I think that’s whats behind our different takes. We are all heavily invested in the show. Those of us viewing this season more negatively are doing so because we were invested and are disappointed. Those who like this season like it because they are so invested that they feel that have to like it.
^ I agree, I still enjoyed it - like couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Just expected so much more from some characters...like where has Arya's faces been, if she doesn't use somebody's face in the last episode I will be genuinely disappointed as they put a lot of focus on that in the earlier seasons (and even last, Sansa knows about them too). This is one example of the many holes that might not be filled with 80 minutes left.

I think if anyone feels like they are invested in GOT they should read the books and get the non hbo a song of ice and fire

Of course by reading the books you lock yourself into never getting any ending at all, so...
I can be a picky person when it comes to movies and I have never complained about GOT until this season. Before this season, I was comparing it to Deadwood, Westworld, Luck, and the Wire for HBO's best work and easily being one of the best television shows of all time. No matter what, this has been a great series, but a screwed up ending will drop its standing among the greats.
Eh, what says all I need to know about the series is I don't even care anymore. Total apathy has set in. Before I was completely engrossed in the story, I read up on the lore, had a great time talking fan theories. Now I just want it to be over, blah.

This.
Which is kinda nice to not be invested and it gives me an excuse to use the whole "I'm not mad, i'm just disappointed" line a lot.

I read the books and got invested in the better storyline and have been disappointed so that is way I just realized I’m not butthurt like the majority. HBO just did a great job early on with the exact source material so it made sense.

That translates to me, that they didnt do my favorite fan theories so im going to be a downer about it.

That's what you'd like it to translate to, not what it actually translates to.

Oh quest, you're just generically defending the show at this point. What "fan theories" are people bothered by that aren't largely emphasized and then completely skipped/overlooked/brushed over in the show? Again I really enjoyed last night's episode, but from a storyline continuance standpoint, it was pretty weak sauce.
Just hopped onto the site for the first time in a while. Wanted to see what was new. Saw this thread and just knew before opening that quest would be defending this pile of trash.

I’m glad that you still like this show. No one here is trying to change your mind and they all respect your personal opinion. If anything I wish I still enjoyed it as much as I once did.
This is the only tv show I watch besides say NFL games.
There is no hidden agenda here. Many are honestly disappointed in the show this year.
Lol you can call it defending if defending is saying that people word choice, " pile of trash", "disaster" "horseshit" werent all just hyperbole nonsense.
Everything has to be escalated to worst thing ever language. Then you have people saying those words then later saying they liked the episode and or were entertained. Well then obviously your language was hyperbole then. I just really cant stand overreaction.

This show is not the worst ever.
It does however in my opinion fall short of the expectations it set for itself from the early seasons.
You may still enjoy it and I’m glad that you do but it is not the same show that got me hooked.
This was the on-scene transition, marking the end of a massive story vehicle in GOT to the secondary mechanism- OR - why I feel the last season is kinda clumsy (pacing, subilty).
I believe we had 2 different shows smashed into one:
1. palace intrigue - the quest to sit on the IT and all of the behind the scenes maneuvering, backstabbing, poisoning, ambushing, posturing, etc. associated with "palace intrigue" stories. For seven seasons we sat and literally watched multiple people writing notes for ravens, common folk beg kings and queens in power to see their view, saw the struggles of the various Hands, the weight of wearing the crown (see robert's sad life after the revolution), the sacrifice (stannis' father of the year move). THIS TOOK SO MUCH FUCKING TIME. And... that's ok. Sure, gratuitous sex and death, but that's what we signed up for: to watch characters struggle to control the seven kingdoms in a brutal and maybe magical word. Remember? There's magic? Or did you forget on very allegorious (or symbolic?) moment when Varys' tells the story of his de-manning and how long it took to capture a fucking wizard which he now has in a box. HE LITERALLY CAPTURED THE MAGIC ASPECT OF THE SHOW, BOUND IT, AND HID IT AWAY.
All that to be said, occasionally, very rarely did we see a second story...
2. hard fantasy - Oh yes, fantasy! Dragons are born, then stolen, then pretty much every Dany plot resolving with dracarys. OHHHHHHHH shit, we eventually find out about the NK and his white walker army who are very, I mean VERY slowly, marching south (we've seen characters whisk around westeros pretty fast but them walkers take seven seasons to get to the Wall). So that's fun, right? Learning the lore, the rules of the NK and his walkers as we watch the dragons grow. Hard fantasy, that's why we tuned in, it's like a Frank Miller did a gritty serialized Conan. Very cool.
My point? Oh, do shut up. Part I of the last season (season 7 by HBO reckoning) is both of these storytelling mechanics actually lining up and the roster for plot on both sides is looking thin- there's barely anyone left for palace intrigue (Cersei won) and the walkers and dragons are almost face to face. Part II of the last season (this season named season 8) now resolves those two stories but I think Varys' death (much like the solving of his pesky wizard problem) is indicitive of the mismanagement of the weight of the two stories. They show, on screen, one story (hard fantasy) destroying the other story (palace intrigue) as Drogon roasts everything but Varys' nuts (see what I did there? oh, shut up). There's one episode left so it's not devistating, but it's interesting to see the ending weight seems to be on fantasy, even though for most of the eighty something episodes we've watched mostly palace intrigue (do i have numbers to back this up? No. you do that, I'm on a roll).
Remember how much god damn time in story mechanism 1 - palace intrigue? Remember what a dick Joffrey was? Ugh, we dicked around with some relgious stuff for a season? The battle of the bastards? Little Finger? Watching the Hound move a few Stark girls around? Remember when there were a whole bunch of people who raised their hands as the rightful King of Westeros? No. Because Night King and dragons. Because Jon spent a shitton of time telling us how dangerous the threat was (not directly of course, but by us telling everyone he knew). Now the scales tip to fantasy (which is a cool part of pop culture) but I still wonder why feed us so much of show 1? Stop and think of all that time over there (Essos) levying the Dothraki, breaking chains, unsullying the unsully, etc. and can we say all that time was worth it if the allies that joined Dany of these adventures are quickly wiped out by the NK? And all that palace intrigue, the snarky remarks, the walking around in robes and plotting, has any weight knowing that the real threat was the NK and that Dany would just fuck everyone up with dragons (even though she said she didn't come all this way to be the queen of the ashes)?
Speaking of weight, I think in this modern time of entertainment it's almost weighted towards a multiplatformed experience; the theories, the reddit (and I guess here) rants on lore and deep cuts from the book or wiki that most of us HBO people don't care about. The tweets, the spoilers, all of it float above the source material and have so much weight, yet the original content is the corner stone to the experience. I think BA nailed what most of us did with this series "I read up on the lore, had a great time talking fan theories" but, yeah, it's seemingly impossible to get a perfectly satisfying ending. And so... Dracarys!
TLDNR: In the second to last episode we literally see the fantasy aspect of GOT roast the epitome of what was a vast plot vehicle of the series: palace intrigue. I'm sorta annoyed but still keep my witty charm.
Eh, what says all I need to know about the series is I don't even care anymore. Total apathy has set in. Before I was completely engrossed in the story, I read up on the lore, had a great time talking fan theories. Now I just want it to be over, blah.
i 100% agree.
the final episode of seinfeld i cried. the montage episode recapping the best scenes from the series all while green day's 'good riddance' played got to me. and it got to me hard. and i was only in 8th grade. that's how much seinfeld meant to me.
the final epsiode of LOST i cried. yeah, the finale of the series may not have been what i was expecting, but the writers did such of a good job of making me care for the characters AND the series as a whole that it was emotionally hard for me to see the series end.
and apathy is what i feel now towards GOT. if i would never see and learn of the conclusion of the series, i honestly wouldn't care. the writers did such a poor job over the last 2 seasons that seeing the series conclude will have zero impact on me emotionally.
the writers/creators for seasons 7 and 8 ought to be ashamed of themselves for absolutey destorying a great story.
Well what can i say? Night King would've been a better king after all...
I spoke to many people from different cultural backround at lunch at my job about GOT and all agreed that season 8 is a big let down, too rushed, no emotional build up at all.
So, few questions:
When everyone were screaming "ring the bell!", Dany didn't want them to ring it i guess but despite the outcome couldn't hold the anger against all people that betrayed her including John, so that is why she burned everyone there?
So, what about everyone up in the north? Are they coming with an army to fight Dany now?
Like there is so much rushed, not explained, not paced right that I can't wrap my mind how they all gonna cramp it into the last episode....ahhh I guess I have Westworld series left for me.
The latest season of American Gods on Amazon Prime was really good though.
Yikes, I hate to pop in and just flat disagree with something that isn't even on topic, but man, I couldn't disagree more with that assessment (so much so that I popped in to do so, would love to hear what you liked so much about it via PM).
Topic at hand, I don't think this season has been that great. I'm going to watch the last episode Sunday night, I'm invested, have been since the first season, also have read all the books. Curious to see what they've come up with for an ending.

Agreed, but they aren't finished yet so that's not even a practical option. Anyways. I’ve said what I had to say.
yes , and very hyperbolicly

Sure it's going to be delicious, enjoyable, and maybe, just maybe even better in some way. But it ain't what you ordered.
