Still trying to beat Battletoads...

So the furthest I've gotten on a single continue is Clinger Winger. I'm almost at the end!

Fortunately after the difficulty of the third rat race, the boss fight is a breeze. Seriously, he's the second easiest boss in the game after the first one.

  • I'm really pulling for you to finish this off once and for all!

General Slaughter is indeed easy and out of place for that part in the game.

The only way I've ever beaten clinger winger is by exploiting the pause button... someday I might want to try to learn to beat it without that, but for now I just want to make it to the last level by any means necessary.

General Slaughter and Big Blagg are equally easy

Hypno orb is a little tougher for me, even though it should be a simple wash-rinse-repeat patten

Robo-manus is pain, but if you stay to the far left and play conservatively, you can avoid getting flattened

Dark Queen (I have only fought her a couple times so its hard to judge the difficulty.. it seems the randomness of her pattern can sometimes work in your favor, or sometimes make it extra tough
  • I gave up on Battletoads. I just accept now that I will never ever beat it.

Clinger Winger is the most physically demanding stage. It's very long with no check points other than the boss, requires constant precision so needs practice, and hurts your thumb the more you practice it. Totally sadistic in concept, it's an appropriate choice for second to last stage in Battletoads.

I do have to give the game designers credit for packing it with so much imagination and variety. So much more than a TMNT rip off has a right to be. No matter how frustrating it gets, I want to keep playing.

  • BTW, the trick to beating the third rat race, if you're quick enough at the beginning so that you can headbutt him on the beams above the second purple moving platform, he'll get stuck up there for a bit, and you're guaranteed a huge head start. Then you only need to ram him a few more times when he catches up with you, and you'll win. It's still not easy, but it's probably the easiest way to do it.
  • Clinger Winger really isn't all that hard once you get the hang of it.

This is also true of chainsaw juggling.
  • Chainsaw juggling (any juggling) takes much more practice. In Clinger Winger, you just have to get the feel for when to do the turn (there are only two possible directions any given time), and then apply that consistently. Of course it varies per person, but I felt it was one of the easier levels in the game.
  • I don't want to jinx it but I'm finally making it close to the end of Terra Tubes, dudes! We can do this. My #1 NES goal of the summer is finally beating this damn game.
  • Clinger Winger is the easiest stage in the game other than the 1st stage IMO.

Just hit the d-pad when you hit the 90 degree angle...not before, not after.....it takes little to no time to get the feel for it.

What the hell is the pause trick?
  • Well when you get to orb boss, stay away from the left side of the screen. Let the orb come to you. Of course he'll switch his pattern up halfway though, but master that part first.
  • Last section of Terra Tubes, dudes; FAK! I have a client soon and really want to stick this lol. It's going to happen soon.
  • Well its probably obvious, but you shouldn't ever die without getting the 1UP. Are you missing the jump? Nailed by the shark?

Jump over all three ducks. Third one will require a single punch to get it going in the other direction.

Give the second shark a pounding or two to keep him off your ass. Always do that when he's coming from below.

The damn shark keeps snagging me, you called it dude. The second shark, to be exact.

  • Swim past him initially and move up between the spikes. When he chases after you from below, pound him. If he catches up to you by the time you reach the duck, you should be able to pound him from above again.

Hit pause right as you get to the 90 degree angle. Adjust your direction on the d-pad. Then unpause. You don't have to be worried about remembering which direction to go in, and it also your life easier if your controller is not that great.

The sharks are easier to pound if you put your back against the wall... I like to wait for him against the wall on the left, just after swiming past the first row of spikes.... They swim in a zig zag pattern and because of the way you are positioned, it is super easy to hit them before they can bite you. I just keep punching to stay in place, and also be ready for the shark to come back.. Just stay their, and let him keep coming back for a beatdown until you've killed it.

  • Game over for now, dudes. Thank you for the help with the shark fuckers; gonna try another run when I'm fresh later tonight. Fuck this game, lmao.
  • One of the most important things for beating Terra Tubes is memorizing the layout of the level so that you can deal with the sharks and other fish without swimming into spikes. You have to know exactly where to go and be able to do it fast. Then you won't have too much trouble.

Naw, 2nd stage is still easier than Clinger.  But I agree with the sentiment, Clinger Winger is very easy.  Just make sure you have good d-pad and make sure you are NOT pressing in 2 directions at once when you change angles.

Yeah 2nd stage is easier as well, I keep forgetting that the Wookie Hole is inbetween!

I ususally hate retro-youtubers, but i found this guy pretty funny in its sillyness of humiliating the game

Sometimes I'm having a great run and I can beat Robo-Manus with only one or two deaths and sometimes I'll have five deaths. You just want to have a bunch of lives in reserve at that point.

  • PS for me I stopped at V's Lair at the flying part. I just didnt want to spend the time to memorize it, at least just yet.

Once you've memorized all of the gates, the only part that should cause much trouble is the final gate at the very end of the level. You have to be prepared and immediately drop down after the gate right before it. It will get you sometimes.

  • The secret to the final gate is to not be too high on the previous gate

Correct. I'm getting very good at this level. The only part that sucks now is when you die and go back, and are too excited to continue that you fall prey to easy deaths. This game preys on your adrenaline, lol.

Speaking of adrenaline, wait until you see what the third rat in the next stage does to your blood pressure, haha. Those close races will get your heart pumping. The worst part is that if you're not enough ahead by the end, it can glitch and force you to reset. It happened to me once.

Yes, I'm well aware of the Rat Race glitch. I'm not looking forward to that level at all. I am, however, interested to feel out Clinger Winger
