Very odd Super Street Fighter SNES, What is it?

My friend has a game store and he's good friends with the manager of a gamestop by us and he was invited to come to the street fighter IV tourny to set up some old consoles to play older street fighters.  So i took my snes kiosk for him and the only copy of super street fighter II we had was one he had traded in. No label.  We popped it in.  Half of the words are in Japanese and 3 characters names are swapped.
Vega is Balrog, Balrog is M. Bison, and M. Bison is Vega.  Anyone have any idea whats up with it?  I opened it up and everything looks normal to me.

  • Do you have a picture of the board ?
  • Everything looks normal? Nintendo on the PCB? EPROMs/lack thereof? It sounds kinda like a pirate to me...
  • ill take pics shortly, my camera batteries are charging
  • I've actually heard of some type of Street Fighter where the names were all swapped... I wish I knew more info but I can't remember where I read about it.
  • I believe all Japanese Street Fighter 2 based games had swapped names...

I bought a Super Famicom SF2 when it was released and it had the same names as you described.

I remember hearing the names were changed for the US because they didn't want to get sued.. Boxer named M. Bison...  But I don't know if that's true or not..
  • My copy of Super SF2 is like this, I always thought it odd but figured all US SSFII were like this. Mine's definitely a -USA.

The names were, in Japan, originally as they appear in this version game. You'll note the striking resemblance between M.Bison (Mike Bison) and a real champ boxer who had a NES game previously.
  • That's interesting. I always thought M.Bison was an odd choice for the main bad guy's name.
  • pics of the board?
