Games you got as a kid and absolutely hated

Did you ever get a game as a kid that you bought ot rented and you absolutely hated. I remember me and my cousins rented mortal kombat mytholigies sub zero and we hated the game with a passion. Then that christmas I got my own N64 with Mariokart 64, Jetforce Gemini and Mortal Kombat Sub Zero Mythologies

  • Hydride and Elevator Action

Edit: haha, my phone's kind of racist.
  • On NES, Castlevania II Simon's Quest. Didn't know what to do and hated it.

On N64, as I got older, I bought Hexen from Wal-mart for $70 + tax (most games were $60 at the time). Single handedly the worst purchase I've ever made on a video game. And of course I tortured myself and my friends by forcing us to play it... had to get my money's worth.

God, yes (NO!) Hydlide! I vividly remember standing in Toys R Us with my brothers and picking it based on the cover art. Much weeping and gnashing of teeth followed, but we beat that damn thing.

  • Had kind of a love-hate thing going with Hudson Hawk.

It's the only legitimately "bad" game I recall owning as a kid.

But I muscled through and learned to love the quirks.

(I guess some people might count Astyanax, but I actually thought that one was fun from the get-go with the big colorful boss monsters)
  • Romance of the 3 Kingdoms and Genghis Khan. Not surprisingly for a 5 year old, I could not understand what the hell was going on. Sadly those traumatic experiences turned me off from these types of games for life!

Also 95% of N64 titles lol

It's funny I still don't like Koei games much, and I actually liked Genghis Khan as a kid. The action animations were charming.

I really need to play it again. Have a buddy that absolutely loves the series.

I think Astyanax is pretty good too
  • I remember getting Monsters Inc on GBA. That game was boooooring
  • My mom took me to get a game from the pawn shop after I had been REALLY sick when I was young (she felt bad for me and wanted to do something nice, my mom is awesome). I picked freaking Lemmings (SNES).

After about 15 min of playing it, I knew I didn't like it. I tried getting into it a few times, but I've never cared for the game... Still kicking myself for picking that instead of ANYTHING else in the store.

While that was one of the more disappointing rentals I picked, as a kid... for a sleepover of all things... it's not a "bad game", per se.

It's just not really well-suited to the SNES controller interface.

If it supported the mouse, it'd probably be great.

Same thing with Populous.  I had that game on the SNES and while it wasn't "great" (and I certainly never devoted the time to actually beat it), I did play it quite a bit, just due to the novelty of it.

But a mouse interface would have made the game really good.

  • Palamedes for GameBoy - i played this one about a month ago again and I thought to myself: i was right about this one....it sucks
  • Out to Lunch, though it was my sister's.

I was also not thrilled about getting FIFA International Soccer. I had already given the sport up to focus on football and probably asked for something like Earthworm Jim, not a sports game. Ended up digging the game though
  • Atari 2600

SwordQuest Earthworld and Fireworld. My parents didn't know it was for a contest that expired a couple years before. Spent hours wandering around hoping something different would happen.

Journey Escape. Yeah, I was that one kid who bought that piece of crap. You haven't heard Don't Stop Believin' until you've heard it through an Atari soundchip.

Sea Hunt. A Froggo game. If you know Atari, you know how bad that is.

Desert Falcon. Played the shit out of it, but it has nothing on the decent 7800 version. That's when I learned not all consoles were the same.

    NES

Ghostbusters. Probably the most disappointing game for the NES in my experience.

Last Starfighter. My cousin had it, but I borrowed it. Hey, it'll be just like the movie ... right? Right...? ...
  • I remember disliking GolGo13 and ET on Atari. Robocop1 NES was also a game that I played alot, but could never figure out how to get up/down the stupid stairs.
  • Got my NES in 1987/8 I would have been about 8 years old. Got NES GOLF as one of my first games!

Absolutely did not know what the hell I was doing, and for some reason kept using the putter...
  • I knew Hydlide would turn up in the first 5 posts.
  • I remember getting Dash Galaxy for the nes and hated it. Ended up tossing it into a salvation army donation bin.
  • I remember getting Metal Gear cheap after Christmas in 1989 and I and my friends not being able to believe what utter, undecipherable garbage it was. Luckily, it essentially came with a walkthrough (everything's on the map), so I beat it, but I never did get any enjoyment out of it.

Looking back, it's not really as terrible a game as I thought as a kid, but it definitely doesn't rank up there the way modern game lists would like folks to believe.
  • WWF King of the Ring on Gameboy. Hated it.
  • MagMax. Worst birthday ever!
  • I liked all 25 of my NES games and all of my Atari 5200 games too. Funny enough I didn't enjoy Dragon Warrior at first, but I came around. I also had Ghostbusters, which is probably the most objectively bad game I owned on the NES, but I learned to love it.
  • I remember buying X-Men: Mutant Academy for gameboy color new at release. I bought it based on a very extensive and positive review of the game from Pocket Gamer magazine (anyone remember this short-lived mag?) and it turned out to be so disappointing to me back then, that I traded the cart into Funcoland to probably get some game gear games. Although I have been meaning to pick it back up to re-complete the box I still have from purchase.
  • I don't think there were any games that I outright hated as a kid(my standards were much lower then), but I never really cared for Glover, I guess.
  • Had a buddy from school once, saying he had mega man to trade for my castlevaina and he shows up the next day with magmax. I'm like wtf is this!!! I still hounored the trade and he took two weeks to bring it back. Do you know how long 2 weeks feel like to a kid?? I never gave back magmax though

I actually liked Top Gun once I learned how to land. The Advantage is a must, though
  • Sorry mom :/ I love you! But yoshi cookie.... Hated it. I know that was "for me" but..... ya. I tried to play it.

Anyway. More than made up for it on my tenth Christmas. Mega man 6. Fuck ya! Played that one till the sun came up.
  • Extreme G for N64. I got it for my birthday and had to anxiously wait all though the school day before I could go home and play it. Got home, stuck that puppy in and... 15 minutes later I was playing Goldeneye.

This or ToeJam and Earl 2; though a solid game on it's own, not at all like the first.
