Oh okay...make your pilgrim a sage by the way. It won't take that long to grind him to a decent level.

I mean you have to expect to grind a bit.

  • What about the others? And why can't the promotion be straight forward like in FF1?   Then again in Japanese chess they do have a promotion where it might be more a good idea sometimes to not promote a silver general to a gold general, because a silver general (unlike a gold general) can move diagonally backwards. However a gold one can move sideways or directly behind but a silver one cannot.

PS: Apparently it is only through promotion that you can even have a sage at all correct?

Correct, the sage is the most badass class in the game and requires you to upgrade via the book of satorie or whatever the hell it is called.

  • So I should not also promote my Wizard and/or Soldier? And should I do so as soon as I'm eligible (Level 20) or wait?

Do it right away so it doesn't take as long to get them back up to your average party level.

I can't remember if you can do multiple party members or not.....if you can upgrade your wizard and pilgrim.

I wouldn't turn your soldier into a sage,I'd use your wizard or pilgrim instead.

Your soldier has zero MP,so converting him/her will still start you at zero. Plus you would be nerfing your best physical attacker.

The pilgrim and especially wizard are not strong physical attackers but have lots of MP,so the change won't be as drastic and both will have a good amount of MP to start off with and use for the higher end spells.

Also,I'm fairly certain that the sage ends up with higher physical attack power than the pilgrim and definitely higher than the wizard class.

Plus who's going to use all those powerful weapons if you convert your soldier? The hero can't use them all.
  • I think I have only changed one of my character's classes once. I have played with a Sage before, so I know I have done it at least once. I think one other time I played with a Soldier/Wizard or Wizard/Soldier. The last time I beat the game I did it with a Goof-Off all way through the end.
  • Okay, I now got the Ship as well as the Book of Satori for the Sage promotion(?) once Jamiee (my Pilgrim, and my darling little kitty cat   ) is up to Level 20, but I think I should go ahead and at least get the Jailer Key at (or near?) Tedanki. By that point I think I should be close to Level 20...and apparently Tedanki's got some nice new weapons/gear...any I should most definitely pick up as soon as I can? I did put aside a small rainy day fund in the Vault.
  • And so Jamiee my darling kitty cat just got promoted from Pilgrim to Sage...and apparently I did do the right thing by doing so as soon as he got to Level 20, because your EP gets reset to zero, which means any EP I had earned after reaching level 20 before promoting would've been WASTED. And his stats also got slashed in half   I sure hope this promotion is worth it...

It's worth it. Even though your stats are halved,it's better than starting from the beginning base stats. You should be able to level up fairly quickly at first and then you'll gradually catch up to the rest of the party. Plus you'll learn some pretty sweet spells.

  • I figured the area around Dhama was as good a choice as any for grinding seeing as how you sometimes get Metal Slimes and I must've really lucked out because I actually defeated three of them and within about 8-10 battles Jamiee is already back up to Level 11...good sign no?
  • So after several tries and getting lucky with the Sleep spell, I was able to defeat that Dragon guarding the Purple Orb (which you have to do twice   ) and I used a Merchant (Misty) to set up the new shop at the new town (nice original name   ). And isn't that a cute Mister Ed reference from that guy at the Soo Village? ^^
  • Well, after several tries I finally got the Thunder Sword and Swordedge Armor from the Cave of Necrogond, but it looks like I'll need to grind up to at least Level 30 or so (and get a third Silver Shield) to have any reasonable shot and getting all the way through that cave to the last Silver Orb.

The enemies in that cave are super annoying. Definitely use your bikill spell and whatever powerful spell you like to cast. I usually went with boom or snowblast although snowblast doesn't seem to work much on the mini demons.

  • Okay I did finally get through that cave and got all the Orbs and thus the Airship, eh I mean Ramia

So Baramos Castle is my next stop, trouble is I run into the same problem I did with the Necrogond Cave...I can do the battles okay but by the time I'm at all close to the end (and in this case there is a boss), I end up being "out of gas" (MP to heal with). So now that I have the Airship...SORRY Ramia it looks like I could really use the Shield of Strength (it's 15K though and I don't know if I have that much saved up) and after that the Water Flying Clothes (12,500G) for Tweetie (Wz, the best armor for Wz's). The Armor of Radiance is apparently in the Tower West of Kol and is your quarterback, sorry Hero's best armor but I bet it's even more heavily guarded
  • Yea that is why I suggested not using two MP reliant characters your first time through but it seems like you are doing fine regardless.

However the issue you are running into is pretty standard for DW games and is beneficial in my opinion because it is grinding while trying to progress so it is a lot less tedious.

Typically once you traverse an area for the first one or two times you will learn exactly where to go so when you gain a few levels and come back you can go from the entrance straight to the end with less battles and you are stronger which will make it even more easy.

I also suggest having Magic Armours equipped onto any eligible characters because Baramos as fire attacks that hit your entire party for "a lot" of HP....having them equipped will damp the damage.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but I thought most of the Dragon Warrior games necessitated running as a strategy at a certain point in the game, so that you can make it to the boss with enough health and magic power.  (unlike FF games with their practically unlimited inventory of restorative items)

  • I recommend buying a shield of strength for at least 2 party members, preferrably your heavy magic users until you can find the sage's stone.

If you want an easy (but rather boring) way to level up your party a few levels then you can find a group of goopis and farm them for Granite Titans.

So how you set this up is you cast increase on your party until they are at max defense and you also cast bikill on your hero and soldier. (and Pilgrim if you want)

Then you intentionally keep a goopi or two alive so they can call Granite Titans for help. And with your defense so high, they don't hit that hard so you can use the shield of strength to replenish any damage you have taken, except for the occasional critical they get on you. And since you are using your shields you are not using mp on healing alllowing you to do this longer. Yes it is boring, but effective.

Yeah it also doesn't help that unlike with FF (well starting with the SNES ones anyway) you can't use a save point/tent right before a boss to recharge.

  • You beaten this yet? I bested it last week and it is still a great game like I remember. You'll probably want to be in the mid 40 range when you take on the final boss. And you'll definitely want to get the sage's stone as well.
  • I'm still stuck on Barbamos   Let me see if 33/33/29/33 level will do the trick... Anyone got any ideas I haven't tried yet?

I was getting annihilated until I realized I was over leveled (36) but woefully under equipped. Once I got the magic armor for my wizard and sage and also got my sage the silver shield, the battle was a lot easier. You probably want to be at level 34 and have those items equipped on your wizard and sage. It will definitely take a lot of the sting off of blazemost and the fiery breath attacks.

  • I did finally get him (with the help of HealAll, a Leaf, and the BeDragon spell); that was so frustrating though

You're probably just a little under leveled. Now that you beat Baramos you can enjoy the last part of the game which is loaded with DW nostalgia!
  • Oh yes indeed, the Dark World, eh I mean Alefgard is just like that found in DW1   I'm now doing the North Cave, and I know this may sound a bit cowardly but it looks like it's best to run from the battles inside because you cannot heal with magic (or use any kind). Though as that giant turtle in Majora's Mask once said, it is not shameful to retreat; that in of itself is a strategery.

Just go buy a shield of strength or two if you can afford it. Since you can use it to basically cast healmore during battle,it makes that cave a lot easier.

I actually didn't tackle that cave first,I went and explored the overworld a bit and did stuff like get the oricon and then get the sword of kings aka Erdrick's sword.

  • Okay so I used the Rainbow Drop to build the bridge to Tourian, sorry Zoma's Castle. I'm now at 38/37/34/38 and here's how my equipment is so far:

Estil (Hero): Sword of Kings, Armor of Radiance, Shield of Heroes, Iron Mask

Denise (Soldier): Dragon Killer (and Thunder Sword), Swordedge Armor, Shield of Strength, Iron Mask

Jamiee (Sage): Staff of Judgement, Silver Shield, Magic Armor, Iron Helmet

Tweetie (Wizard): Staff of Thunder, Cloak of Evasion, Leather Helmet (I think there's a Magic Hat but it's nearly impossible(?) to get), Ring of Life

Anything I'm overlooking? And what does the Sacred Armlet and Sphere of Light do exactly?

And should I indeed move on to Dragon Warrior 4 or should I do one of my other RPGs waiting on deck, such as Phantasy Star 2-4?

I don't remember what the amulet does if anything. I did have my hero equip it though. The sphere of light you most definitely want to use on Zoma. You'll also want to find the sage's stone in his castle. The equipment looks good although if you want a higher chance at critical hits I would take the demon axe with you.

And DW 4 or not is up to you. Many consider it the pinnacle of the series. I have never played Phantasy Star so I have no clue about those series

I can say that DW 4 starts a whole new trilogy so no more erdrick, etc. but the game is amazing and less grindy. It also breaks the game down into chapters and focuses on each character in those chapters. It's really cool how they set it up.
  • Well folks, after giving DQ1+2 on the SNES (remember I got those repo carts), I thought I'd this time start up a second playthrough of DQ/DW 3...this time the SNES version!

And let me tell ya, both those remake carts look great! You get neat backgrounds for the battles and the enemies look so much bigger and more detailed, and adding the vault feature to DQ1+2 was a God send (now it's possible to "catch 'em all" on the items/weapons/armor so to speak). As for the starting personality, I decided to go with the silly/clown/excitable for the Hero, as it's the best one overall for a male hero (the extra luck is sure to come in handy) and as for the starting seeds, I chose (like I did the NES version) to always use them on the lowest stat first.

I also like how in both these SNES remakes you no longer battle empty air (you DQ/DW vets know what I mean) though unlike the FF remakes, you don't get to choose to turn that feature on/off. I think I can live with that.

And yes I used the same team (Hero Estil, Soldier Denise, Cleric Jamiee, Wizard Tweetie) as the NES version.

PS: In the SNES version you store extra items/weapons/armor in your bag rather than the vault right?  As this time the vault only deals with your gold/money.
