Also you are spot on with the hero’s getting overrun then the next shot they are regrouping showing how awesome they are while there’s a never ending hoard of dead
I agree with most all of this, good comments for sure. Arya somehow came Ninja-Flying in though, not walking . Also to be fair, they didn't even flench when Theon charged the NK.
Fully agree it was not smart to send the Dothraki into the darkness blindly, was not a fan of that and now they are gone .
It was weird assuming several folks died many times just to find them later be okay - Jaime particularly, Brienne, Grey Worm, etc. I trust that for the notable characters they will make it clear when they die (kinda like Ed or Theon).
I also wonder what is going on with Sansa/Tyrion, some fear that Tyrion will turn on Dany and everyone in favor of Cersei (I doubt it). Very much liked their convo through, although a little more notable kills in the crypt would have better (I swore Varys was a goner, Melisandre said he will die on that continent a while back).
I loved the Giant scene! Great acting/CGI, I most liked how when she jammed the blade into the eye how she let go and went limp like it was all she had to give. Well done. Not familiar with Frodo's cave battle - is that Lord of the Rings stuff?
It is weird with Jon all throughout the episode avoiding fire...enough with that already we know he is a Targaryen. I also wonder how they so perfectly target the dragon flame!
Listening to some podcasts at work and rumors are that Dany might get more villaneous as the show completes. If she is pregnant, remember she took a pretty big tumble off the Dragon last night...
I cannot wait to see how shit goes down in King's Landing, I assume Cersei has some wildfire on hand. We must see some faceless action in season 8. I believe that will occur with either the death of the Mountain, or Cersei (assuming either by Hound or Jaime respectively).

If Jon was immune then he would have walked out naked as the Queen of dragons once did. Not that we need to see Jon’s junk but that would have been a great scene as she would have instantly known he was not wrong about being a Targaryen. The old show would do reveals in that way. Those days are over.
Of course if we did that then the scenes where he bravely dodges blue fire to protect an empty icourtyard would have been even less meaningful than they were.
What is the blue dragon fire Anyway? Is that like a GI Joe vs Cobra thing where every team gets a color so we can tell them apart or does blue dragon fire have different properties than “normal” dragon fire.
There's a new fan theory going around that Bran Stark is the Lord of Light?
It plays into the whole "A Song of Ice & Fire" thing, with the Lord Of Light / Three Eyes Raven / Bran representing the fire, and the Night King representing the Ice. Since the Night King has tried to kill the Three-Eyed Raven since the beginning it might not be a stretch to say it's true.
I kinda like that theory, but...I think the the Lord of Light has played his part in the show with the death of Melisandre.
I have watched and enjoyed the show since the first season. I've also read all of the books.
Hated that Jorah died, but he went out the best way he could, and Theon came as close to redemption as his character could.
Only quibble is that there is NO WAY Sam Tarly should have survived. He's getting swarmed, and shouts to Jon for help, Jon (smartly) ignored him to pursue the greater threat as Sam is engulfed... and he lived? What the hell man.
Great episode but really no surprises. Pretty much all of the main characters survived. Would have liked to see at least one major player bite it. Jorah almost counts but a fairly predictable end while protecting Daenerys. Course we still have the King's Landing battle...
Watched it yesterday and as many said I didn't expect that many people to survive. I knew John, dragon queen, Lanisters will definitely survive but the rest eh. The Nigh King death well I expected some kind of a battle, then they lure him somewhere and kind of with a collective effort bring him down. I still think there will be something about Night King later in the show some backstory or something to be mentioned.

Another thing I don’t understand is the original trap plan.
They had said that they would Bran as bait but what was the trap? Surely not Theon and a few others with their arrows?
Had Ayra not flown in from across the battlefield undetected there was nothing there.
Did they not think this part of the plan out or am I missing something?

So, as I said i expected them to make a collective effort to lure Night Kind and kill him all together. There is a part when Drakais or whatever the names of those crazy riders on horses with bent swords. When they first charged with flamed swords and died the Danerie rushed to jump on the dragon and John grab her by the hand to stop her like "hey we had a plan and have to stick with it" but she didn't listen and then John hoped on the other dragon and flew after her and well the whole plan to trap Night Kind went to drain. This is not my theory its writers explaining it after the episode 3. I am not sure if it was showed on HBO but i watch it profesionally dubed version in Russian on Monday (for free lol).

Dragon fire. Dragon plan failed.
From watching the episode, Bran saw what was going to happen and didnt inform anyone because it might alter the future. He knew arya was going to take him down, but he cant change events or it might screw it up.
Dany took off and went into the storm. They were supposed to wait for the night king to reveal himself and go to the godswood. The plan was to try and burn him with dragon fire.

Pretty clear how it failed. It all went to shit.
I thought he couldn't be burned by the dragon fire?

They learned that later. We are talking about the plan from the beginning. Stick with us.
It's like someone took all my thoughts and wrote em down. Totally agree.

I actually forgot that Dany just sat there and let the zombies board her dragon like it was a 747.
Still haven’t rewatched it yet but I’ve read that the episode is much, MUCH better if you turn the brightness up on your tv...I have a projector so there’s only so far I can go.
the same website that gave dk tropical freeze a 6/10 on wii u, and didnt even mention the soundtrack.
I wouldnt want to admit to having any opinion thats the same as them haha.
You do know how editorial sites work, right?
yes. not a fan of gamespot. That was a lighthearted joke just to remind everyone they gave dkc tropical freeze(arguably the second best DKC game ever made) a freaking 6

How dare you bring lightheartedness into this serious discussion about fictional characters. The audacity!

The show is often dark, so I always watch it with the lights off. I didnt have a problem seeing the episode like some did.

I watch it with the lights off as well, my main issue was watching it live on Crave. The quality was pretty garbage overall and that certainly didn't paint a good picture for me. I had no idea at all who was on screen for a good 20% or so of the episode.

Sick burn! Kinda like how "NintendoAge" says every professional player who plays in the state of Texas is the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be! You know, cuz one guy is always saying that.

Yep this explains it pretty well HBO did cover how she felt obligated to fight for her Dothraki and break the plan. The other components of Jon/Dany flying away was that Davos was supposed to signal to I believe Dany when she should come light the trenches, which obviously didn't work because she got lost in the Night King Winter storm which was unplanned. Thankfully Melisandre was there to walk slower than a Walking Dead zombie up to the trenches to do her voodoo (I think she knew exactly how much time she had).
The piece with Bran was to lure the Night King out away from the war a bit and then I assumed they were going to have a group ready to go after him, likely including Jon. I don't think they planned on shooting him with dragon fire as it would have likely harmed Bran/Theon/whomever, and also Bran claimed he didn't know whether dragon fire would kill the NK in the prior episode (although he lied to keep the event flowing).
I too watch with the lights off and while it was dark, it was fine for me.

good article. I was shocked to see the bright sun and clean lines of kings landing in the previews for next week- I legitimately thought the show was over and then remembered the general slog of palace intrigue and in-fighting.
With regards to the next 3 eps- I feel like I ate a full meal and then stepped into another room to eat another meal but from Burger King.

I will watch this episode again but after one view here are a few thoughts I had.
Yea i also thought sending the dothraki into darkness was just an all out ignorant move. In the defense of John and being burned.. Not all Targaryens are immune. Viserys for instance was not, and if some big ass dragon is spitting fire at me, im running.

How did they fail?

I wouldnt want to admit to having any opinion thats the same as them haha.
the same website that gave dk tropical freeze a 6/10 on wii u, and didnt even mention the soundtrack.

Let us hope that the next battle happens during the day !
