What constitutes a complete set?

Let's say I set out to collect all NES games or all SNES games. Is a "complete set" what you make of it?
For example you can collect only licensed NES games and forget all the Panesian/Color Dreams/Tengen stuff. Is it still complete or do you have to have every single game that was made to play on the NES?

Comments

  • every person you ask has a different idea on what they consider I complete set.

Do you count the new Homebrew stuff? What about sachen games? Licensed? Unlicensed? No one can answer that but you.. Some of the guys on here who've got everything that was released in North America for the NES, still find new things to track down.. PAL carts in one person's case, Famicom carts in anothers.

  • Your imagination image
  • Whatever you want it to be. It is your collection no right or wrong way to do it.
  • mega man 1-6 could be a complete nes set to some folks out there! you wont read me say this often, but thelosteyeball is correct in this case! image
  • wow, i was just thinking about this earlier today at work... strange.

does anyone have the official Nintendo NES game list? with only the licensed ones? It use to be up on the Nintendo site, but I can't find it anymore.
  • Pretty much In my book its all the games that were sold in a public venue. meaning I could walk into a store and buy the game. that said its different for everyone. some even count label varations
  • The list that defines a complete set to me is 766 games long. It counts several different games under the same title (namely the 6-in-1, Gauntlet, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Tetris, Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade), because they were from different companies (regardless of whether or not the actual game was the same). It does not count the Aladdins, Racermate, Sachens, pirates (even pirate originals, under which some might categorize the Sachens), homebrews, repros, or protos. It does, however, count all licensed Nintendo retail releases, as well as all games from legitimate (by that, I mean with some form of representation in the US, be it a company headquarters, a mail-order address, etc.), unlicensed companies (Tengen, Color Dreams/Bunch Games/Wisdom Tree, AGCI, Active Enterprises, Camerica, Panesian (I'm quite certain the address to which you had to send your order for the Panesians was based in the US...I could be wrong), etc.).

If you want to know what my list looks like, run an advanced search in the NA database for NES games, type in "a e i o u" without quotes and check the box for "Any of these words". When the results come up (they should number 768), subtract Dizzy the Adventurer and Racermate Challenge II from the list, and you have my definition of a complete set image .

That list believe it or not is not accurate. It is missing 6 (maybe 7) games. I know for a fact it is missing the 3 licensed Tengen games (Pacman, RBI Baseball, and Gauntlet). The list is also missing 3 (or maybe 4, i forget) games that are licensed.

There are 677 licensed games with unique serial codes. This is a fact.
  • how's that total carnage painting coming?

It's missing Mike Tyson's Punch-out and Miracle Piano too.
  • I've always wondered about this too, but I wasn't going to ask until I got around 650 unique CIBs. I'm going to include everything except Sachen games. As far as variants go, I want black / blue Color Dreams CIBs, hangtab / non-hangtab CIBs for each game that fits the bill, and different box art variants too (such as the Pizza Hut vs. Non Pizza Hut TMNT 2).

Well generally a complete set is the box, manual and cartridge. At least for us all else like pamphlets and business reply questionnaires and epilepsy warnings are insignificant, many except when they come out of a sealed box, just for the temporary novelty feel image
  • What happens is you set yourself a limit, then you get to that limit, and then you set another limit. I'm just glad that I'm more gamer than collector. Once I get all the games I want (only games I plan to play, mostly RPGs) in cib condition for all the systems (NES and up, no Neo Geo or any other system that doesn't have RPGs), then I'll be done collecting. And yes I DO plan on stopping. In fact I'll be taking a break soon from collecting so I can start enjoying some of my recent purchases. I have enough games now that I could likely not buy another thing and have enough games to last the rest of my life.
  • Hey I hate to bump this thread, but can someone give me a link to a "complete" set, with my definition being no pirates / multi-carts / sachen / homebrews etc. Only licensed and unlicensed games such a Myriad / Color Dreams / Tengen / Wisdom Tree.

Would it be an excel version of every game on the NA price guide? Thanks guys, but I'm almost at the point of creating a "what's left" list and starting to narrow down my search.
  • i always used etlers list. there arent many additions you would have to make to that... blue untouchables comes to mind, black hollywood squares box, black version of king of kings, i cant seem to think of any others, but it has been so long since i looked at that thing

    its missing 6
    the 3 tengen licensed games
    mike tysons punch out
    miracle piano
    cyberball

  • I like to consider a complete set consisting of all licensed games. Then the unlicensed games being that of another set to accent your complete set. I collect any game that will work in the NES.
  • You guys do know that this site(the one your a member of) has a very good data base! Right? I meen they have a search list that you can do all types of only these not these, this country ect. ect. ect.. Theres realy no need for links to anywhere. It's already here and so are you! So have fun.

I made my list of what i think counts. Cross checked with Digipress and typed it in word. Copied it. Erased what I have and now I have a list of everything I need. Then when I meet someone new and they ask for a list, I can just print one out. It did take a few days. But when your done you feel a sense of completetion. And feel all neat and tidy. This also made me pull them all in Alphabeticle order.

Also why is X-men, Marvels X-men? It doesn't say Marvel?

    Thanx RASK1904
