Anyone remember this 1991 episode of Garfield & Friends where he gets addicted to video games?

I was always a huge fan of Garfield & Friends (yes I own all five DVD volumes) and this is one of my favorites where Garfield gets so easily addicted to video games...the graphics are about Intellivision level (ten years prior to the episode's 1991 airdate), but hey Garfield sure had quite a good imagination!

  • I watched this series when I was younger but I do not remember seeing this episode. Definitely older graphics in that game that's for sure! Thanks for sharing!
  • I don't remember it but I'll check it out.

I always hated the friends, and wished the show could have just been Garfield.
  • I used to watch this show all the time, how has it held up?

It rain for seven seasons when even the best Saturday Morning cartoons were quite lucky to get more than two.  So that's gotta mean something.

Now if only the Muppet Babies could get on DVD (considering all the copyrighted material that was used for the closet scenes and such, that's not going to be easy).  And you know what, I think they too did a video game themed episode!  The comic strip episode where they did Peanuts was also great (and "Butterstotch Skeeter" was just too cute).

Can you imagine if I was so addicted to my games if let's say my wife was telling me that we got Pizza Hut and told me she got me a Meat Lover's Pan and she also got those breadsticks with extra seasoning that I like!  And it wouldn't even faze me.

Can you imagine if my cat got hooked on games like this?  Would be kinda hard since unlike Garfield real cats don't have thumbs

I think the breed of cat is called Manx? Where they have an extra digit or two, looks a lot like a thumb and therefore would suffice.
  • I think my cat is a cream mackerel tabby (that's what they told me at catforum.com) but yes he does sometimes show his adorable little fingers! But I don't think he has thumbs...

And why is your monkey scratching his monkey????
  • I'd forgotten about this cartoon. Thanks for the link. And the graphics do kinda remind me of the Intellivision (although obviously a creation of the animator). I definitely see how you'd make the comparison to the Intellivision.
  • One of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons! I vaguely remember this episode, OP. Great stuff!

On the DVDs you can just chapter skip over them (but some of the US Acres/Orson's Farm episodes are good; like the Over the Rainbow episode that guest starred Rod Roddy!).  And BTW, there's an episode called "Garfield's Garbage Can and Tin Pan Alley Revue" (look "Revue" up on wiki if you'd like) that both the title card/subtitles incorrectly call a review.

  • First VHS I ever owned contained an episode of Doug where he wins a "Super Pretendo" by just walking into a game store. He gets addicted and eventually packs it away to be with his friend. It promotes the "gamers are anti-social isolationists" idea. In reality, he would have been excitedly playing with friends.
