I am a proud dad that has started his daughters gaming experience

I gave my daughter Grace (8) her first system. I gave her a cheap Yobo, but did give her 2 real NES controllers. I gave her the only 3 extras i had. I told her that if she wants games, she will have to get them herself, trade, save and buy them, or get them as bday/X-Mas gifts. She almost didn't get Super Mario Bros. but did find one for $10 at the local shop. Yea she overpaid, but at 8 she can only do so much. She might come here (with me) to see if she can pick up some titles. She likes platformers and beat-em-ups.  I am so proud. Now my son wants in. He wants TMNT II.......... What have I done???

*****EDIT****

We started a reward system at the house, where I give dollar coins for extra chores and odd-jobs around the house. I pre-purchased some games that they said they wanted from watching NES reviews on YouTube. I will post a picture of thier "store" here soon. They arn't permitted to play them until they buy them. They only get them once they earn the money that I paid for it (round down to nearest dollar). The "store" is open 1 day week and has about 14ish games in there to select. Most games are popular good games. Although, it does have a Time Lord in there for $3, so its not all perfect.

Her games so far

Super Mario/ Duck Hunt

Super Spike VBall / World Cup

Double Dribble (Given from Me)

Blades of Steel (Given from Me)

Thrillas Safari ( Given from Me)

Rescue Rangers

Superman

Rampage

Rad Racer

RC Pro-Am

That is really kind of you. I am so taken back. I will shoot a PM over right away. I will also take a picture of them with her once she gets your surprise so you can see her face and her gaming set up.

  • Thats awesome. One of the things that keeps me collecting games and keeping some of my stuff over the years is the thought of sharing with future kids.
  • That is great to hear! Maybe in a few years she'll have more games than you

My boy will be six in September and we beat Hyperstone Hiest together last week.  Such a great feeling sharing my old memories with him.

I got some commons for Grace so PM me.  I remember being her age and only having 5 games lol.

Wow this is awfully kind of you as well. I love support from the community. I will PM you right now

Since I have had a few people offer to send some titles, If its ok, I might list the ones that people are offering her. Not say who they are from (unless they want that out there). I had somebody ask that way they don't gift her something somebody else was going to send to avoid doubles.  Also she doesn't care about condition too much. Her thing is she likes to be able to read the top of the cart so no need to give her collector quality carts.. I gave her the same cart holder that I had as a little boy. It made her smile knowing she had something of my past in her new game collection.

    Try Vintage.nintendoage.com

you might have luck editing OP there.

  • Yeah. My kids are 4 and 2 and they love watching me play my NES and just seem so interested in it. It's like some ancient artifact to them. My daughter points at a game on my shelf every day and says "Daddy, you played that when you were a kid." And it brightens my day.

  • My son's 3, I got him hooked on the Sesame Street Hide and Speak. He loves it.
  • I always wanted to play games with my kids. She seems to be digging it pretty hard. All she wants to do is play now. We have watched 5 top 10 nes lists. She wants to have fun.

I find irony in the bolded.

In all seriousness, that's pretty awesome Mason.

  • Man I want a kid now, I have nephews but I am sure it is nothing close to the same joy you get from your own...I wonder what my girlfriend would say if I just went up and said hey let's have a baby!.....no I mean like right now.

Kids are great. Especially when they're old enough to do all the household work you are tired of doing every day.

But seriously, wouldn't trade mine for the world of Nintendo.
  • I like this thread

Reminds me of my nephew playing Megaman X SNES games and Zelda 3.

I taught him how to hack his own cheats in Megaman X games with the ZSNES emulator.
  • Grace just recently bought Power Blade. Yup she wanted that one after seeing the review. I bought it and put it in our "store". It took her a lot of work, but she earned the $35 to buy it. She loves it and we are playing it together.

"Screw collecting games! Imma start me a kid collection!"

If I hear a news story about Ontario kids going missing, I'm pointing the authorities your way.
  • This thread is awesome.

I love the reward system you got going on there, reminds me of one my parents set up for me for school: "Get an 'A', we will buy you a game. Get a 'B' you can only rent one at the rental store. Get a 'C' or lower, and you ain't getting jack diddly squat and I'm taking your Nintendo away!" lol
  • This is the best thread ever, I grew up with my power adapter always being taken away when I got in trouble with my brother, so this is like the complete opposite and I love it
  • Yea I love watching her fall in love with the system and vintage games.
  • This is great. I like that you make them earn their games too, learning the value of hard work is something most kids never learn. It' cool to see new generations of kids jumping into classic games.
