NA Scoreboard Legitimacy...
Is it possible that once the AVS/NA scoreboard is up and running that it could overtake Twin Galaxies in terms of scoring legitimacy for NES games? Could these scores be considered new official records if higher than previous ones?
I'm sure the scoreboard might be considered too informal for some gamers... Also the fact that the games wouldn't be played on an official NES is obviously an important component to consider as well. But for me, I really look forward to seeing NA members crush some of the high scores on TG's website regardless. We've already been doing it for years actually... I personally have a few games lined up to play once this thing starts. So what do you guys think?

But seriously, I doubt anybody outside our little community will take it as "Legit High Scores".
The fact that you have to run a computer software problem opens the doors to skeptics who can claim cheating is involved. Also, the "Only machine" that you can run the games on has a built in Game Genie...leaves more skeptics...
Even after Brian, Dain and Zzap have built in some great anti cheating code into the system.
I'm currently fourth place on the shooter scoreboard and I suck at shooters.
NA Weekly Contest scores != NA Scoreboard.

EDIT: I misread, sorry.
It would be cool if all records had to be submitted in person with a live referee, etc like back when TG did it with arcades. You could even make it into an event and stream it live, even have a cheering crowd,etc....again probably similar to what TG did as well. I know that it would not be feasible for most, and logistically more trouble than it would be worth, but it would be cool and you'd know it was legit. Plus it would be really cool to see the mettle of the gamers tested as there would be intense pressure to break a record or at least do very well,so that would be interesting to see how each gamer handled that.
I've been saying for months that these contests are pointless because emulators are alowed. But apparently that makes me a jerk.
I play in them and I don't think that makes you a jerk. Unless it's because you think someone would cheat
imo, if your going to cheat in the weekly contest, that's just sad. And I'm not going to waste my time worrying if someone is cheating, I'll just beat them anyway
But i don't think they should be allowed either because of the oppurtunity to practice with save states.
As for an official scoreboard over tg? No.
I'm really looking forward to the AVS for high scores as well. I don't really care if the rest of the world thinks my score or any other NA member's score is legit. I'll know.
Like you'll be posting any high scores anyway
In this day and age, anyone could submit something online and say "I did this" whether legitimate or not.....so I really just take all that with a grain of salt.
This.

To be completely honest the contest is a great excuse for me to expand my NES collection and play good games (or bad ones) I have never heard of or have never played..either that or compete with others against games I have felt I am very good at
Kick master is one of the ones that I would never spend the money on but strictly because if the contest I am.going to get it

The score preserved for posterity in your avatar for all time !!

I thought TG list if a record was recorded live or recorded.
The live ones with a referee are the only "real" scores really.

I'd love to do one live in front of a crowd. Man that would be so cool, whether you broke a record or not.

Yup. I like competition, excuse to expand collection and play/buy games I never would.
+1 for kick master I probably wouldn't have bought that one if not for the contest.

I don't think you are a jerk about it at all. It's a legitimate concern,as is using an Everdrive as they support save states. With it,you could actually play on real hardware and still use save states, therefore giving off the illusion that one is using a cart and playing legit. I mainly use emulators because I usually have a very low budget when it comes to buying games. Having to pay off several school loans will do that.

I don't agree with you guts, his opinion has literally no importance since he never proved anything about the relevance of his concern. He's saying that but never played in said contest, never noticed that most of the top scorers are playing on actual NES and carts, that emulation is tolerated but not encouraged, that measures have been taken against potential cheaters many times, etc. If the contest was okay for Tom Votava, there's no reason to think it isn't good enough for him, so fuck his opinion really.
Also, I'm saying that to defend all the players that achieved awesome scores in the contest throughout all those years. I'm not going to let some random dude say that the contests are pointless because he's too much of a wuss to compete against 'some' people that need to play on an emulator in lack of owning 'x' cart.
At last, I would appreciate if he could raise that up only when it is actually justified, this thread isn't even about the weekly contest.

I understand,I'm just saying I can see where his concern is in regards to emulators. I don't like using emulators for the contests, but usually that's all I can use in most cases. I wish I could afford to buy all the carts for each contest season, but I usually have to use that potential money for other things.

I agree that emulators are a grey area, and that's why we try to monitor their use more than real hardware. The philosophy of the contest is to have fun first, but it doesn't mean that the competition is worthless. My point against him is that he never earned the right to criticize the contest ruling in the first place, and even less the right to call it 'pointless'.
