Well I already touched on from 2 to 3 in the OP. As far as from 1 to 2 the world is much bigger and you have a team of up to three instead of doing everything one-on-one (though that one-on-one business is ideal for introducing those like myself a few years back to those who are/were new to RPGs). I did forget to mention that in addition to your menu turning orange if a character gets knocked out (I must say those ghosts of your KOed characters in DW3 look weird without their halos) your menu will also turn green(?) to warn if one of your teammates is low (<1/4?) on HP and outside of battle will be a nice blue color at night.
DW3 is one of the greatest RPGs I have ever played. I like the pacing of it. The world is vast, and you can gain enough XP through the flow of the game without really going out of your way to grind for levels. I'd say of the four, DW2 is the grindiest.

I would hope not! This stuff is absolutely nuts for the time.
What do you mean?
Not going to put words in Toxie's mouth, but from my own experience playing it back in the day (and again a few years back), it was such an improvement over the previous installments that it took my breath away. It had a lot more content: introduced the day and night aspect, larger parties, even larger world, flying on a bird, the town under construction, amazing music, etc. Took a lot longer to beat compared to other RPGs of the time.
Yeah you sure do get your money's worth out of these classic 3rd/4th gen RPGs eh? Especially considering even the biggest NES game (which so happens to be Dragon Warrior 4) was only 1MB.

No worries, what you say is absolutely true.
Personally as far as the Erdrick series goes I would rank them III->I->II
II is just a huge piss off........I have not played it in a very long time and when I did it was on an emulator but all of the instant-death spells and difficulty curves just drove me nuts.
^ DW 2 can be really brutal with numerous enemies with instant death skills. If you encountered a party of those type monsters you pretty much knew someone in your party was most likely going to die.
It''s been a while since I've played it,but it seemed like enemies prevented you from fleeing more frequently.
And at times the game doesn't do that great of a job at pointing you in the right direction.

Yeah when I played it way back in the day. I didn't know what the hell to do first. I didn't really find out until the GBC remake.

BOO!
It's nostalgia speaking, for sure, but DW2 is my favorite in the series.
- You don't have to worry with the hassle of party management or class changes.
- The game has a great story/narrative, even compared to 3 or 4 (just shorter than either of those).
- You get all of the benefits of updated series graphics, interesting and plentiful dungeons, lots of quest items to figure out
- It introduces the ship to the series
- The final level (needing to make it through the tower PLUS all of the bosses in sequence) is genuinely challenging, even at a high level -- that area and battle set takes more strategy than anything the rest of the series has to offer on the NES.
It's one of the first really epic-scale JRPGs, and I just think it has more heart than the other installments.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this. I have mych nostalgia for DW 2. I remember skipping several days of school to stay home and play it. I loved the storyline.
It's a pretty small detail, but one thing I always loved about 2 was when you saved and didn't continue that it made a comment (can't remember the whole thing) about resting up because "Hargon does not sleep."
It just made you want to play it more.....like,he's still out there, doing more evil stuff.....get up and go get him!
And even with a maxed out party certain parts of the game are still no cake walk.

Glad to know I'm not alone
I just take particular offense that somebody might genuinely think DW1 is better than DW2. (other than Bunnyboy being too lazy a gamer to keep up with what's going on mid-game in DW2 )
There is more to do just rounding up your party in DW2 than there is to do in the entirety of DW1.

Oh absolutely! The anticipation of getting a comrade when you completed those quests made them exciting.

I>II>III>IV
The closest of those are II and III, there are significant gaps between I and II and between III and IV. I love all of them, but the original Dragon Warrior is the best. And I have played through each one of them multiple times.

II improved on I for sure without a doubt "technically" it is a better game but me personally like I more nostalgia aside.
Regardless I will go back and play it and see how I feel and if my opinion will change.....it is the only one I have not beat recently out of the NES games.

My favorite one is I for mostly nostalgic reasons plus I just really enjoy it. I think I have beaten every iteration of it that's made it here except maybe the GBC version.
As far as which one is objectively the best,I'd have to go with IV.
It is my least favorite of the quadrilogy though simply because I really like the Roto trilogy.
Well it took some doing but I got that Pyramid cleaned out (yes including the Gold Claw; it's in the vault now of course) and now I'm moving on to Ba-Ba-Ba, Ba-Baharata Cave...and apparently the opporutunity to do promotions (if you can call it that) is approaching. Should I have any of my teammates get promoted or not (unfortunately they end up having to start all over leveling so that complicates things a lot)

Yes you do, if you don't mind the sticker shock of the 3rd and 4th ones. And don't forget to get fresh batteries for them too.
Got a friend who can/will replace them for me for free. He's done it on my famicom sangokushi (romance of the three kingdoms) cart. Awesome dude.
I sure hope I don't find any terrorists in that Isis town/kingdom!!
What were some of the improvements from 2 to 3 and 4?

You didn't have the maps/charts/explorer's handbook did you? Yeah they did put all that crap inside the game box for a reason.
I only had the cart, got it from a friend.

I sure hope your mom didn't get this pissed at you for skipping school! And back then it didn't get broadcast for all the world to see! Yikes!!
