Anyone here actually have a FULL Atari set...I mean all the games (or at least as many as humanly possible...I've heard a few were mail order through catalogs and only a few even exist today...)? I kinda want to go for it because well...one the cheapness and two I don't see a lot of collectors collect for it...

I don't think you have to worry about prices spiking on Atari stuff, but I guess you never know  The thing about a full Atari set is there's a ton of label variants, a ton of games that are the same, just a minor hack and a bunch of games that are confirmed to exist but only a handful of copies have surfaced. So you gotta know when to say when. I'm going off a list somebody posted on AtariAge that doesn't count label variants or minor hacks, just unique titles released in North America, and that list is only about 420 games. I know people will say it's not a "full set" but I'm not interested in thousands of games where the majority are copies of each other, so that's good enough for me

Well my hopes are that Atari is just to "old" for people. Since unless you want to open one up and mod it...you'll need a damn old TV to play it...that's always been my major dislike of Atari...the hardware is just soooo old.

I haven't really been hard after 2600 games...I just pick them up when I spot them for a buck...and I'm not following a list...I should I suppose. Can you give me a link to that 420 list?

  • Atari can get addicting as once you get past the primitive graphics and sounds, there's a lot of addictive gameplay to be had. It is an acquired taste though, and I only joined the ranks of Atari collector in 2012 after collecting Nintento for nearly ten years. Most games don't last longer than 5 minutes so it's a very ADHD friendly system. You'll blow through a stack of carts in no time only to do it all over again. One fun game I devised is to turn off all the lights and pull a random Atari game off the shelf and plug it in without seeing what it is!

Also don't forget a bunch of games have endless variations via the Select and difficulty switches so you can quickly get lost if you don't have a manual to look up what does what. Fortunately places like AtariAge and AtariMania have databases where you can just look stuff up. Also there's a thriving homebrew community for Atari that nearly dwarfs the NES homebrew scene.

Activision is the best of the 3rd party Atari developers and almost all their games are good unlike 1st party Atari and most of the other 3rd parties. I almost have a complete Tengen NES collection (I only lack RBI baseball 2 and 3 because I'm not really a baseball fan) and Activision seems like a worthy goal. I have a bunch of Activision carts already and recently picked up H.E.R.O. for $25 bucks at Game-X-Change.

My Pitfall II has some tweaks though as I made a pitch bending circuit:

Overall I can't really get into the Pitfall games much, but they are classics and still fun for a bit.
  • The Atari 2600 has a great shooter library.

    Yeah sure: http://atariage.com/forums/blog/279/entry-5704-how-many-atari-2600-games-are-there-answer-470/

According to this list it's 421 North American releases and 49 Pal exclusives. I'm not sure how accurate it is but that's what I'm going with for now, if I find stuff cheap that isn't on the list I'd still pick it up of course

Yeah Atari games a great in terms of backlog management  it certainly is an acquired taste, but if you look at them for what they are there is definitely some great games, some of which I can even play for 30 min to an hour if they're made well (looking at you, kaboom) I'm looking forward to completing the set and playing through them all. And it's funny you say that about pitfall, I kind of feel the same way. People always claim it's one of the better games but I think it's just ok, there are plenty of Activision games I like more. I can see the appeal back then but I don't think it's aged as well as other titles

I think anyone who grew up playing Super Mario Brothers (myself included) will struggle to appreciate Pitfall. And Pitfall II is sort of Metroidy in a very primitive way.

  • Atari activision games are the best... but the labels are the worst!

My favorite titles from that set are Private Eye, Pressure Cooker, Enduro, River Raid, and H.E.R.O.

Don't think of it as "Actiplaque." Think of it as a fine patina that adds character with age...

  • Bump, updated OP
  • Rad. So many quality titles, Bert. Nice snag with H.E.R.O., too. Putting that 2600 through its paces? What have you been playing lately?
  • Nice. Also try Spider Fighter; it's a great playing ga,e if you like SHMUPs. It's really hard to find a bad Activision game, definitely one of the better Atari collecting subsets.

I played Spider Fighter for a bit and enjoyed it, but haven't put any serious time into it yet. And yeah from what I've played still haven't found a stinker, love the Activision games so far
  • Been a while since I've update this..

Just need 15 more, listed on my signature. If anyone wants to sell me them, I'll happily take them off your hands
  • I'll let you know if I get any in with the next couple of lots. I know someone is selling at least Double Dragon on NA. I cannot remember the members name but when I mentioned wanting to buy from them a while back you knew who it was.

    I still need pitfall II
  • Bert, based on the pic you posted yesterday, I just wanted to make sure you were aware--not all carts that came in Activison-style cases were actually published/distributed/etc. by Activision. The copy of Skate Boardin' you've got, while created by David Crane (of Pitfall!, Pitfall! II, etc. fame) was actually put out by Absolute. There are also a bunch of Epyx cartridges that originally came in that case. And, toward the end of the 2600's lifespan, Imagic also started putting out carts in that same case, so I'm guessing Activision just flooded the manufacturer's market with leftover case stock and whoever was still pumping out carts ended up with some of them. You might know this already and have Skate Boardin' there just because it fits, but I figured I'd give you a heads up just in case.

As for your want list, I'm pretty sure I've got extra copies of Sky Jynx and Laser Blast and possibly another couple in the list. I just set a reminder on my phone and will give you a heads up when I get home if I've still got the spares knocking around or not so you can (hopefully) knock a few more off your list.

that's exactly why, just figured that was the best spot for it rather than leave an empty hole
