Hilarious Battletoads irony
I died so few times and amassed so many lives by Rat Race that I was thinking "What if I get the glitch? I'm doing so well and have so many lives. Nah, it probably won't happen. But it could."
And sure enough I beat the third rat, but get the glitch for the second time ever. The gaming gods must have a cruel sense of humor. But I'm almost more amused by the predictable irony of it all than I am pissed.

that's not ironic, just very, very unfortunate. sorry to hear it, you seem like you're pretty damn good at the game
It was funny because I was thinking about the glitch happening because I was having such a good run at that point, and sure enough it did.
I've pretty much mastered the first nine stages. It's stages 10 and 11 that give me issues. I still can't reliably beat the third rat race or beat Clinger Winger at all.
You know, I'm curious why that glitch prevents you from beating the level. You've kicked the bomb. That rat drops off screen, but you can still hear him dropping. Why does the rat have to be on screen for the level to keep going? Why isn't kicking the bomb sufficient? This is such a weird bug. I'd be interested to know what quirks are involved here.
My best guess is that it was designed this way on purpose as the programmers wanted to create a lot of pressure and drama by having you win at the last second by juuuust beating the rat there, akin to disarming a bomb with one second left like you see so often in movies.
So I guess the rat is the RPG equivalent of a "story advancer". You do this, then the story advances. That level sees a rat on the last screen, game advances. No rat,no progress. And unlike an RPG,you can't backtrack in this game in order to try to meet perameters again.
Again,my best guess on the situation.
They spent right next to 0 USD on Q&A. Game is simply full of bugs.
Not that I doubt it (or you, Bea!), but is this a fact? Are there sources to back this up? I ask mostly because I'm secretly obsessed with this game, despite its unyielding difficulty
I've always wondered if the programmers purposely left it in (or even possibly programmed it that way intentionally) to add another layer of frustration to the entire thing. Instead of adding another hard level, why not add a killswitch point that's almost like Russian roulette? Seems kind of sickly genius to me.

I would have to agree that it was probably put in their intentionally by the programmers, what makes me believe it is true is the glitch that can also work in your favor by skipping the stage.

The amount of bugs in the code is just too staggering. It is clear that they didn't anywhere enough Q&A during the development of the game.
There is even a glitch that makes the game unbeatable if you reach a certain stage with two players.
None of those game breaking bugs are intentional. No programmer worth her salt would leave such bugs hanging around.

Excellent point actually I completely forgot about it because I never play 2-player.
