I was thinking of picking them up the other day. Are they any fun to play? They the say the the MSX2 Metal Gear is superior but are the Nes games worth playing?
I always enjoyed Metal Gear on nes for what it was but I think it was badly translated and not something Kojima is proud of. There was not much like it on the nes at the time.
Snake's Revenge has always been a game I liked and for the longest time I thought it was Metal Gear 2. I think they are both fairly cheap so I would def recommend them.
No. The NES version is crap. From what I recall they had to remove the save feature for the NES version and it sucks. Also, punching dogs man, punching dogs. I had this game, and I could never get past the first 3 screens.. not areas.. screens.
The original Metal Gear was one of my favorite games when I was a kid. I loved the strategy and having to wait to get past people. Also had the whole game mapped out when I finally beat it.
Yeah it's kinda frustrating because I do have an MSX but apparently Metal Gear 1 is only for the MSX2. There seems to be something appealing about the butchered nintendo port, but I don't know if it's worth the time.
I never got into any of the playstation games to begin with so I'm not crazy over Metal Gear.
As with most Konami games, the music is pretty awesome on both. The gameplay is not too bad, I personally enjoyed playing both titles. If you want to check them out, it wouldn't be a total waste.
Just play the MSX version of Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on the HD Colelction on PS3 - It is included with that version of Subsistence! By far the best way to play, makes the two NES games irrelevant.
I'm surprised that so many people didn't like the first one. I though it was quiet fun. But, I am a pretty big fan of Metal Gear Solid. I have never tried Snake's Revenge.
I like them both, and still think of Snakes Revenge as a good sequel. And a much as Kojima likes to dis it, that obviously didn't stop him from borrowing a lot of ideas from it.
Saying the NES port is terrible compared to the original MSX version is exaggerated in my opinion. The MSX version is truly better, but the NES port is still playable and enjoyable.
I enjoy Metal Gear on the NES and I play through it every year. I haven't played the MSX version, but I've read and heard that it is a bit better than the NES version. As for Snake's Revenge, I actually enjoy it more than Metal Gear. It's a bit harder than Metal Gear, but it's so much fun to play. I also love the graphics, sound effects, and music in the game. I'm not crazy about the side-scrolling parts, but the rest of the game is solid in my opinion.
Had it as a kid, never really got into it. I remember playing it and just getting bored/frustrated...meh. Even though I have a bit of nostalgia for it, it's just not for me. I have both of them though sitting on a shelf and that is where they will remain

I think it's a completely fair critique to say that game is just not that good compared to other games on the NES, at the time, despite being relatively early in the system's library.
From other threads about the NES in general it seems many of us didn't have the system, at all, until 1989, or later, so there were already multiple years of more mature (in the sense of using the system resources in impressive ways) releases.
Legend of Zelda predates Metal gear in the US by almost a year. (in terms of the expectations of quality and duration for a top-down exploration game)
Contemporary to Metal Gear you have stuff like Mega Man or Double Dragon.
Within the same calendar year you have Zelda 2, Blaster Master, and Bionic Commando.
My point about being "pissed" as a kid, would have centered on with the kind of limited game-buying options that most kids faced, with the wealth of great games that existed to choose from... Metal Gear would have been a HUGE disappointment to a lot of us.
It is a unique game on the system, and it is interesting to look back on and play, with the benefit of either an emulator (free) or a cheap used cartridge.
But paying MSRP for that game in the late 80's would have been a big waste of money.

I'd have been pretty pissed if I'd bought them, as a kid, but they are interesting to look back on and try with some hindsight.

I don't really like them, personally. I'm not a huge fan of the series on any console, I find them a bit boring and they make me feel asleep.
I see what you did there.
Also, punching dogs man, punching dogs.

Metal gear for nes is one of my favorite games of all time. I cant believe anyone would diss it.
Yeah what he said.
It's an all time classic. Sure its not as good the MSX version but it still a great game.
I'd have been pretty pissed if I'd bought them, as a kid...
Yup, pretty pissed is a good description of what I was. And would you believe that I also chose Hydlide not too long before/after that?
I personally prefer Snake's Revenge over Metal Gear. It's more refined/fun.

I'm sorry for your loss
