Faulty Sudoku Carts?

I was crushed yesterday when I could not play Sudoku, a game I've been anticipating more than even the NWC. It wouldn't work properly on my top loader and front loader; the screen just kind of shakes and, well, just take a look:

I've already e-mailed Retrozone about a replacement but I was wondering if it was my bad luck or if anyone else had any similar problems.

By the way, my NWC cart worked like a charm, and these are clean systems.

  • You got a new 72 pin and have you tried ejecting and re-inserting a few times?  Maybe you do just have a bad cart.  It can happen.  Happened with G.I. Joe for me.  image
  • Mine jittered a little on my toaster ...I reinserted it and it worked fine.
  • yes my copy also jitters like that, basically making it just bad enough so i cant play it.......
  • Mine jitters too.  with my nes with the new 72 pin.  should that be happening.  i couldn't get it to work properly.
  • It's not good to hear that other people are having the same trouble, but at least I know it's not just my rotten luck. I've tried again for a good half an hour to get it to work, but to no avail. Retrozone's e-mail is retrozone@retrousb.com if you want to arrange for a replacement.

As for me, five year warranty, here I come.
  • did you guys get it from the first batch, or did you guys just buy it? I got one of the first 20 or whatever, maybe your guys' problems are with the second batch

Yea mine was from the first batch and it works fine, must have been a faulty second batch image
  • Mine is from the second batch and mine works fine.
  • if the most rescent batch is the 3rd batch (the batch that just went out of stock this week)..... THEN MY GAME IS FROM THE SECOND BATCH...

but i did buy a copy from the newest batch (3rd batch) for a friend, let me go see if it works correctly....................... NOPE... this copy is worse than my 2nd batch copy.....

and its a toaster nintendo im trying these on.....

ok now let me try my top loader...

    2nd batch copy.... NOPE
    3rd batch copy.....NOPE

on the toploader they make it so the screen is not centered on the tv, and jitterey

on the toaster same thing for the 2nd batch copy... but the 3rd batch copy is way worse total jitters all over.. lol

  • This scares me. I need to test mine out. I've yet to throw it in my toaster.
  • Mine is from the 3rd batch and glitches, i think its just ones with new 72 pins or a certain type of new pins.  works good on my old one, and one of my 72 pinned ones, but not my friends.  at all.   fidgety.
  • damn i was really hoping to get this game but with all the trouble you guys are having with the game I think i'll hold off for a bit till the game gets fixed. image
  • Has anyone heard back from Brian (bunnyboy) about the problem?
The rom hasnt changed, the PCBs havent changed, and if the problem exists on a top loader, it shouldnt be a Ciclone issue.

  • I got one from the latest batch and it seems to work fine
  • I'm not keeping count on batches, but mine came from the recent one (7/24, to be exact). It seems to perform worse on a front loading NES, though it's still not playable on a toploader because of the shaking.

Al, I PMed Bunnyboy and sent Retrozone an e-mail on the 28th, but I haven't heard back from anyone yet.
  • I also have a copy from the newest batch(7/24) and it works perfect on both my toploaders and my toaster.I have never seen the screen shake at all.And just in case in matters my toaster has the orginal 72pin connector in it,It has never been changed. That really sucks that your guys carts are not working right becuase it is a awesome game and worth every penny of the $20.NOFRIENDO
  • Perhaps it has the same problem as the PowerPak where extra resistors are required.

  • btw...mine toaster has it's original pin connector...so maybe the replacement pin connectors have something to do with this...I'll try mine on my toploader and see what happens.
  • I got mine from one of the latest batches, but I'm not sure which one. I tried mine this morning and it worked perfect on my toaster with an aftermarket 72 pin connector.

    Great game, Al.
  • I have returned from CGE! I have a stack of Sudoku 2007 carts here so I will check them on all my systems in the next few days, but this isn't something I have seen before. Each cart is tested before shipped out but it could be a NES/connector variable or just a flaky chr rom chip. For those having problems:

    1. Does the game still play completely?

    2. If front loader, is CIC disabled?

    3. Does cleaning the cart pcb contacts help?

    4. Which day did you place the order?
  • hi all, i have been in contact with retro zone. he says every cart was tested on his nes, and they all worked fine... so has anyone with a jittery cars actually got it to work?
  • ^ My Sudoku cart is very picky, but it does work with some effort. It's actually the only cart in my original NES that needs to be positioned perfectly to run - but run it does image
  • hey guys, dang i just tested mine and it doesnt work either :-( i guess im gonna have to get ahold of bunnyboy. i got the first batch frm retrozone. (the blue cart ones) and soon as i turn it on the screen goes all shaky and hay wire. And then sometimes when i reset it, it looks like it starts to work but like the whole screen is one color and realy plane, but when i first turn it on everything is all different colors and looks sweeter. any ideas, anyone hear anything?
  • I have one form the first batch and one of the new ones with the seal and both of mien work fine.

  • I bought two of these from retrousb but only received one, the first one I got worked fine.  Over a week and still no word on what went wrong and I leave for 2 weeks on my honeymoon this sunday.
  • FYI guys.  The problem may be the ROM itself.  I've been talking with Bunnyboy about it.   If anyone on here has a cart that doesnt work for them, can you download the demo version ROM at nesworld and try it out on a powerpak and let me know if you see similar issues.

None of mine or Bunnyboy's systems see the problem.
I've sent him all the src code as well so we can double check I havent missed something.

  • Finally got around to trying my cart out today. It doesn't jitter like some of the others mentioned, but it does do some weird things. Half of the graphics show up, and half don't. I can see the numbers and text in the game, but no grid. At the title screen, all I can see is the cursor, but no text... weird!

This was in a toaster with original pin connector.
  • Has anyone had an problems with a top loader? Just curious.

    ~~NGD
  • yes NGD i have just check my post on the first page here from 7/30/07

oh by the way i havnt had the time to futz with either copy i have.. maby next week ill have time.. ill keep everyone posted when i try to get em working..
  • i tried mine on a few different systems to see if I could get it to act funny but no luck.
It worked on my top loader, 3 toasters, and a gen nex.
