Over priced game stores: I found the king of them all

So i was in New York this past weekend. My girlfriend and i went all over looking for game stores.  Came across this one.  St. Marks Video Games it was called.  One hell of a collection but holy shit his prices were threw the roof.  I dont think he had a game for less than $9.99.   Here are some examples of what his prices were.  Mega man 3 loose - $39.99   Donkey Kong loose - $49.99  Contra loose - $39.99 alright so he thinks popular titles might sell high.  Now we get to some more loose titles.  Gyromite $14.99, Top Gun - $19.99,  yeah thats just some examples, and most of them were dirty as hell.   BUT!! to top it off. he got an extremely mint Big Box Gyromite.  I asked how much it was the one guy said $150.   I was like uhhhh... is that with the box.  Oh no it doesnt come with the box.  The other guy was like " well we could give him the box".  Nope the boss said he doesnt wanna get rid of the box.    DAMNNN IT!

But aside from his outdated prices.  He had the biggest selection ive ever seen in a store.  And he had alot of really rare titles.   Surprisingly his rare titles were priced right where they should be. It was just the common stuff that was way high.  Well... I guess the reason he has so much is cuz no one buys anything from him.

  • Too bad he didn't wanted to sell the Big Box Gyro, $150 would have been a steal !
  • Jump on that Donkey Kong, that's a great deal man!
  • sounds like the idiots that will be selling everything for pratical nothing when they go out of business
  • There's a shop with prices like these in my town, and there in the business since a long long time. I guess there is some stupid people to pay sky high prices.

But it always worth to check in these places, unknown games like Dragon Fighter, Power Blade 2, unlicensed and such are the cheapest of their games most of the time.
  • go in there and get that big box gyro when the boss is there offe rhim a little more..... if you dont have the money or want it, ill take it! seriously....
  • sorry this may be a stupid question. What does "Big Box" gyromite mean?
  • its gyromite that came in a oversized box that has the gyros for the game included

There's a pic of one next to a regular box Gyromite in the link above.
  • that store has been around forever and used to be under a different name (but still heavily overpriced). you should have asked before you went to nyc looking for "bargain stores". there are ZERO nowdayas.
  • Theres an even stupider store here in San Diego. The name is Game Rave and there prices are insane! 60 bucks for a loose Bionic Cammando? He has some good popular stuff but the prices are crazy. 140 for a loose Secret of Mana? I was in there one time and I asked him why the prices were so high and he said becuase the games are rare. I said not that rare, I can get them on Ebay for 1/4 the price. He got mad said he hates Ebay, kicked me out and called me an asshole! He'll have Chrono Trigger loose 200. I'm serious. This guys crazy! I always bring it up with my friends and we laugh. Every now and then I go by just for a laugh. I don't say anything no more. I went with my girlfriend and she said all loud why's Zelda 120$. It was hillarious. I'm just showing that someone who doesn't know to much about Nes game prices thinks he's crazy. I've never bought a game from this store and never will. I don't need to.

    Thanx RASK1904

  • One of the local game stores here told me that you can't make any money on ebay. I had no idea. Apparently I've been doing something wrong.
  • i went to this store when i went to go skate in New York, retarded.
  • I recall one store in the mall had a Mega Man 5 for NES for $49.99 loose. Aghh. I even told the guy at the register, "Are you serious!?"

In a flea market I found one guy selling games on NES like Double Dragon 2 for $18, TMNT 2 $20, and SMB 2 $25.
  • thanks guys for answering my question about the big box gyromite.
  • Yeah, we have an Al's here in Seattle that has some pretty stupid prices, tho you can still get good deals. Mostly not as insane as some of the stuff in this topic but... Phantasy Star II cart only for $50? Phantasy Star III cib for $70? It's just craziness.

I don't really buy anything from second-hand stores.

  • Anyone remember McVan's? Are they still alive?
  • Here in Finland we have a few stores that have ridiculous prices, but a store called GameParadise gets it all. They have been banned from a finnish auction site 2 or 3 times for using a second account to boost the prices. They also sell carts at about 20 euros, SMB3 or similar games go up to 45-60 euros. And NES Advantage Joystick (Can't remember if the name was that) costs 199 euros. SNES carts also go easily to 60-70 euros depending on the game.
  • Hilmarf told me about this store here in Norway who is selling a loose SMB for $70
  • There's a store here that sells every NES game for $3.95 except for the ones in the case, which range from $9.99 to $39.99. I believe all Mario games were priced at over $30 so they WOULDN'T sell. Weird. They don't like to give you the boxes either.
  • There is a store in Victoria, hereon the island like that too. Stupid prices for common games and average prices for rare games. He also has no rotation of games. Lots to choose from. I'm finding this to be more and more common among video game stores and pawn shops.
